datakan··on Meta reaches $16.68B settlement over social media harms to children
Who gets the money?
datakan··on Debian polls its developers on AI: permit or ban?
Poster wants a "total ban", you can only deduce that means vulnerability management also.
datakan··on I miss the old Claude Code
Seems the site is down
datakan··on Python's pre-declared constants are kinda weird
It is 30+ years old with all the baggage you would expect. It’s very much a product of its time.
datakan··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Intel entered the memory space because they partnered with Micron. They left the memory space when Micron pulled out of the partnership.
datakan··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
People keep saying stuff like this without understanding what it takes to make RAM. It's one of, if not the most, heavily patented things in the world. The second you dip your toes into those waters the lawsuits begin.

If somehow you get around the patent issues, you're now faced with huge research and development costs, fabs to build, processes to sort out and all of that has very high failure rates.

Last time I checked Micron was the largest patent holder in the world and even for them this is a hard area where they are number 3 in the market.

Token prices coming down means nothing if the models keep wasting them
datakan··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Don't give them any ideas
datakan··on How much of HN is AI?
I never cared much for newsgroups, they were mostly nice for the historical stuff. I do miss IRC though, as toxic as it could be. I could run it in a little terminal on any system without download electron apps and being spammed with ads (discord).
datakan··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Cyberpunk isn't old to macOS, they just released the native version a few months ago.

Apple is already leasing phones/computers..........
datakan··on OpenAI restores 5-hour Codex and Work limits for ChatGPT Plus users
The most transformative technology ever created! Brought to you in 5 hour increments..... maybe
datakan··on OpenAI restores 5-hour Codex and Work limits for ChatGPT Plus users
I left Claude because of this. I guess now I need to move on from OpenAI also
datakan··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra for a big leap in performance and AI compute
I love linux and would be using it if the ARM support was better. It's just not there and most distros that support ARM do it a little poorly. I just haven't seen anything even remotely comparable to Apple Silicon and unfortunately Linux is struggling very hard to support it.
datakan··on Fast and Hard Code
I'm not clear why someone would roll their own crypto. There are so many good solutions out there that are free that it seems pointless.

I keep hearing about post-quantum being an issue though.

datakan··on MartyPC is a cross-platform emulator of early PCs written in Rust
I don't think Backspace as a key was standard internationally until 1994. Apple still doesn't use it, just Delete.
datakan··on A week of using Codex more than Claude
Absolutely no point arguing with these people. They are so ideologically captured that it's pointless trying to discuss anything with them. Just move on. Everything and everyone they disagree with is "nazi" and if you say anything contrary to that you're a "nazi" also.
datakan··on LLMs are proof that Unix won
> In that sense, LLMs are embodying the Unix philosophy. Of course, this analogy has holes so big you can easily ride a horse through. LLMs are neither small nor do they do one thing—you could even argue that some of the things they do, they certainly do not do well.

So the title is just clickbait

datakan··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
Has Anthropic said anything about how or why Claude writes the way it does? So many people hate it, seems like they need to do some damage control there.

I haven't had the same problems others have but I'm also not a heavy user of it.

datakan··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
I wish they put more effort into Kagi news. Feels very barebones but has a lot of potential.
datakan··on I'm becoming AI-blind
> but people who spend all day doing jobs that don't involve computers aren't as good

I think they may just be to trusting and/or naive. People in tech right now are hyper aware of this and are actively looking while people outside of that bubble barely give it a second thought.

datakan··on Micron announces $10B research hub in Boise
Yep, the "Micron Mile" where you can walk a full mile one end to the other and back, without going outside. Very nice in the winter for stretching your legs on the lunch break. The new clean rooms they have are amazing.
datakan··on Micron announces $10B research hub in Boise
They were founded in Boise. Boise is their HQ and where most of their developer and research staff live. I worked there for almost 9 years. They have several fabs here, all on the same plot of land just outside of town. This will add to it.
datakan··on Micron announces $10B research hub in Boise
They are literally building a fab right next to it as we speak.
datakan··on One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime
>that could have been reviewed by lower level officers for a fraction of the cost.

Did you read it? They are understaffed by hundreds of officers. What lower level officers are going to do it when it's all hands on deck to keep the ship afloat?

datakan··on One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime
Literally from the article if you had read it:

"“At this staffing level, more officers will be forced to work excessive overtime, which in turn will accelerate attrition,” Nguyen said in a statement. “We cannot meet the needs of our community without forcing officers into more shifts.”

It is true that OPD is severely understaffed by hundreds of officers. Mayor Barbara Lee is attempting to shrink the staffing gap, with plans to increase the number of officers. "

datakan··on One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime
The department is understaffed by hundreds of officers forcing them to work double shifts in a lot of cases at time-and-a-half pay. This is a very dangerous situation for the city to be in as that drives more officers to quit and with the financial impact already sustained will force future cuts creating a downward spiral that will be felt in the crime stats.
datakan··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
No
datakan··on GPT-5.6 Sol Pricing Cut by 50%
Can't change your email address with Claude either. You have to delete your whole account and create a new one. Absolute shit software and they expect us to believe these things are super powerful world changing things.
datakan··on Un-AI Your Internet
Articles like this are interesting. Its like all those "De-Google yourself" articles from 10 years ago, or the articles touting privacy focused options to SV companies. Yet the world keeps using the boogeyman option.

Microsoft, Google, Apple, Amazon, Meta etc etc. They just keep growing despite how people feel about them. I think the world has a tech addiction and it will take something pretty substantial to change that.
