I'd like to see cold storage providers split from app providers.

Strict enforcement policy on cold storage data warehouses. And sensible policy for the app providers, like not caching PII.

Implement and enforce at the fed level using this division in a manner that is something akin to Glass-Steagall.

Owning data should not be something providers can ever exploit.

[edit]: I also think this could be used as a means to break apart Big Tech

The site uses words like Spreadsheet, Desktop, and GUI and appears to be supported by SAP.

Does this support direct integration with Win32, Java, SAP (GUI), Citrix, or anything else that is not driven by the browser?

dandelo1953··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
This!

I am completely confounded that I have not heard of any real legislative proposals to establish a clear separation of duties in regards storing data and selling it.

There is an obvious conflict of interest if you both have my data and are granted free reign to do what you want with it (via click through agreements that modern society is now dependent upon) you have unfair leverage over me.

If you are able to do this en mass without much competition... I'm thankful things haven't gotten worse than they are.

Something similar to Glass-Steagall is desperately needed in the digital era. Hopefully somebody is working on it...

dandelo1953··on On Surviving Screens and Social Media in Isolation
The CDC is warning about mental health impact as a result of extended isolation. They are trying to encourage public messaging that supports social connecting using technology.

Can you use your knowledge to provide ways to do that outside of Twitter?

And do you disagree that there is a void in our social construct by this distancing that is not somewhat emulated by services like Twitter, even if imperfectly?

Instead of thinking of advertising as "technology" you might want to look into the military-esque research that brought it into the free market. Just like the internet, psyops was first destructed and formalized by people that value information over influence. As only one will beget the other with any statistical certainty.

For that to happen there needs to be strong leadership from the top incentivizing standing down behavior with subsidies, not winner take all rock em sock em race to tragedy of the commons

Does this mean some abstraction is lost between the creation phase and final "save to pdf" phase? It'd seem ridiculous to not easily be able to track blocks while it's a WIP.....

️ Things happen.

It's embarrassing to have to disclose such a thing to the public, but they did. I don't recall anything nefarious and they owned up - to at least some extent.

That is more than a lot companies can say. Is that the ONLY reason why you dis Lenovo? Because if so, it makes them that much more attractive in my book of flippant remarks

dandelo1953··on How housing became the world’s biggest asset class
I don't know a lick about the book mentioned or literal references you have been silently recommended to study. Obviously the implied message that you've yet to pick up on is that you should try and research your own ideas before profoundly postulating positive platitudes that are .... full of P?

anyway, i suspect your "idea" is bad from the start... you say tax consumption... AND THEN tax the (just?) born... do you even darwin bro?

You are giving the disenfranchised the shaft from the outset.. who do you think would like this? who do you surround yourself with to get to this line of thinking? Rhetorically, I'm done.

Yo!

I'm willing to volun-tribute my time to play MITM between you and GOOG queries to do the grunt work in researching options in how best to open this thing up.

I've got some big plans that I am hoping to get my employer on board with so I can finally make my first attempt at spinning up my current variation of the always just out of reach, Tantalus's unicorn.

Not sure if my contact is retrievable thru my public HN acct bits. If not, I'll check back here and provide if there's interest in at least shooting the shinola with another like mind for a minute.

We're neck deep in it. Of course no one recognizes it.

$1000, as seen in terms of security is not much to spend on something "perishable". Fixing your secure phone takes more than knowing how to RTFM.....

dandelo1953··on Reputation management firms bury Google results by placing flattering content
This subject touches on a lot of things tangential to a lot of words like world wide problems. Many things wrong in the online work seem systemic and tend to magnify our IRL problems.

Is anyone out there creative enough to step outside the box enough to even envision a system that can support our current economic environment, let alone see a way to get this ship on that course before it's sunk?

dandelo1953··on An account is now required to read Reddit comment threads?
Just want to say I cannot agree with these sentiments more.

Google turned a seemingly benign industry into something people now regularly refer to as "weaponized" messaging.

The pen is mightier than the sword. The spoken word is mightier than both. We need to relearn how to talk to one another instead of relying on what used to be a useful heuristic shortcut in our day to day life.

We got drunk on the convenience of industry automating massaging before we even realized tech would lead to automation could scale at such exponential rates.

Our linear thinking in 3d space time is not able to keep up with all the degrees of separation in play anymore.

Marketing is a joke and everyone knows it. This is the real industry that is "too big to fail". And that they pinned it on the penultimate boogey man (aka money) is just more fuel to that fire.

dandelo1953··on How I Switched to Plan 9
I know I can google this, but I am really looking for a more personal answer that others might also gleam insight from.

