datakan··on Apple Mac mini review
The price hikes drove me back to windows. If I'm paying those prices I may as well be able to play games with my kid again. I see no advantage to using Apple right now outside of the iPhone.
datakan··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
This sounds awful. AI Chatbots will be everywhere Shopify is. I just see a lot of popups in our future with fake names and faces pretending to be people asking us how they can help us.
datakan··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
The oldest supported kernel is 5.10 and that loses support in December. That's wild they are using a 3.X kernel
datakan··on A single firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta hacking scandals
“There’s no such thing as bad press”
datakan··on LLMs are real, AI is fake
It was "garbage in, garbage out". That's the only conclusion I've been able to draw from all the propaganda around it.
datakan··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
Everyone that will now pick sides. Just wait, I’m already seeing it on Reddit.
datakan··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
This time, until they dont anymore. The next stage is people attacking the mathematicians and accusing them. The OpenAI fans come out to attack, then the masses will pick sides and it all just becomes a mess
datakan··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
Everyones outraged all the time. It doesn't mean anything anymore. It's that meme from years ago about the red ants and the black ants living in a box peacefully until someone shakes the box and they start trying to kill each other. They go after each other and not the one shaking the box.

OpenAI/Anthropic are shaking the box.

datakan··on Feeling Sad about AI
That's kinda what I feel like telling him. He has a lot of passion and he's a very smart kid. I don't want to crush that, I want to nurture it. I think being real about things is important though and he has a lot of years still to ultimately decide.
datakan··on Feeling Sad about AI
I got him a ChatGPT account with parental controls on it. I'm just hoping he uses it as a tool and not a crutch.
datakan··on Feeling Sad about AI
You may be right, I really don't know. I can't control the ocean, all I can do is learn to surf. I use the tools, bring home the check and go about my life. I just feel terrible for the people following after me who wont get to experience what I did. Maybe it's for the best, maybe not. Time will ultimately tell I suppose.
datakan··on Feeling Sad about AI
My son told me yesterday he wants to program video games for a living. He's 13. He's looking at how it used to be done and seeing the pride people had in doing it. He hasn't seen how it is now.

Not sure I have the heart to tell him how terrible the industry has become. Feels like telling a kid 30 years ago that being an astronaut is pointless because they no longer go to the moon.

datakan··on Show HN: Hacker News, without AI
I'm mixed on that. Definitely topics I hide when I think people can't discuss them like adults, but sometimes even bad stories have some great discussions in them.
datakan··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
Had a President make a big ordeal about leaving "for health reasons". His LinkedIn had him at a new company within a couple months doing the same thing.

Had a CISO leave for "personal" reasons. Talked to him a couple years later and yeah, he was fired.

Steal 20$ out of a cash register and make the local news. Waste a billion dollars at a corp and make insane decisions and ride out on a golden parachute. Its a fucked up world.

datakan··on Apple Watch Series 12
No one that does this with any regularity or seriousness uses an Apple Watch, they go with Garmin or one of the real fitness watches that can claim battery life in weeks and even months. My Fenix 8 charges once every 26-29 days. I left Apple Watch and never looked back. It's just an inferior product in every possible way.
datakan··on Defining AI Psychosis. Part 2: "Prolific AI Psychosis"
> Psychosis as a diagnosis is a serious condition. there's an implication that there's 'harm'

I just watched a company fire an entire department of people under the sincere belief a chatbot run by a middle manager could save them 10 million a year. This failed miserably and they now need to hire or re-hire people.

There is a tremendous amount of harm happening. Psychosis is a perfect term for what is happening.

datakan··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Presumably. The headless CLI part of libreoffice is even included in Codex and Claude Code.
datakan··on VMware migration reduces Tottenham Hotspur's licensing fees by 85 percent
I didn't realize how addicted some orgs were to VMWare until Broadcom bought them and I witnessed zero people migrate to alternatives. It's been one of the single biggest shocks to me in my career. Watching them get squeezed openly and ruthlessly and just accepting it. I've only ever seen Microsoft pull that off before.
datakan··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Unfortunately yes.
datakan··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
The broken, terrible English on that website does not inspire confidence of any kind.
datakan··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Can't watch football on a flock camera
datakan··on Two German airport workers die of malaria after 'mosquito arrives on plane'
You thought wrong
datakan··on Peter Cullen, Voice of Optimus Prime in 'Transformers,' Dies at 85
I hope they retire Optimus Prime the way Baseball teams retire players numbers. Peter Cullen is an act that can't be followed and any attempt to do so will sully the memory.
datakan··on FDA approves first in class targeted therapy for metastatic pancreatic cancer
My dad passed in 2020 from pancreatic cancer. He'd been to the doctor several times complaining about issues and all they would do is send him home with laxatives. Eventually it got bad enough my mom ran him to the ER when they found the cancer which had progressed into its final stages already. He was dead less than a month later.

Similar story with a guy I worked with. He went home sick one day. A few days later our boss told us he was sick and had pancreatic cancer. He came into the office to say goodbye to us a few weeks later and then died about 10 days after that.

Fuck cancer

datakan··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
“After we started thinking for you it became our society” The Matrix 1999
datakan··on Tim Curry has died
Hayden Panettiere was first I guess
datakan··on AI Is a Harsh Mistress
He's definitely up there with Asimov and others.
datakan··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
Punishable by fine just means its legal for a price. Its disgusting
datakan··on AI Is a Harsh Mistress
Have you read Ian Banks Culture series? It's kind of a best case scenario of AI in the far future.
datakan··on LibreOffice 26.8 Released with Many Nice Improvements
I've always tried to like Libreoffice but I'm leaning more towards Only Office these days. Libreoffice just feels stuck in the past and their recent feuds with other office suites is drama I just don't want anything to do with.
