dastx··on EBPFSnitch: An eBPF based Linux Application Firewall
I've used `alias shit='docker run --rm -it --entrypoint /bin/sh -v $PWD:/workdir -w /workdir'` for a long time. This way, whenever I need, I can just run `shit alpine` or `shit ubuntu` or whatever.
dastx··on Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely
What makes you say exchanges rule Bitcoin's world? If exchanges are the equivalent of banks, miners are the equivalent of governments. So if anyone "rules" "the" Bitcoin's world, then it would be miners. Not exchanges.
dastx··on Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely
You're clearly misunderstanding what bitcoin is about. No trust is put into crypto exchanges. Trust is put into cryptography, which miners help with. This kind of puts the trust in miners, but in order to do anything as a miner, you'd need to either break sha256, or you'd need 51% of the computing power. The latter is more likely, but it would make bitcoin useless because people will lose trust in the system, thus anything you'd do with the money you'd steal/double spend would be worthless.

On the other hand, individuals can still put their trust in crypto exchanges, but unlike the old system, you are not required to put your trust in an exchange.

dastx··on Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely
Sure, but not everyone can foresee everything. Email was meant to be a decentralised, self-hosted service, yet here we are, gmail, outlook have the majority of users.

In addition to that, most of those megaminers, and megapools, can't do much without working with a large chunk of other miners. Without it, the worse they can do is not fulfill individual transactions (which other miners can continue to accept).

Just because a minority is hoarding bitcoin, does not make bitcoin's core issue invalid, that is, don't trust financial institutions or governments.

Bitcoin never claimed to solve the issues that are at the core of monetary systems (greed, corruption etc). It solves the issue of trust. I don't have to trust a financial institutions or government to tell me how much money I own. Nor is there a government or bank that can freeze my account because I've been naughty (or, in certain cases, because the government deems you naughty because of $ideology). That's what bitcoin solves. Not the issues that are core to monetary systems. Issues that mostly come from human psyche.

dastx··on Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely
Bitcoin isn't claiming that it takes corruption out of the human psyche. Corrupt people stay corrupt. All bitcoin does is take unfounded trust away from individual organisations and governments, and instead puts that trust in maths and the collective. It never claimed that it will combat corruption, and likely never will.

NFTs are definitely switching me off from cryptocurrencies as I find the use of it ridiculous. Sure there are _some_ genuine use cases, but so far it's just been terrible, and does not fill me with confidence. Time will tell if NFTs are gonna become anything that's not silliness among the rich.

dastx··on Vitalik escalates ETH 2.0 merge as miners plan a 51% attack
I suppose the issue in this scenario isn't necessarily energy, but that it's miners are at odds with Ethereum devs to the point where they're willing to attack the network itself. Either way, I'm all for PoS because of the reduced energy consumption, and if it puts a middle finger in the face of the miners, who are partially to blame for shortages of consoles and GPUs, then I'm even more for it.
dastx··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
You can still view your vault, you just can't edit/save stuff.
dastx··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
Looks really good. This seems like it would be a great alternative to AirDrop if support is added to enough platforms. One issue I have with it is, if it's p2p having a speed limit seems silly.

Note: I'm obviously thinking from a user perspective, I'm sure others, especially non-technical people might find this reasonable. From a business perspective I suppose it does make sense.

dastx··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
I understand what you mean, though, to me, it read more along the lines of "you already trust Bitwarden, now you can use it to also send stuff" or something like that. Could be just be.
dastx··on Why Become a TypeScript Fan?
Typescript is getting more and more popular. I wonder if there is leeway to have this introduced into browsers to be run directly. I can see Microsoft doing it with edge, and possibly provide an upstream patch to chromium.

This might be unpopular opinion, but personally I'd love for JavaScript to be completely replaced with TS or something like it.