What are the efforts like for non x86 architectures, if any exist?

Are there working kernels for arm as there is for *nix with things like Raspberry Pi?

I haven't started my IoT journey yet. I am wondering if plan9 would be stable enough to tinker with in that space and in order to capture two birds with one trap.

dandelo1953··on Intel's CIP wants to collect the “categories of websites you visit”
They can strip the request down to the domain name, hash that with a OTP to do a fuzzy lookup on their end which would be difficult (not impossible) to reverse per reference, but would require APT to do en masse.

There is probably some flaw with this method... curious if others think there's a "safe enough" way to do something like this...

dandelo1953··on Facebook, Google Fund Nonprofits Shaping Privacy Debate
Data that needs to be shared should be signed by sender at every port of exit and by receiver at every port of entry. All significant transformations should also be signed in a manner that allows one to follow data to it's real world source.

If applying complete attribution to our data was the norm, for at least some markets places, entities empowered by our data would be much less likely to just "share" it willy nilly.

Dark markets will always exist, but I think attribution of data would incentives certain corporations (health, banking, etc) to act in their users better interests, at least compared to what we have now.

dandelo1953··on Unknown Fund: Investing and donating to support anonymity
In case it wasn't clear, I am not suggesting ALL data must be signed/attributed.

Entertainment, for example, can be safely consumed and have little impact on your day to day regardless of the source. Provided it's clearly meant for entertainment purposes.

However once you introduce some dependency of trust into your process (monetary transactions, health related data exchange, etc), I believe most people in this crowd would agree that they want crypto identity and attribution applied to the data at every stage of transformation.

And then there's everything in the middle... which again, I think should be left to the individual. Norms would eventually develop that would guide best practices.

Pipe dream stuff I know, but I don't see another way out. Open to other suggestions. And especially open to criticism about this approach. I don't want to be the one with the answer.

I just want an answer.

dandelo1953··on Unknown Fund: Investing and donating to support anonymity
I think this "solution" is the exact inverse of what is actually needed: Strong identity and attribution.

identity need not be just an "individual". It can be a group of individuals that agree to mutually sign data before dissemination.

Individuals, corporations and your toaster can create as many identities as necessary.

Right now we are all living seemingly schizoid lifestyle because we are forced to partition multiple selves into molds that are being provided to us.

The partitioning is necessary for organizing information. But the way it is partitioned should be flexible enough for the end user to have the ultimate say in what and how that information is curated. Currently, all we have are blackbox "algorithms." People are asking for transparency, thinking this will solve the problem. I think it will only lead to obfuscating the problem even more so.

Until the individual has unfettered control, we will always be playing this game.

I really wish conversations would wind back to towards discussing ideas tangential to the web of trust...

I think that problem was hard to solve for a reason. Being impossible not being one of them... but an easy position to sell if you feared the consequences ultimately lead to a loss of control.

dandelo1953··on The importance of decentralisation
I have spent a lot of time thinking about this and related market influences since entering the career world 20 years ago.

It started around early 2000's, while working in market research. Got me thinking about all the money dumped into it being a waste... if people could just exchange information freely in some organized fashion.

During 2000s - 2015s the corporations worked hard to form the scaffolding of, and then solidify this organization as they envisioned it.

They too saw the opportunity I was seeing. However, their incentivized profits over morals. The temptation to harness control over this exchange information was to great to overcome. They started off innocently enough. They were just "gardens" without the walls at first. In general, the public was free to admire, as well as take part in, what felt like cultivating meaningful dialogue that theoretically should only enhance life for everyone.

Fast forward 15 years, the novelty of the garden has worn off. We want to go explore something new. But as the time wore on, the garden slowly evolved into something more akin to a maze. Now we are looking for a way out, but cannot even distinguish the walls of the maze from the exterior walls of the garden.

At this point, I probably don't have to say it. But this "walled garden" is a really just a euphemism for intellectual slavery.

I have ideas on what needs to be done, but they seem to fly in the face of conventional wisdom. Especially when it comes to privacy issues.

To me this tells me I am on the right track, because as hard as I look for other answers, I still end up back with decentralization. This problem is hard. It requires faithful means to accurately identify and attribute data to its source creator.

I believe all the tech we need to make it work is readily available. The missing ingredient is incentive. But it's a chicken/egg problem. Until a majority of people want to faithfully cooperate together, it'll not happen. And no single person will agree to work on something that needs cooperation of the majority if they don't believe in it.

Enough ranting... I'm looking further for people to have discussions along these lines. I have ventured out into meetups and whatnot, but I just cannot make connections with like enough minded people to take my ideas further. I know they aren't unique, but they are worthless without others to share with...
