dasKrokodil··on US Forces Exit Iraq
Mission Accomplished!
dasKrokodil··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
> At least with cigarettes the smoke is such an intense irritant you self-regulate pretty quickly compared to a cupcake flavoured vape you can just suck on all day long.

In my experience: no, you don't. You just arrange your life around the fact that you need to smoke all the time.

dasKrokodil··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
A while back I saw this on reddit... in case you don't want to click the link, it's a picture of a cigarette with the caption "This plant-based alternative promises to help high schoolers stop vaping".

I would have never thought that people would be stupid enough to try this for real, but here we are...

dasKrokodil··on Volkswagen Just Built an EV That Can Go Nearly 900 Miles on a Charge
Yes, it's a prototype. But it's from a company that has built countless production cars, and which also produced a road-legal limited production run of a pretty similar car (just with ICE instead of electric): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_1-litre_car

I'm pretty sure they could bring this to market almost immediately, if there was a sizeable market for this kind of vehicle.

Aptera on the other hand has been around for a long time now, changing their product strategy every now and then, making announcements... I wish them all the best, I really do, but until they actually ship something, I will also stay skeptical.

dasKrokodil··on Volkswagen Just Built an EV That Can Go Nearly 900 Miles on a Charge
Aptera is even more vaporware-y than this though.
dasKrokodil··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
For me personally, the only valid use case for a foldable phone would be Nintendo DS/3DS emulation. Other than that.... meh, they suck.
dasKrokodil··on The New Berlin Wall
> "Technologically, we are rapidly moving into an age where it is feasible to colonise the solar system, but there are those who would try to wall us into this planet using legal and political means."

Is it really feasible though? I'm not up to speed with the state of the art, but in my limited understanding, we are still pretty far away from being able to colonise our solar system. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

dasKrokodil··on Warm up your MacBook (2019)
Speaking of cold weather and warming up computers... I've had my fair share of long bicycle commutes during cold winters and I always wondered whether booting up the laptop right after arriving has any effect on the long-term reliability? Like, are there any components which suffer from being activated when they're really cold?
dasKrokodil··on The Steinwinter Supercargo
Sure, visibility would be worse than on a normal truck, but no worse than a low sportscar (which is also road legal and no problem to drive). I don't think it would have been much of an issue.
dasKrokodil··on UnDUNE II
This is very cool! And very impressive that it was made to work on PICO-8.

A small nitpick: I'm pretty sure the sand worms wouldn't eat foot soldiers in the original, only vehicles.

dasKrokodil··on First tunnel element of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel immersed
> With this tunnel done, I believe Copenhagen to Hamburg will be less than three hours.

Even when the tunnel will finally be done, Deutsche Bahn will find creative ways to make it take five hours again.

dasKrokodil··on Scientists warn Atlantic current at risk of shutting down
Great, I live in coastal northern Europe, so the question will be whether I'll freeze to death from AMOC shutting down, or drown from the rising sea levels. Maybe I should move to Switzerland or something.
dasKrokodil··on The Joy of Folding Bikes
If you're into folding bikes and recumbents, check out the prototype for the folding Baron:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTsTKdqVTY8

It's a shame that it never went into production, but I guess at that time Optima already saw the writing on the wall that two-wheel recumbents wouldn't be profitable for much longer.

dasKrokodil··on Iran claims US exploited networking equipment backdoors during strikes
Not for a BMW though.
dasKrokodil··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
It's mildly interesting, but ultimately it's just a little greenwashing project. They even painted it green to make that clear :)
dasKrokodil··on MacBook Neo
Funny; for me, a backlit keyboard is one of the most unnecessary features I can think of. Even for those who can't touch type, the keyboard is just inches away from the bright screen which sort of illuminates them.
dasKrokodil··on Gamedate – A site to revive dead multiplayer games
Yeah, not to mention that you even needed to connect to their servers to play the fucking single player campaign. I hated that so much, and then it more or less became the standard for many AAA single player games to come...
dasKrokodil··on Bitcoin tumbles below $70k, wiping out gains since Trump 2024 win
Interesting... so, what is the most straight-forward and least shady way of investing in it?
dasKrokodil··on Home Office Is Sabotaging You
> This is so obviously written by an LLM I can’t get past the first paragraph. When will this end?

I'm not disagreeing, as you might very well be right, but... why exactly do you think this is written by LLM? I couldn't find any obvious giveaways myself.

dasKrokodil··on Why Is Greenland Part of the Kingdom of Denmark? A Short History
> the land belongs to the one with the bigger guns, and a willingness to use it

Not necessarily. USA certainly had bigger guns in Vietnam and Afghanistan, and yet they eventually had to retreat from both.

dasKrokodil··on All known 49-year-old Apple-1 computers
I previously asked about how hard it would be to create a forgery and got a nice answer here:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29173562#29175946

TLDR: it would be very hard, perhaps next to impossible to create one, and then you'd still have the issue how to convince people it's real, given that the existing ones are pretty well documented and accounted for.

dasKrokodil··on No escape, no control: A 'Severance' keyboard is coming soon
If anyone wants to have this style but in an actually usable keyboard, you can buy (at great expense) these keycaps and put them on whatever cherry-mx-compatible keyboard you like:

dasKrokodil··on Tesla's sales plummet across Europe
Here in Germany, the somewhat paradox situation is that the right-wing party AfD has been pro-diesel and anti-ev for a long time, while it's usually the more progressive and/or left-leaning people who have been buying EVs.

But now that Musk has done something which looked very much like a Nazi salute on stage and also meddled in German politics by endorsing the AfD, nobody on the left wants to be seen in a Tesla anymore, while the right-wingers still prefer German diesel cars.

dasKrokodil··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
The new one is rumored to feature hall-effect sticks on the Joycons which would hopefully solve that issue.
dasKrokodil··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
Yeah, and this might make first-person shooters and some strategy games play a lot nicer if (big if) it works well. Perhaps the next iteration of Mario Maker might also make use of it.
dasKrokodil··on ZType – Typing Game
I would like it if there was a hard mode, where every wrong keypress would spawn another enemy.
dasKrokodil··on House designed on Passive House principles survives Cali wildfire
Perhaps this should be kept in mind while rebuilding all those houses that were lost?
dasKrokodil··on Addictive nut is driving record rates of cancer
I wonder whether the active ingredient in the betel nuts is the same substance that also causes the cancer? Because if not, maybe the problem could be solved by extracting or sythesizing the active ingredient.
dasKrokodil··on A pretty visualisation of the European power grid (2022)
Let's see... nuclear power is super expensive, relies on finite uranium resources and there is no safe solution to store the waste. Do we really want to rely on this?
dasKrokodil··on Lunatic Fringe is a game originally distributed as an AfterDark screensaver
I love that they want to recreate it, as I spent quite some time with the original when I was younger.

However, right now it doesn't seem to run that well. I'm getting estimated framerates of around 5 fps on a M3 Macbook Pro, making it essentially unplayable.

I don't see any other comments about the performance - am I the only one?
