danw··on How sexist can a web developer job ad get?
You're an asshole! Oh, you're offended? IT WAS TONGUE IN CHEEK
danw··on A London pub now accepts payment in Bitcoin
I think bitcoins just count as assets
danw··on On Being A Designer And A Developer: Not Quite Unicorn Rare
Nope.
danw··on Why Brit Ruby 2013 was cancelled and why this is not ok
You are running an event. Running events is hard. You do not have money to cover upfront costs. Seek sponsorship to cover upfront costs.

Sponsor is possibly concerned over conference diversity. Solutions:

1) Address sponsors concerns

2) Seek alternate sponsor without the concerns

3) Seek non-sponsorship funding (bank loan, kickstarter)

4) Cancel conference, transfer blame onto those who stated event diversity.

danw··on Why Brit Ruby 2013 was cancelled and why this is not ok
This is all I could find. The @britruby account has deleted some of their tweets too.

danw··on Why Brit Ruby 2013 was cancelled and why this is not ok
Looking at the "trolls" I can't see any trolling. I see people criticising the conference for fair reasons that they care about, and trying to be helpful after initial snarky tweets.

This is not trolling. And I absolutely agree with their criticisms.

danw··on Why Brit Ruby 2013 was cancelled and why this is not ok
What were the original tweets that caused so much trouble? I've tried to gather what I can but I don't see much 'trolling', just criticism, some polite and constructive, some less.

And there's a few tweets by @britruby that have been deleted.

danw··on Peter Thiel: Startup CEO Salaries Shouldn’t Be Above $150,000
This. In your 20s and earning more than £20k? Well done. Now shut up and ship.
danw··on The Hack Day Manifesto
Specifically for Science Hackday there's http://www.sciencehackday.com/.

In general http://lanyrd.com/ is the closest I've found, but it's still not comprehensive.

danw··on The Hack Day Manifesto
This checklist seems very centred on the UK hackday format (which I very much enjoy). I've noticed US hackdays have a somewhat different culture, with different expectations, as do gamejams, etc
danw··on The Hack Day Manifesto
DHCP pool being exhausted or NAT table getting full are the two main problems I've seen at hackdays
danw··on SlideShare ditches Flash for HTML5
Does that include putting hideous adverts across the slides in 'HTML5'?

(I miss the early scribd & slideshare, before they started trying to make money to survive by plastering the place with adverts)

danw··on Carol Bartz Out at Yahoo; CFO Interim CEO
"Why doesn't Yahoo take a few million dollars in seed money and start a bunch of companies under its own umbrella using some of its own people?"

They did, it was called Yahoo Brickhouse. Yahoo closed it in 2008[1]. I'd love to know more about what did and didn't work there

danw··on History of the [Western] world in 100 seconds [According to Wikipedia]
The title appears to be a play on the BBC's popular A History of the World in 100 Objects: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/.

Also the bias highlights the flaw in the underlying data which is the English version of wikipedia

danw··on Lanyrd (YC W11) launches session planner / coverage tracker for SXSW Interactive
Would love to learn more about that

"The infamous party scene is already well addressed by an abundance of other startups."

- Is there a list of these apps?

danw··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually code at a hackathon?
I noticed Leeds Hack solve this by the judges going around all the teams in the morning and having a friendly chat about the hacks being made. Gives them a chance to better understand the hacks as hackers aren't always good presenters and they get to directly ask "Which bits of this did you write today?".
danw··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually code at a hackathon?
Can't say I've had this problem at any of the UK hackdays I frequently attend, only the US ones I've been to.

I think one of the differences is having an overnight. The networkers and loiterers bugger off after a few hours leaving just the developers and designers overnight who want to actually make interesting things.

danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
I could draw the stick people in SVG
danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
Some folks seem to have dns problems with it, no idea why
danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
Thanks for the heads up, I've fixed the all.css 404.

The raphael code could do with cleaning up too

danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
I wouldn't expect much difference. Weekends tend to be busiest as most folks work weekdays for example
danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
Wednesdays used to be quietest for cinemas in the UK but now it's one of the busiest thanks to the Orange 241 offer that's been running the past few years
danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
Good point, I should find a way to indicate what the graph is for.
danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
Yes it could be expanded. Because the Foursquare api doesn't provide historical data it takes a few weeks of monitoring the venue before I have useful data for it however
danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
Whoops. I should integrate with http://opening-times.co.uk/ perhaps. Although places like the fantastic Soane and Geffrye seem to get very few Foursquare checkins even at the busiest of times
danw··on When Should I Visit? - A 24 hour hack I made, what do you think?
Thanks. I certainly need to add some kind of index/homepage that lists all the venues. The current 'venue roulette' navigation isn't exactly the best approach.
danw··on Best Website Designs of 2010
I prefer the Drawar best of roundups because at least they provide a few paragraphs of explanation for each screenshot explaining what makes it exceptional: http://www.drawar.com/posts/2010-best-designs-2nd-quarter
danw··on How do iPhone apps Instagram/DailyBooth/Path implement large center tab buttons?
That's lovely apart from the fact that having a camera button is inconsistent with tab navigation.
