datenhorst··on Data Science: Reality Doesn't Meet Expectations
> The worst cases I have seen is when executives take a problem and ask data scientists to "do some of that data science" on the problem, looking for trends, patterns, automating workflows, making recommendations, etc.

While I agree on the point, there's a case that's arguably worse: When those executives hire Data Scientists and then ask them: "So what can we do with Data Science?"

datenhorst··on Kernighan's Law: You are not smart enough to debug it
> Effectively I always asked them what they think the code "should" do and what the results should be.

Is it also data-collection free?

I believe Harvard Business School and its ilk deserve a lot of blame for the instilling of a profit-at-any-cost culture across the US.
datenhorst··on Secretive energy startup backed by Bill Gates achieves solar breakthrough
This article reads like metric ton of BS but sadly I don't understand enough about the substance to be able to tell reliably.

1) I thought the reason cement production is bad for the environment because CO2 is released from the calcium during the process, not because fossil fuels are using for the heating of the oven.

2) So they're solving the problem by pointing the mirrors directly at the oven or how does that work? I don't really get why the temperature generated is important otherwise.

3) There's also storage of the energy batteries mentioned, how exactly does that work? Sounds like a contradiction to 2)

Examples that I've seen with GDPR requests are:

* Scan of ID

* WebID - video call where they take screenshots of ID and your face

* Cookie - kind of makes sense since 3rd party web trackers Quantcast rely on cookies to identify

datenhorst··on Disney Bans Netflix Ads as Streaming’s Marketing Wars Intensify
Just rotate through the 10 different $10/m streaming services
datenhorst··on Europeans have a 'right to be forgotten' online. Should Canadians?
Come on now, if you "remembered" anyway, surely you'd have nothing against the information being removed from an index?

This is more about the right not to have everything you ever did tattooed on your forehead.

datenhorst··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
Some years ago I read a book about a banker who took a summer off to work an Alpine pasture (ie. a summer farm) without electricity and company. Just him and 50 cows. I've been dreaming about that ever since.
datenhorst··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
Wouldn't you have to whitelist multiple domains (30+ for theguardian.co.uk) for a feature like "reload without blocking"?
datenhorst··on Adblock Radio: An adblocker for live radio streams and podcasts
Yeah I listen to a somewhat niche podcast from the UK, and recently I've been getting ads in my native German in it.
datenhorst··on Oh shit, my weekend project turned into an App Store Best New App (2018)

datenhorst··on We, the peoples of the Amazon, are full of fear. Soon you will be too
> (Vienna, Austria) - a country that has long since decided to upgrade the standard of living of its people through smart economic policies designed to reduce dependence on petroleum.

As someone from a bordering country, that is a surprising statement. Could you expand on that point a bit?

datenhorst··on Hundreds of people died over a millennium at “Skeleton Lake” in the Himalayas
In the wikipedia article it actually says that there is a theory that his body was placed on a nearby burial mound and moved by the ice to the location were he was found but:

> While archaeobotanist Klaus Oeggl of the University of Innsbruck agrees that the natural process described probably caused the body to move from the ridge that includes the stone formation, he pointed out that the paper provided no compelling evidence to demonstrate that the scattered stones constituted a burial platform

datenhorst··on Tourism Is Overwhelming the World's Top Destinations
I can only speak of Salzburg but at least there the issue that the city faces is the opposite, namely that a huge % of visitors are just in town for a couple of hours congesting the city while not consuming anything.
datenhorst··on Tourism Is Overwhelming the World's Top Destinations
> Taking a picture, of you, or just an `identical` is not why people travel.

As some who just had the dubious pleasure of sharing a vacation with his 19yo cousin, I can tell you that for her it was exactly like that.

datenhorst··on Tourism Is Overwhelming the World's Top Destinations
> I predict that long, slow, possibly "eco" trips

Anecdata but I can see this already happening in my circle of Friends in a big German city. Friends telling of weekend trips by plane are increasingly met by snarkiness, and I personally dream of doing the Interrail trip I never did in my teens!

datenhorst··on Tourism Is Overwhelming the World's Top Destinations
The countryside in Italy doesn't necessarily mean you're away from tourists, see the Dutch on Lago di Garda or the Germans in South Tyrol.
datenhorst··on Sick of cookie banners and popups? They’re all changing, again
> But I can't see this changing in the medium term without some high-profile fines

I'm counting on the German cease-and-desist industry to kick-start that - now that I think about it, I'm actually surprised it has happened yet.

Pretty much, yeah.

There's a good range to choose from as well these days: https://geizhals.eu/?cat=monplas

datenhorst··on The CIA Spied on People Through Their Smart TVs, Leaked Documents Reveal (2017)
In Europe, people have started purchasing so-called public displays instead of Smart TVs and just hook up a Chromecast/Pi/Fire TV Stick to it. This is especially common in countries where one can avoid public broadcasting fees by doing so.
datenhorst··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
The thing is, those don't have DVB-T receiver, which some people out there still require to watch cable TV.

datenhorst··on Facebook’s New Cryptocurrency Gets Big Backers
The white paper will be published next week, then we'll know more.
datenhorst··on I left the ad industry because of data tracking
As a citizen of the EU, I really want to find out what the advertising industry has on me. I once filed a GDPR Art. 5 request with Quantcast but forgot about it - they give you a link to S3 with a promise that there will be a ZIP containing data within 30 days.

What other hidden players are out there? I know next to nothing about the ad industry

datenhorst··on Show HN: Volument – A new take on website analytics
I actually like that their approach isn't like your typical SaaS website's where there's only buzzwordy elevator pitches and it's impossible to find out what the product is actually about.

Here I take 5 mins, read through "The problem" and "The solution" pages and feel treated like an adult.

datenhorst··on Facebook Asking for Some New Users' Email Passwords
Wait, what? I use Klarna quite regularily and I assumed they were redirecting to my bank's website (in an iframe) where I would enter my credentials. I mean, the web form is even branded with my bank's logo and color scheme. If it's really the case that I was just giving my credentials to Klarna who then logged into my bank account on my behalf, I have been phished, there's no sugar coating this.
