danschumann··on Why is it traitorous to understand the people you disagree with?
Why does no one listen to the person who rejects the false/artificial dichotomy?
danschumann··on When we learn more about a stranger, we feel like they know us better too
Yeah and the people who seem to have a smaller gap seem to die young. Farley and John Candy were said to be very nice to the "little people".
danschumann··on When we learn more about a stranger, we feel like they know us better too
So to combat falling into parasocial not-really-relationships, we should see their content as not really them, not really indicative of who they are, anything we have to tell ourselves to not feel as if we're connected when we're not. False connection is worse than no connection at all, like believing lies is worse than "I just don't know".
danschumann··on Ask HN: Is anyone else glad the crypto market is crashing?
People who belong trading in the market are the people who can figure out how to make money in any condition. The rest of the people, the long hodlers, will probably be fine. If you hold bitcoin for 2 years, you basically have not lost money since its inception.
danschumann··on We need a middle class for startups
For real, most VC's could take 100 different shots on solo devs who just need their living expenses paid... like me.
danschumann··on Tell HN: Facebook is blocking the publiccode.eu open letter initiative as spam
With so many large "crime waves", these small ripples which seem like crimes... Are they? Is MZ(read: Mark Zuckerberg) next to AC(read: Al Capone)? Does he still, in his heart of hearts, refer to his users as "stupid *f's"(as he referred to them in 2000's for "trusting" him. Nothing changed to make his users any smarter, so getting caught openly admitting how he feels did not change his opinion on his users, merely changed who he talks openly with, and the medium.
danschumann··on The gambler's fallacy is not a fallacy?
I've heard a voice say "You can't let this guy get lucky" in the back of my head, when doing a particularly dumb gamble, so there is some sense of fragility in the degenerate gamblers, intending to break to get that sweet rush of self victimization. "Don't touch that, it's evil!" -time bandits
danschumann··on Vim – Minimal Setup Explained
For me, minimal setup means installing on a fresh machine. At this point, my vimrc automatically installs plugins if they're not installed.. otherwise it's one command. So it's just copy/paste and maybe one run command, and then vim environment is exactly the same on the new machine (it auto downloads).
danschumann··on Custom JavaScript controls can't capture the nuance of form fields (2021)
"The most efficient system is no system" -Elon Musk
danschumann··on The best proof that the Earth spins
Coriolis will actually effect a long range projectile, but not by much.. (basically the earth spinning under a bullet with a sufficiently high arc).
danschumann··on Web3 and crypto skepticism is growing and people are finally starting to listen
Right, but if they empowered to move, they have only a limited list of countries to select from. Those countries could be puppet states, corrupted, etc.... So what if one of those countries were to be formed on decentralized, open source principles?

I guess what I'm saying is we should start a new country that will be constitutionally immune to some of the new challenges of modern times.

danschumann··on Web3 and crypto skepticism is growing and people are finally starting to listen
Moreover, what is the fundamental difference between a government and a religion? Should governments be compatible with religions, and should religions be compatible with governments?
danschumann··on Web3 and crypto skepticism is growing and people are finally starting to listen

What is a religion, if not an extension of citizenship overlayed onto existing governments? It's basically additional rules you follow, with some benefits of membership.
danschumann··on Web3 and crypto skepticism is growing and people are finally starting to listen
Is it possible to have a decentralized country?

Take the united states... people are basically free to sneak in, without becoming residents, without "downloading the American OS into their brains" aka citizenship.

Now, what if all countries allowed this? Or, what if a "decrentralized country" offered citizenship with no actual geographic location?

Does American citizenship offer people benefits overseas? For example hostage situations? What if there was a better, decentralized country, that would come to your aid?

