danielsamuels··on WordPress base configuration files on GitHub
That link is a great example to demonstrate how much Github search sucks now. You've explicitly searched for filenames of "tits.jpg", but it's showing you a complete mishmash of different files.
danielsamuels··on Things I would build if I worked at GitHub
I've gotta say, I strongly disagree with this:

> GitHub already has a great code search

At some point in the last year or so Github rolled out a new search engine which drastically reduced it's usefulness. Any moderately complex search query now has all of the modifiers and key bits stripped out making your search results unnecessarily cluttered and somewhat useless. I consider it to be one of the worst parts of the site these days.

5356, happy with that.
danielsamuels··on Why doesn't Windows recognize a USB device plugged into another port? (2004)
..and by lately, you mean 11 years ago.
danielsamuels··on Ask HN: Open source OCR library?
Yeah, I used Tesseract to solve Countdown puzzles on Android, code here: https://github.com/danielsamuels/countdown/blob/master/scree...
danielsamuels··on Raspberry Pi Official Case
> RPi is $25-35. A phone is at least $100, most probably $300-ish. What would you prefer to accidentally fry when fumbling with DIY electronics?

I wonder how much of the phone cost is the display, cellular chips, microphones, speakers, light sensors, accelerometers etc?

danielsamuels··on RocketChat: Slack-like online chat, built with Meteor
You can't be a very loyal employee given that Slack has been out for less than 2 years.
danielsamuels··on How is Javascript used within the Spotify desktop application?
Starring songs was also removed and individual songs you "Save to Your Music" get bundled in with every song from every album and artist you've saved or followed and the songs from some playlists it seems. It's a complete mess.
danielsamuels··on Disassembling the Amazon Dash
I imagine if you build up a collection of these for a variety of products you'll need something to hold them all, perhaps it could be called a DashBoard?
danielsamuels··on How Googlebot crawls JavaScript
WebDriverWait and expected_conditions.presence_of_element_located are your friends. Here's some sample code from our automation project: https://gist.github.com/danielsamuels/a39e0fef4e15d2ab04b5
danielsamuels··on How World of Warcraft led to Glassdoor
Not any more though, you can easily go from 0-100 in a single digit number of days now.
danielsamuels··on How World of Warcraft led to Glassdoor
> Which is very hard (apparently) to accomplish and I think they get reset now and then. There are other key achievements in WoW such as being the first guild to kill a boss etc.

These are the same thing. When a new raiding tier is released the rankings become relevant to that tier, so the first guild to kill the final boss on the hardest level of difficulty (currently Mythic) becomes the world first guild.

danielsamuels··on Racking Mac Pros
Is 11 days of uptime supposed to be impressive?
danielsamuels··on GitHub's down?
So you switched from one central platform to another singular central platform? Am I missing something here?
danielsamuels··on Please consider the impacts of banning HTTP
Are you trying to garner sympathy from the Hacker News crowd? Because you're not going to get it.
danielsamuels··on The button: social experiment driving Reddit crazy
They don't, you can have multiple people get the same flair at the same time. Most trackers will tell you how many clicks occurred on each reset.
danielsamuels··on Django 1.8 released
And Django 1.4 was released on the 23rd of March 2012, so if you stick with the LTS releases you very rarely have to upgrade. I have to say though, I wouldn't want to upgrade a 1.4 app to 1.8 - lots of big changes have happened between those two releases.
danielsamuels··on Slack was hacked
You can use other apps such as Authy too.
danielsamuels··on Worldwide DNS Performance
They recently switched to using CloudFlare, look at the detail graphs - http://www.dnsperf.com/provider/DigitalOcean

I'm not sure why they're still so high though.

danielsamuels··on Fear of Apple
Yeah, this is literally covered in the article..
danielsamuels··on Show HN: Rabbits – Send an email to get any grunt-work programming job completed
Possibly the worst comparison you could have made.
danielsamuels··on Bidding farewell to Google Code
For us it would be the free private repos.
danielsamuels··on Django REST framework 3.1 released
Perhaps, but it's definitely wrong in places. I was working with a project this afternoon and the examples given didn't actually work. I should definitely take some notes on which bits were wrong, as it would be useful to have them fixed.
danielsamuels··on Has_many considered harmful
I hate nothing more than "X considered harmful" titles on Hacker News. Something about them really infuriates me.
danielsamuels··on WEB DEVELOPER (DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES)
Github hosts code, Github also hosts websites. It's not too outrageous.
danielsamuels··on Will WhatsApp kill Slack?
No.
danielsamuels··on µBlock for Firefox
I tried this out for a couple of weeks after the "Adblock makes things slower" article came out, and I found it was blocking more stuff - but not necessarily the right stuff. I was finding that sites were breaking, stuff was disappearing and it was because of uBlock. I think I was trying to log into Medium and the Twitter and Facebook had been hidden, literally breaking the functionality of the site. That's not what I want from an adblocker.
danielsamuels··on Applying NASA coding standards to JavaScript
This article is almost blogspam, poorly written, very little content. The linked PDF is far more interesting.
danielsamuels··on Can't you just turn up the volume?
I really wish this app was available on OS X, I would very happily pay for it and use it every day.
danielsamuels··on NSA Reports to the President's Intelligence Oversight Board
Unfortunately 'governments' and 'efficiency' don't seem to go well together.
