danmg··on Thinking of a Cybersecurity Career?
Step 4, in the US at least, is to lobby for more H1B bodies.

While they may or may not have the skills that are actually needed, the H1B system makes feudal servants bound to the corporation.

danmg··on Thinking of a Cybersecurity Career?
This is a predictable pattern at this point:

1) Employers don't like the fact that the labour they require has skills that a lot of time to become competent at and the labour wants to be compensated accordingly.

2) They get universities to start offering degree programs tailored to churn out new graduates who are willing to work for entry level wages.

3) Employers complain that the grads who come out of these programs are unprepared to do the same job as the old guard.

Using Metasploit, Nessus, and nmap should be a 1 credit elective course in a CS degree. Not top billing.

danmg··on Rewriting Fortran Software in Rust
PGI's Fortran compiler, bought by NVidia a few years ago, has excellent GPU extensions. You set an attribute on an array, move stuff on there, do your computation, move stuff back. It was the easiest GPU coding experience I've had.
danmg··on Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting
It doesn't do anything in the USA in normal automatic mode since the ADA became law.
danmg··on MaXX Interactive Desktop: A Re-Implementation of the IRIX Interactive Desktop
CDE started basically instantly on 90s workstations after login.
danmg··on Barclays Bank Using Internet Archive as CDN for JavaScript Files?
An internet named 'weev' tried to do that when the iPad first came out. He found they had an open json endpoint for completing email addresses from the device IMEI. He ended up in prison for trying to publicly shame AT&T,

danmg··on Show HN: HN Deck – An alternative way to browse Hacker News
How are you getting that?

$curl --head https://damng.github.io/hackernews-rss-with-inlined-content/...

HTTP/2 200

server: GitHub.com

content-type: application/rss+xml; charset=utf-8

Chrome just doesn't support RSS.

danmg··on Show HN: HN Deck – An alternative way to browse Hacker News
Here's mine. It inlines the content from the links on hn into an RSS feed.

danmg··on Students are failing AP tests because the College Board can’t handle HEIC images
Why does Safari still not support webp then?
danmg··on PCem – An emulator of old PC hardware platforms
PCem shines for emulating all the old hardware required to run old operating systems that were not DOS. VirtualBox and VMWare do not work will for this since they usually since they don't have guest extensions and working drivers for things like OS/2 2.1 and Slackware 3.0.
danmg··on Court: Violating a site’s terms of service isn’t criminal hacking
Outside of limiting their own legal liability, it's a cargo cult.
danmg··on How to burn the most money with a single click in Azure
Most cellphone providers provide you with a text message when you're over 90% of your hard cap, and you can login and buy more bandwidth if you really need it.

The same could be done with cloud doo-dads.

danmg··on 800Gb of possible Census Bureau data (tax records, etc) leaked. Check your data
Yes it's their fault for using their own name. It's not the fault of the people keeping creepy dossiers on random customers that creates this hazard.
danmg··on 800Gb of possible Census Bureau data (tax records, etc) leaked. Check your data
It's all the data that's not census data and the fact that it's joined with census data. Why is this data joined with tax information, calls to fire departments, and bike share information?
danmg··on Why the EAX register of x86 is called that
No. because you still have the opcodes that operate on just 64/32/16/8 bits of the register.
danmg··on Stanford CS248: Implement an SVG Rasterizer
They're the same. The only difference here is you have to use an xml parsing library to read the input instead of rolling your own parser and spec.
danmg··on Stanford CS248: Implement an SVG Rasterizer
No. We implemented a 3d software frame buffer pipeline at my non-Standford, non-"elite" computer science school, in C and with no dependencies other than the standard library, for our computer graphics class.
danmg··on Firm wielding Theranos patents asks judge to block coronavirus test
The system was changed a few years ago to first to file, not first to invent. There's no reason to believe that anything has actually been invented behind that patent.
danmg··on Firm wielding Theranos patents asks judge to block coronavirus test
yes.
danmg··on We all wear tinfoil hats now
They're pretending that this is the case as a form of guerilla marketing for ad tech.

"See how influential these ads can be! Someone in the GRU can pick the president by spending 100k on facebook ads."

It's self-serving like everything else these companies do. So they're willing to go in front of congress and do kabuki theater about how serious their position to influence people is and make guidelines---which they will undoubtedly ignore.

danmg··on CNN-generated images are surprisingly easy to spot for now
It's not ambiguous which CNN they meant from the rest of the words in the title.
danmg··on The ReiserFS Filesystem (2000)
Is it really 'justice' if he could have only gotten three years with that plea agreement he turned down?

If anything he's the victim of his own Asperger's for thinking that proof in a court of law is the same thing as a logical proof.

danmg··on What people in tech had to say about JavaScript when it debuted in 1995 (2017)
It was two things around 2004-5: 1) people using GWT to make SPAs and 2) the ability to lazy load content through XMLHttpRequest.

GWT was essentially what typescript is today but java and it handled most of the nasty DOM related stuff and browser incompatibilities.

danmg··on The ReiserFS Filesystem (2000)
Hopefully development can continue again in March.
danmg··on What people in tech had to say about JavaScript when it debuted in 1995 (2017)
People liked the rollovers, not javascript. You'd see people try doing them in flash, shockwave, as java applets, activex controls, and I'm probably missing a few.

If they were done in javascript, the code was heavily cargo-culted and cut and paste.

danmg··on What people in tech had to say about JavaScript when it debuted in 1995 (2017)
It was not well liked.

The majority of webpages did not use it, or it was used very sparingly for things like form validation.

Old versions of IE would have a dialog pop up if there was any kind of error during execution which happened frequently.
