daok··on Show HN: HN.watch – Videos of all Hacker News posts
I like it! I bookmarked it. But I wouldn't pay for it.
daok··on Syria flooded with Pepsi and Pringles as rulers open economy
These links should be in the main post. Could maybe automatically added. I didn't know about it and the person who posted the comment also did not and so many more... saying "it's been discussed for years" does not bring anything else than showing that you have some knowledge that some does not have...
daok··on Software Engineer Pay Heatmap Across the US
I'm over 15 years of experience, lost my job, and finding a job at 200k+ took months (Bay Area). I'm lucky and found something, but the market is totally different than it was 3-5 years ago. There is a lot of competition, and there are not a lot of open positions.
daok··on What I Learned Working for Mark Zuckerberg
>At AppSumo, we run paid trials with potential teammates before bringing them on full-time to ensure they’re the right fit.

Not sure that is something I would personally enjoy. While I understand you must fit in, having this process highlights that leaving your current company is even riskier as you might not make the cut and end up with nothing. The trial is one-sided, with all the risks for the new employee, not AppSumo. I understand that any change of job is similar where you may stay forever, however, saying that way make it worse somehow.

daok··on Show HN: Double – Design and invest in your own stock index
FYI, on Chrome (Windows machine) your home page is missing the vertical scroll bar.
daok··on Code Llama, a state-of-the-art large language model for coding
You probably do not have a child of 7 years old because they do not know at that age what is a prime number.

Second, basic math still that you never or rarely use or with very large time between usage might get rusty. You may understand the concept but not find the optimal solution. The way you are responding here shows quite a lot about how you are short sighted by instant-failing someone with a single question instead of trying to asses the whole person as much as you can. On you side, you are wasting opportunity to have a great person that could be a key player in your team by bringing other set of skill on the table.

daok··on When Work Didn’t Follow You Home
Many places is not. They hang the carrot of bonus, stocks and promotion...
daok··on Early Remote Work Impacts on Family Formation
Kids are way more disruptive than open space. Depending of the age they are dependent for simple thing like getting a cup of water. Then the list grow fast to get snack or to go to the bathroom. Then it continues by being bored after 10 minutes. I would say that any kid under 10 years old require some supervision. Of course, some children are more independent and trustworthy. However, 8 hours of work with a child or 8 hours in an open space is very different for most parent.
daok··on Apollo Layoffs
Apollo is literally build on top of REST. It adds types and clarify the dependencies between the types. It enhances an existing protocol by adding features.

It is not a silver bullets but it has advantages like self-documenting (Playground), ease of discovery on big API (generated documentation with types) and can have TypeScript type generated for your (reduce the number of interfaces/types to maintain).

Federation is also a good concept if you have many teams that need to converge into a cohesive API gateway.

Overall, if you use it properly it can be a great tool.

daok··on 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Near San Jose, CA
South-East San Jose and I felt it. Received a notification on my Pixel phone as the house was shaking. Nothing broken, but for the 5-6 seconds it lasted I had the reflect to hold my monitors (on arms) because they were shaking.
daok··on New (LTE) Rotary Cell Phone [video]
I'm a developer, did small Arduino project but always found it too overwhelming to create a custom board. What do you recommend to get started? I'm impressed by the custom board of this phone!
daok··on Meta slashes hiring plans, girds for 'fierce' headwinds
Yes, good people that know they can find something else will leave first. Those who stay are mostly very comfortable and well positioned that they know they far in the queue of layoff or those that know they cannot find something similarly well paid.
daok··on CSS: Absolutely positioning things relatively
when managers pressure the developer to ship fast and move to the next thing
daok··on Software Engineering at Google (2020) [pdf]
>let people choose teammates until they find ones that fit.

Good way to get a very echo room of single way of thinking with strong bias. But I agree that it is way faster without the friction of different point of views.

daok··on Why I don't miss React: a story about using the platform
The rendering part resonate with me. I've tried in some side projects SolidJS framework and I really enjoy that the rendering of each component occurs once! Easier to not fall into some traps that React has.
daok··on Git.io deprecation: Active links to be maintained in a read-only state
Exactly, it is not daunting and way easier than 20 years ago. We went a long way to improve the process.
daok··on We need someone who has done “it” before
Why is that dumb if they gave you exactly what they want? Regardless of their motive, that is what they want and hire you to do. I do not clearly see your point here.
daok··on Principles of Engineering Management
I don't think 1-1 is the right time. If you have a team of 15 people, you would need to repeat the same thing 15 times. Better to give an update of what you are working on (as a manager) for the whole team once.
daok··on Tabler Icons – Free vector icons for web design
My favorite icon NPM package contains 14k icons: https://solid-icons-web.vercel.app/
daok··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
I like that in Windows I can copy-paste the location from one File Manager windows to another one. Something that you cannot do in MacOs File Manager
daok··on Changing jobs during the Great Resignation
The article says that he already spend about 1h to 1h30 for lifting (gym). Probably needed to ask to get even more time just to be polite. Always a balance when you live with someone and that you have children.
daok··on RFC: Intent to Ship React 18
IMP SolidJS fixes a lot of issue React as without leave the "React-ish" way to build components.
daok··on Hooks Considered Harmful
I've been using SolidJS for some personal project and they use most of React concept but avoid pitfalls by running once the code of each component. Also, no need to explicit dependencies! The framework figures it out automatically. Really nice dev experience.
daok··on Twenty years of C# with Anders Hejlsberg [audio]
The lack of possibility to scroll in time (to skip that part) is what bothered me the most.
daok··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
What are you talking about? The Bay Area has one of the greatest weather of the world, lot of job opportunities, beaches near by as as mountain. Lot to like also.
daok··on The New York Times buys Wordle
Can someone explain me how come Wordle can be acquire since it is an implementation of another game called Lingo? Isn't there some copyright or other intellectual property belonging to someone else?
daok··on Show HN: Hibiki HTML – New frontend framework – no scaffolding, no Webpack
I think most of the problem with Webpack is that it gets complicated and no one is comfortable to touch it. With a little bit of rotation in a team and then most folks are not comfortable to touch. There are also man ways to configure and every project is so different that if you are touching Webpack only once a year that you never get totally expert with it. Hence, at the end, from my experience, people do not enjoy configuring Webpack.
daok··on HSLuv, a developer friendly perceptual color space (2020)
If you run Chrome Lighthouse you will get a list of all the color contrast issues.
daok··on Takeaways from looking for a new senior role in tech
You should a little negative but I read you twice and there is some truth in your message. I am actually working in one of the popular FANG company. I receive solicitations every day (3-10). I have no time to answer everyone. I have over 15 years of experience and the few times I decided to reply I realized two things. First, once you start giving a range of compensation the discussion stop rapidly for 90% of the recruiters. The market is "hot" but for folks that are not that senior (or with lower expectation that I have maybe). The second thing is that when it goes well and we start the process that everything is super slow motion. Positive feedbacks but every step take weeks to move on. At a point where I lost any excitement. Hence, I suppose my field is not such in demand... that engineers with less years of experience get these positions faster than me since I am strict about my expectation. I might have the wrong conclusion here but I found that this "hot market" is not "hot" for the whole range of expertises and years of experience.