danschumann··on Make Front End Shit Again (2018)
What drove us away from making fun shit? Was it our inferior need to make money? I used to think I was the greatest computer guy around until a guy in his dorm room, one year older than me, suddenly became a millionaire and then a billionaire. He made me feel so inferior, I lost the plot. It wasn't like being good at art as a kid, feeling valued, and then later on in life, realizing art isn't my thing, in a moment of disappointment, and then dismissing it as a career option. It was more like, seeing what he did, being greedy to want to copy it, and then seeking to be like a lesser version of zuckerberg, and to make an inferior facebook, while completely losing what I was doing in the first place, like the ultimate distraction.
danschumann··on The Righteousness Fix
I find for me, looking at feelings wheel, "valued" is the emotion I feel regarding addiction. If an activity makes me feel valued, I come back and back and back. This is true also if the activity makes me feel inferior sometimes ( such as losing a game ). Addictive activities also have an infuriating component ( whereby I want to control more than I can control ). They also have a thankful component (relief after winning a hard game).
danschumann··on Youth suicide attempts soared during pandemic, CDC report says
Not to be reductive of a complex issue, but when I first discovered feelings wheel,I kept the tab open, and at various points in the day, I would attempt to pinpoint my exact emotional state and sort it into a category. If you don't have the categories, you can't sort things out. A house cannot be clean unless there is a place for everything.
danschumann··on Homelessness rises faster where rent exceeds a third of income (2018)
The highness is indeed based on where you live, which is your choice. As Dave Ramsey says, "you don't get a pass on the math because you live in California". You people are nutbags. It also affeCts what people will put up with when it comes to regulatory policy (the constraint that puts a squeeze on building new housing). People learn empty logic until they reach the real world, when they have an extremely rude awakening, and the suicide rate continues to increase as more and more people cannot bear to face what the real world entails, when they come to the violent realization that they are unfit for the real world, because they've been coddled by the school system and taught the opposite of what their priorities should have been (such as encouraging debt to get a degree ). Degrees are great, but a degree means you must work to pay it off, and if you must work at Starbucks while you wish you had more time to devote to artwork, you realize you were served a raw deal. So my soapboxed friend, isolated in your ivory cage, trying to sound smart, does your skepticism ever hinder on curiosity? Physics of what is truly real will catch up to you all, I persist it!!! Methinks!
danschumann··on Homelessness rises faster where rent exceeds a third of income (2018)
Schools should teach ratios about housing expenses vs income. Somehow we should make kids practice budgeting, controlling spending, etc, not just teaching, but practicing for years, because when you get out of school, there are are a few simple, yet difficult(emotionally), things which will dictate success more than the memorized logic. Emotions take practice.
danschumann··on Retailers say thefts are at crisis level. The numbers say otherwise
I discovered this form of theft in 2003 ... In high school, I realized I could fill my cart, commit no crime until I was near the exit of the store, then transfer the items from cart to a shopping bag, and walk out without paying, running halfway around the block to my car (No plates on camera). I later believed in karma when there was a break in and only my stolen dvds(as well as my entire collection) were taken.
danschumann··on Too many species have been lumped together into Homo sapiens
Species like the elusive computer programmer, often avoiding sunlight at all costs, are one of the many species included, lol. I know HN hates satire but I can't stop humor.
danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
Sounds good. I'm still dialing in the categories. The goal is to have a complete list of all the distinct emotions a person can have, with simple definitions and (for lack of a better word) distinctions. Every event in a life should be able to be categorized into the categories, without unused categories, in a way that feels satisfyingly granular.

I think "furious", the more I think of it, is an anger regarding lack (ie if someone's house gets vandalized and the feel a loss in property value). Curiosity could culminate with inquisitiveness, which functionally feels like adopting new beliefs. Skepticism can culminate with dismissiveness. So as long as you're open to the possibility that your mind could be changed, it counts as curiosity, I suppose.

danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
Most of the time people say they're curious on the internet, they're actually feeling dismissive, but just need more ammo to be able to dismiss the person. Which makes it skepticism, not curiosity.
danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
Feelings wheel, my friend. Jealous and Furious are similar, jealous is when you want someone else to not have something, and furious is when they come for your stuff. Infuriated and annoyed are linked, and infuriated is when you get so annoyed you start yelling back. I'm trying to make all the emotional categories more distinct in my philosphy, recently posted a video as such https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfZwxLUrlrk
danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
Does an individual voter have a responsibility to know also the disgusting events of modern times or only the happy ones? Twitter seemed to overweight discuss-ting events and angry events. Maybe cuz I avoid such things on other platforms, I used twitter to stay informed on the darker side. Sure, my fault. Disregard this whole thread! Lol.
danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
Because echo chamber is distant from the rest of people. Distant-> withdrawn or numb ( both anger emotions )
danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
I couldn't know what it produced at the time. Keyword is "used".
danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
If I had to include happiness emotions... I guess getting some of the videos made me feel valued a bit, maybe thankful now and again? Maybe feeling successful if I pwned a pleb, but these are empty thrills.
danschumann··on I resigned from Twitter
Twitter made me feel: some combination of violated, indignant, numb, inferior, empty, powerless, disappointed, embarassed, furious, annoyed, and infuriated.
danschumann··on Underrated Reasons to Be Thankful
Feelings wheel is the most underrated thing I have discovered this year.
