danw··on Review my startup: Tastebuds - dating for last.fm users
Is this based on a music hackday project?
danw··on How broadband pay-per-use will change web apps
One place where this is the case is when developing Kindle apps using the SDK. From https://kdk.amazon.com/:

"Active content applications that are smaller than 1MB and use less than 100KB/user/month of wireless data may be offered at no charge"

How apps are priced takes into account their data usage over their lifespan.

danw··on Verified by Visa and Mastercard SecureCode are broken and need to be fixed
I found this interesting because it provides helpful advice on how to handles 3DS as it currently is. It's a flawed system but it's not going away any time soon. In the meantime finding ways to make it suck less is all a merchant can do.
danw··on Flash Mob gone wrong
Original source: http://www.tomscott.com/mob/. From the guidelines: "Please submit the original source". That's not quite the same as embedding something in your own blog and then submitting your own blog.
danw··on We added conference coverage to Lanyrd.com, now collecting video/audio/slides/..
That's excellent. Is there any kind of auto-import feature? Eg load the event tag photos from flickr?
danw··on Arduino - "We are cooking something new for you."
Is this the same as the arduino with built in Ethernet or something different?[0] Or the tinker kit perhaps?[1]

danw··on Countdown to Knockout: Post 11 - Deploying to Joyent
I presume you mean "Heroku", who already do node.js http://blog.heroku.com/archives/2010/4/28/node_js_support_ex...
danw··on Hipmunk (YC S10) Embarks on Mission to Make Travel Search Easier
I find http://www.kayak.co.uk/ and http://www.skyscanner.net/ to be more useful
danw··on You’re a developer, so why do you work for someone else?
I have an excellent job where I get to work with lovely people and solve interesting problems. I'll leave the admin, business development & marketing to folks who are better skilled at such things for now, thank you very much.
danw··on Microsoft cancels the Courier, the Internet sheds a tear
Would make a nice iPad app, especially combined with a Pogo Stylus.
danw··on Docs.com (Microsoft Office 2010 Web Apps + Facebook integration)
I am looking forward to sharing excel documents with my friends, they are going to have so much fun reviewing my formulas and charts mapping out the quality of our friendship.
danw··on Unfiltered twitter streams are bad, mkay
This is fantastic. Any tweets with #cashgordon get posted on this smear site, including HTML and JavaScript. Right now this Conservative political site is redirecting to the Labour website or Lemon Party.
danw··on Project Manager's View vs. Developer's View
I am looking forward to EC3
danw··on Garmin Connect team asked to relocate - this is how they declined
If Garmin takes offense and issues a takedown then that's just more publicity.
danw··on The Largest Infrastructure Project in History: Chinese High-Speed Rail to Europe
Any mention of what the route would be? And what's the anticipated travel time from London to China?
danw··on What Is It About Restaurant Websites?
My hunch is many websites are made 1) with a small budget or 2) by a family member or friend who has a pirated copy of a WYSIWYG web dev app (usually flash).
danw··on Virgin America ditches Flash on its site
What's amazing is that this is a news story at all. "Websites uses open standards, like most other web sites".
danw··on YCRFS 6: iPad Applications
One particularly interesting subproblem is how to introduce iPads into big companies.

There's already an app for this, keynote. The iPad is perfect for sales presentations hooked up to a projector or by passing the tablet around. You can edit on the go and email the deck. It's easy to slip from presentation to app demo.

The only thing missing is easy wireless printing from the iPad or iPhone. Opportunity here?

danw··on Why passion is not what you need in a programmer
Surely passion can be the motivation for all that training and effort?
danw··on IPad Colocation
Nokia S60 has been able to run Apache with mod_python for a few years[1] and I've used a jailbroken iPod Touch running apache and php to demo web apps previously.

danw··on Microsoft RickRolls Wi-Fi leechers at TechEd
I've found that asking people to stop at large events doesn't usually make them stop. Tragedy of the commons style, people justify to themselves that one more person wont break the network.

Of course asking people to stop, explaining why stopping would fix the network problems and stating abusers will get kicked are the correct first step just to let people know what's going on.

danw··on Terry Pratchett has Alzheimer's, and is becoming an assisted suicide advocate.
Listen to his Richard Dimbleby Lecture to understand his viewpoint http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qmfgn. There are text versions and recordings floating around. Here's a shortened one: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/feb/02/terry-pratchet...
danw··on TPUTH — Socially Generated Newspaper for Geeks
It is Drudge Report for geeks http://www.drudgereport.com/
danw··on Data.gov.uk versus Data.gov – Which wins?
There were 4000 or so when I first saw it last night. Almost there.
danw··on Data.gov.uk versus Data.gov – Which wins?
Most of what data.gov.uk links to are pdf's, as http://dataformatchecker.heroku.com/ has been finding out. The data seems more appropriate for journalists than software developers.
danw··on Apple's Mistake
I know quite a few iPhone developers and they're finding approval speeds of 1-3 days since christmas. Not quite continuous deployment yet. I guess any approval process prevents that.
danw··on RWW Never Mind the Valley: Here's London
The wired version might be a bit more reliable currently http://www.flickr.com/photos/blech/4256983160/sizes/l/
danw··on [dead]
That is an useless link baiting headline. Recommend changing it. An honest "TechCrunch begins showing interstitial adverts" would probably evoke a more interesting debate.
