This is a great piece of software that I use under Linux and MacOS
dano··on Own a weather station? We want your data
The San Diego Rowing Club has an Ambient Weather WS-2902 weather station and live camera feed [1] and the details of how we collect, process, and present the data. [2] If one clicks on the static image you'll get a live feed. The static image is updated frequently and is a better mobile experience. The AW API can be problematic at times so later this summer I'll reconfigure the station to do a GET request to a local device and process the data without a cloud dependency.

dano··on Engineering for Slow Internet
Back in 1999 while at MP3.com it was common for people outside of engineering to complain about speed when they were at home. In the office we had 1G symmetric (that was lot 25 yrs ago!) between the office and primary DC. I tied to explain that the large graphics wanted by some, and heavy videos didn't work great for dial up or with snow cable modem connections. Surely the servers are misconfigured!
dano··on I love my wife. My wife is dead (1946)
This is a worthwhile read. Grief is really not as cut and dried as it's sometimes made out to be. As Lewis came around to understanding, and perhaps Feynman too, we had something special, something grand, and to remember is comforting.
dano··on Ultrasonic Coffee
This! I was stunned by the quality and availability of good coffee down under. I figured it was a tea culture and wasn't that a mile of the mark.
dano··on Some 787 Production Test Records Were Falsified, Boeing Says
The article doesn't state the exact number of tests skipped or falsified, but the headline is misleading. It isn't 787 tests, it is tests on 787 model aircraft.

It would not be a surprise to see HQ move back to Washington and of the potential replacements, Shanahan started his career at BA as an engineer. [1]

dano··on Publishers secure widespread support in copyright battle with Internet Archive
MP3.com made mechanical copies without permission. Pretty black & white. Vivendi Universal acquired the company for $372 million in 2002 mostly because they were interested in moving forward with digital distribution. The MP3.com engineering team then went on to build PressPlay with Sony and Universal, which was later sold to Roxio and renamed Napster. I'd be happy to answer any questions about MP3.com.
dano··on Publishers secure widespread support in copyright battle with Internet Archive
Position statement on 'Controlled Digital Lending' (CDL) [1] is an interesting read. Within it there is the clause "Because there is no directly analogous case on point, this Statement offers a more detailed explanation of how fair use and copyright exhaustion can work together to effectuate CDL practices:"

The idea of CDL is indeed novel and possibly worth pursuing through the courts. However, it is an argument fraught with financial peril for the IA because of the statutory penalty structure of US Copyright law.

dano··on Publishers secure widespread support in copyright battle with Internet Archive
Hubris in the area of copyright is not new [1] nor novel. It is unfortunate that we (me too) fail to learn from the path trodden by others. There are things about US Copyright law that are quite over the top [2] that should be repealed or fixed [3], but disagreeing with it doesn't it suddenly legal. Back in the day when I did a lot of music licensing I would have copyright discussions over a beer with people. After a while I figured that this was "cocktail party licensing." In the morning you'll wake up with a hangover in bed with your attorney.

dano··on Ask HN: How to run an old-school mailing list?
I'm on a list or two that are run through https://groups.io/ and it works well. I also run a few private mailing lists on mailman and am loath to ever apply patches to that machine - it is complicated to set up, but works fine once done. In a greenfield implementation a docker installation might be better https://docs.mailman3.org/en/latest/install/docker.html

dano··on The Psychology of Apple Packaging
“Tiffany has one thing in stock that you cannot buy of him for as much money as you may offer; he will only give it to you. And that is one of his boxes.”

— The New York Evening Sun, 1899

Receiving or buying an Apple product comes in a box that is a gift to you. Carefully conceived, expertly crafted, and simply elegant.

dano··on Italy divided over new pineapple pizza
As my long ago roommate from Long Island stated as she opened the pizza box to find ham & pineapple "That's not a pizza! You don't put fruit on a pizza." We're still good friends to this day.
dano··on Swiss Privacy and Honest Competition
Yes, I have some Swiss friends who wish I would use Threema, I politely declined and we've agreed to use Signal. After a while it becomes difficult to distinguish the difference between these applications with the noteable exception of WhatsApp which is owned by Meta who I absolutely don't trust.
dano··on Cats kill a staggering number of species across the world
A primary difference is that cats were introduced into environments as a non-native species and have become the apex predator. This is especially true in New Zealand and Australia. Unlike native carnivorous mammals such as the Tasmanian Devil, Quall's, and Bandicoots, cats hunt for food and sport rather than act as scavengers. Cats in Tasmania have no natural predators other than humans. I've had many cats for pets and yet in an unbalanced environment short of predators, they really can cause tremendous damage.

Short of an all out ban, keeping them indoors or in a catery or controlled in some manner seems reasonable.

dano··on A decade of Have I Been Pwned
As part of fixing security problems 20+ years ago we put together a migration process that included cracking passwords. First off we created an interface for updating your password and that interface essentially ran through all the tests that the cracking software to better ensure you'd picked something good. Passwords were expired every 90 days (remember, this was 2001. The migration first set the expiration date so that people got used to the process and then, on occasion, we'd run the passwords through a brute force attack. To your point, the users were most unhappy when their password would get cracked and expired, but that's life. 2FA, keys, etc.. is really an improvement over what we've had for such a long time.

dano··on Electric mountain: Power station that shows the beauty of infrastructure
I visited Cruachan in 2019 by happenstance. It is really cool! I'm going to look for the Star Wars tie in - the architecture certainly does fit the theme. You can watch a Pathe video on Royal Opening of the dam and power station here https://www.britishpathe.com/asset/87792/
dano··on Google paid $26.3B in 2021 to be the default search engine
Firefox needs to make Profiles a first class UI function. Yes, I understand that Firefox has containers, but I loath explaining containers to non-technical people. Chrome and Safari Profiles are much easier to use.
dano··on Issues with 1.1.1.1 public resolver and WARP
Running your own resolver that points directly to root servers is also an option. https://nlnetlabs.nl/projects/unbound/about/

It isn't too complicated to set up and provides faster responses than external DNS servers, especially after the cache gets built up a bit.

dano··on Bard Can Now Connect to Your Google Apps
This would be useful for Google Workspaces if it respected all of the ACL's across shared google drives. To be able to ask questions about the document repository would be a nice thing to have. Currently Bard isn't supported for Workspace.

dano··on New York’s crackdown on Airbnb began Tuesday
A capacity utilization study of housing in major metropolitan areas with an gap analysis would lead to better planning of new construction.
dano··on Doing laundry on campus without a phone
Here are some driving factors for this change:

- tenants have asked for it because they never seem to have the right amount of change

- banks are declining to accept unrolled coins

- better accounting between owners and property managers
