dan_quixote··on Engineers are exploring radical new designs for commercial planes
Pilots can control the bank acceleration, sure. They have much less control over acceleration due to uneven turbulence.
dan_quixote··on U.S. workers have gotten less productive – no one is sure why
> Another study found US clinicians write 4x longer notes

I wasn't aware of this, but as the spouse of a medical provider I know that most US providers are burdened with an ever-present worry about malpractice.

dan_quixote··on Canon EOS R7 Disassembly and Teardown
I got back into it recently after years of not wanting to carry a bulky camera around. I justified it after realizing that "wanting the shot" with my fancy camera drove me to be much more adventurous. If you're thinking seriously about it, I'd highly recommend just about any Fujifilm mirrorless. The XT-4 is kinda defined by film camera ergonomics - primarily meaning that is has the dials you expect from classic pro film cameras (exposure comp, shutter, iso).
dan_quixote··on Why I use Jellyfin for my home media library
That's why I left plex. Every app changed interfaces around too much and resulted in frustration for everyone in my family.
dan_quixote··on Why I use Jellyfin for my home media library
So far I've been happy with Jellyfin with one exception - the lack of AppleTV app. I've been using a third-party tool (MrMC) with limited success.
dan_quixote··on The smash and grab of Kroger-Albertsons
There's nothing wrong with a healthy profit margin, per se. The potential problem here is that we have a de facto monopoly in many regions which controls access to FOOD.
dan_quixote··on Pitchfork: Rack HTTP server for shared-nothing architecture
> I’m still surprised that we haven’t seen much larger improvements in Ruby performance over the last decade given the large number of major tech companies using Rails.

Every place I've worked in the last ~5 years has treated Ruby as "legacy" code for better or worse.

dan_quixote··on MAR1D: First-Person Mario
tom7 is awesome. He made an awesome and hilarious video years ago about his SIGBOVIK paper/research on AI playing NES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOCurBYI_gY
dan_quixote··on Evidence-based conclusions about ADHD
That site feels like a cruel joke. Every aspect is either distracting or unreadable - collapsed panels, un-explained acronyms, zero discernible order, etc. Even if you think you don't have ADHD, this site will make you question it!
dan_quixote··on Researchers find ‘significant rates’ of sinking ground in Houston suburbs
And general desirability - diverse and well-paying economy, weather, water, mountains.
dan_quixote··on Celsius Execs Cashed Out $40M in Crypto Before Halting Withdrawals for Customers
I don't feel like that's implied in the comment at all.
dan_quixote··on Lowest “Who is hiring?” Post Count in 30 Months
This is how it happens though. Some people are easy to convince with data alone, some are not, and others are simply in denial. Watch financial markets before a crash - lots of volatility while these groups are placing bets on the direction of the economy. Eventually we cross a threshold where the market crashes and all those that were unconvinced change their tune. It doesn't happen slowly.
dan_quixote··on Getty Images bans AI-generated content over fears of copyright claims
This question of copyright legalities and AI-generated media reminds me of the "Monkey selfie copyright dispute" from a few years back: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_selfie_copyright_disput...
dan_quixote··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
Because it's difficult. How do you solve for this problem in a house without internal ducting in temperature extremes throughout the year?
dan_quixote··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
What about constant stimuli fighting for our attention by exploiting our lizard-brain emotions every waking hour?
dan_quixote··on Ask HN: Have You Left Kubernetes?
I took it to mean "sandbox"
dan_quixote··on Tesla remotely converts battery pack, cutting 1/3 of range
And it was already a sunk cost for Tesla long before this became a story. Trying to recoup a few $thousand with such anti-consumer sentiment is bizarre.
dan_quixote··on Congress' push to regulate Big Tech is fizzling out
It scares me that we all seem to agree that the federal (and state to a lesser degree) government model is no longer going to solve major/existential societal problems. I don't mean the current government - a.k.a. set of legislators - I mean the model will continue to fail after subsequent elections. How many steps away is civil war or revolution?
dan_quixote··on Free Tiers and Resources for Developers
The venn diagram intersection of projects that "use so little resources that free tier is feasible" and "need kafka" has to be vanishingly small...
dan_quixote··on Fermented Chili “Open Sauce” – My most starred repo has no code in it
I've also had a similar experience peeling and crushing a massive amount of garlic by hand with no gloves. Not as bas as with chilis, but still caught me by surprise.
dan_quixote··on James Webb first images – complete set of high resolution shots now live
I'm not sure if NASA or the White House directed that stream. I've seen much better-organized streams from NASA. It wasn't just technically flawed. It was late, abrupt, disjointed and the talking points appeared to be delivered by people that had little knowledge in the matter. I can't believe I saw that level of disorganization from our highest executive office.
dan_quixote··on FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes
> Its weird to have companies say they're moving from Mainframes to the Cloud.

Ever work for a company with their own datacenters that were NOT cutting edge? The work to provision resources can be so painful that it severely inhibits prototyping. Being able to spin up resources in seconds with some API calls is very valuable.

dan_quixote··on Tech layoffs keep stacking up
Judging by the number of people living paycheck-to-paycheck, I think all it will take is a slight uptick in layoffs to light the fuse for another housing crash.
dan_quixote··on Meta slashes hiring plans, girds for 'fierce' headwinds
Yeah, we finally entered a phase where employees had some leverage and it quickly turned into an economic liability (high inflation). I'm more convinced that organized labor is the only answer as the years go by.
dan_quixote··on Unity employees ‘mad and stressed out’ amidst unexpected layoffs
Why not implement it with an improvement plan that restores the cut pegged to profit/revenue? You could even throw in a cash/stock bonus at some threshold and even a raise?
dan_quixote··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
>police, FBI, NSA, ICE, or EPA--should not have the ability to creatively interpret laws

That's simply not possible unless we have literal laws for every possible infraction - like a state machine for the human condition.

dan_quixote··on America needs supply-side reform
It's almost as though we've been warned for decades that tariffs are mostly harmful.

Time and time again we prove that R&D has a massive ROI, yet it's always being trimmed since it doesn't pay off in a short-enough time frame to keep the accountants happy (<6 months).

dan_quixote··on Webcams aren't good enough
You know what's vastly worse than a co-worker whose camera has a sub-optimal image quality? A co-worker who's constantly struggling to get their overkill setup to behave, wasting everyone's time while they fix the mix on their audio or switch cameras because their mirrorless camera turned itself off from thermal overload yet again.
dan_quixote··on Probiotics can support the effect of antidepressants
Thanks. This is the problem with unregulated supplements - internet strangers sharing recommendations is just about the best heuristic we've got!
dan_quixote··on Probiotics can support the effect of antidepressants
Mind sharing the brand/product?