Curious what you mean with "you won't get fired for picking this". Do you mean that it's good and easy to run, or something else?

dastx··on Debian Running on Rust Coreutils
I'd love to know too. It seems like it's nearly at feature parity but if performance is an issue, it's not really a replacement.
dastx··on Nordigen: Free banking data and premium insights
Firefly III [0] solves this by making the user responsible for this. They expect you give it the necessary details (api keys etc) for Spectre, which it then uses to download transactions. Could you not do something similar? Write a small guide for users on where to register and what to do, and give them config options to put in the necessary API Keys, and then use that to download the transactional data?

dastx··on Nordigen: Free banking data and premium insights
Since you're Europe based, this was implied. As mentioned by a sibling comment, this doesn't mean you don't sell data. Your vague reply seems to imply that you do end up selling this data. I guess this kind of makes sense, considering selling the data probably makes you a lot more money than the €0.50 per month.
dastx··on AdGuard publishes a list of 6K+ trackers abusing the CNAME cloaking technique
It wouldn't be DNS blocking. The feature request on the project is about adding an HTTPS MITM Proxy that would then do the cosmetic filters among other things.

AGH already supports adding AdGuard filters, but for obvious reasons it only applies domain based filters. Adding the MITM proxy would allow for processing of the cosmetic filters too.

dastx··on Nordigen: Free banking data and premium insights
Your privacy policy seem quite vague. Do you sell transactional data? Anonymised or not? I've been looking for an alternative to Yodlee, but they all seem to be selling the scraped data in the background.
dastx··on Nordigen: Free banking data and premium insights
Except in reality there is no standardisation, and everyone's API is different. Making it that much harder to actually integrate. Still, having _an_ API is way better than no API.
dastx··on Reflections on IDEA vs VS Code
The Rust plugin for IDEA Ultimate allows for debugging. I've used it while trying to contribute to open source software.
dastx··on AdGuard publishes a list of 6K+ trackers abusing the CNAME cloaking technique
This is a feature that has been requested, but isn't implemented yet. Suggest you give it a thumbs up on github as they implement things in order of highest number of thumbs.
dastx··on AdGuard publishes a list of 6K+ trackers abusing the CNAME cloaking technique
Totally! I used to use pi-hole, and I genuinely much prefer AGH.
dastx··on Flutter 2
Honest question, what's Google's angle with flutter? It's one thing to be develop a toolkit for platforms they have a vested interest in, it's an entirely different thing to create such a toolkit for all platforms, including their competition.

In that same thread someone mentioned OpenFisca [0], which is used to codify tax law. Have you considering utilising it instead of re-inventing the wheel?

Feels like this should be in the public domain. Any reason for it not to be?
dastx··on Total Cookie Protection
Providing this is the reason Atlassian uses the referrer, then this seems reasonable usage. Thanks for clarifying!
dastx··on LastPass Android app has got 7 trackers in it
Personally I'd much rather use Bitwarden due to their fully open source nature, and possibility to self host if they ever go down the wrong path.

In addition, there are open source alternatives that have all the features you mentioned (namely the Keepass/Keeweb family).

dastx··on How often should I rotate my SSH keys?
Sure, inventory is unaccounted for but you as an engineer knows it's not accounted for. So you go to IT, and you ask for a new one. IT revokes access of the original key, and gives you a new one.

No one in that transaction cares if it was lost or stolen.

dastx··on Show HN: QEMU front end for M1 and Intel Macs
The underlying tech is QEMU, so probably equivalent or better.
dastx··on Total Cookie Protection
Weirdly for me Atlassian doesn't work when I have the spoof referrer enabled in about:config. Like why does referrer, a property that is a header, define whether my login is valid or not?
dastx··on Cockpit – Integrated, glanceable, web-based interface for servers
But it's not as simple as that though is it? Does this take into account things like HA? Or offsite backups? What about security? I guess this works for someone who sets this up on a single server, perhaps just for themselves. But running services is a lot more complex that just isn't possible as a 1 click install.

Double check that your DNS settings is correct. I'm on BT and it's working fine for me. I've previously used it on VM fine too.
