dandare··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
As you can see by the number of downvotes, sometimes reason is unwelcome even on HN.
dandare··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
When I hear Saudi Arabia I always remember William Sampson, a Canadian citizen who was arrested while working in SA and tortured so badly he lost his mind for a time. Needless to say he confessed to everything countless times.

dandare··on Hydras suggest that sleep evolved before brains
Shout out to the beautiful design of this web. The loop video of the hydra at the beginning is meaningful and super informative!
dandare··on My MacBook Air M1 is dead
What does it mean the SSD is soldered to the motherboard? If I was to loose 2 months of work I would rip the disks off with my teeth. What is the real issue here?
dandare··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
remark 3 - I am not trying to convince anyone, I am trying to form an opinion.
dandare··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
Let's ignore that your numbers are wrong, what is your point? That boys/men should be somehow punished by default? Or that women have it harder?
dandare··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
Remark 1: To my knowledge, it is not uncommon that men switch genders when sharing their stories on reddit simply to get more empathic reception as opposed to some "men up" rebuttal. I did that after a therapist told me a man can not be abused by woman, I wanted to see if I am really emotionally abused or just crazy. It was very helpful.

Remark 2: I vividly remember those gnawing feelings of sexual and romantic unfulfillment I suffered as a young man. But it is quite difficult to talk about those things without being accused of implying that men deserve sex and women are obliged to provide it. This post did an excellent job dancing around all the landmines, but not everybody has the capacity to do that and especially young people should have a safe platform where they could talk about these things.

Remark 3: I have noticed that men's rights activists and feminists nowadays constantly accuse each other that the other group wants privileges, not an actual equality. I would love to see a reputable research on this topic.

dandare··on Internal Combustion Engine
Why are the bearings filled with pressurized oil instead of being normal ball bearings? All the other bearings in the whole car are ball bearings.
dandare··on The health benefits of better air
> Install a HEPA cabin air filter in your car.

If you drive a lot this should be #1 on your list. How come this is not an absolute standard in the automotive industry?

Last time I have tried to purchase a HEPA cabin filter for my Hyundai i40 I failed to find any.

dandare··on Investigating why McDonald's ice cream machines are often broken [video]
Thank you. That video was pain to watch, I hate this low-information-density bs.
dandare··on Surround Sound in Headphones
I would like to SEE the HRTF function in action. Is there maybe a web app where one could see the HRTF function while tinkering with different sound directions?
dandare··on Scientists who say the lab-leak hypothesis for SARS-CoV-2 shouldn't be ruled out
>... for scientists to voice suspicions about a possible lab leak,... especially when there was already a long history of viral disease outbreaks spilling over from nature.

This is a really wired formulation whe we actually know, with absolute certainty, that every pandemic ever suffered was natural.

dandare··on Have I Been Facebooked?
I never shared my phone number with FB, neither for 2FA nor anything else, yet it is in this DB. Could FB get the number via my Android FB app?
dandare··on Murder up 35.7% YTD relative to 2019 (2020)
I want to see a further analysis. A huge jump like this will certainly leave a readable trail in the data. There is plenty we could learn from this.
dandare··on Whistleblower: Ubiquiti Breach “Catastrophic”
Why is the blog not adopted to mobile screen readability?
dandare··on Scientists discover why the human brain is so big
Would the skull of an ape grow larger as well if the brain elarging switch was activated in utero? This is some sci-fi material here.
dandare··on Moore's Law for Everything
Those choices will become illusions.

> Work for another company -> compete for decreasing number of jobs with increasing number of candidates.

> start their own business -> compete with everyone that is smarter than you and/or had a better starting position.

> go live in the forest and live off the land -> this is called poverty.

dandare··on Justice at Spotify
They mention "user-centric model" three times without explaining it at all :(
dandare··on Fabbrica: A sans serif typeface with a utilitarian aesthetic
I like the stroke on the lowercase l. IMHO every good typeface should clearly distinguish between l and I.
dandare··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
RE books not suitable for kids. My 4 year old asked me to reed him a new book he got from who knows where; It was Noah's Ark picture book, looking like this https://www.google.com/search?q=noah%27s+ark+child+book. Right on the third page "God killed all people because they were wicked". My son was upset and demanded an explanation, which I struggled to provide. I have realised how strange it is that we tolerate child books describing mass murder in the name of religion.
dandare··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
Reading the horror stories in this thread, I am asking myself if this is only the issue with US based companies. I have never had this kind of problem with EU based company. Fellow Europeans, what is your experience? Have I just been lucky?
dandare··on Statement on New York Times Article
I am shocked. Why am I shocked? I shouldn't be, but I am. I personally use the reporting on Julian Assange as a litmus paper test on media.
dandare··on “Silicon Valley’s Safe Space” has misinformed readers
Same here, never heard of SSC before and I am reading his older articles right now. A true Streisand effect moment.
dandare··on Statement on New York Times Article
As a white person from a poor post communist country with no colonial history (99.999% white) I cringe when some local SJW parrots the "white privilege" agenda. It just makes no sense in large parts of the world other than US.

dandare··on Statement on New York Times Article
What I find noteworthy about this story is how contentious and weaponized have gender and race become. Out of the four negative claims, one accused Scott of racism and two accused him of of some variant of misogyny. The fourth associated him with some other form of non-pure thinking.

I am afraid things will get worse before they get better. I expect the trumpism/fascism wave will provoke unhealthy reaction and further chain-reaction. My personal lacmus paper is the use of "white male" label as an argument, which is not totally uncommon even here on HN.
