dan_can_code··on What's happening inside the NIH and NSF
The cynic in me thinks that the US is going to roll over and take this fascist shake down. The optimist in me thinks that the people will rise up with a resounding NO and do something about it. Right now I'm not sure which I believe.
dan_can_code··on Mineral Oil Cooled PC (2014)
I just had the funny thought of flushing my PC like a toilet.
dan_can_code··on Catastrophic tipping point in Greenland as blue lakes turn brown, belch out CO2
It's tough to feel positive for the future of humanity when events like this become more and more common. We're so screwed.
dan_can_code··on Ask HN: How do you automate file upload to GitHub?
I'm not sure if it's overkill but decapCMS [0] (formerly netlifyCMS) uses git for its publishing method to store static files and content. It's quite simple and open source, and might even just serve as good inspiration for your final solution.

dan_can_code··on Coronal mass ejection impact imminent, two more earth-directed CMEs
I would also like to know any practical answers to your question. My assumption is that there would be widespread panic, and I'm not sure how I would go about dealing with that other than waiting it out.
dan_can_code··on Deej: An open-source hardware volume mixer for Windows and Linux
Another HN project to add onto the neverending list! I am always having to tab out of Apex to adjust the mix with discord, every time I play. This is a really fun solution. Thank you for sharing.
dan_can_code··on Show HN: Jampack – Optimizes static websites as a post-processing step
This is great! Having to handle these tasks manually can be very tedious, so this tool is a breath of fresh air.
dan_can_code··on Why you should use a terminal editor to write a commit message
I do find value in your approach, but I'm just so used to the -m approach that I would hesitate to use another one. It helps me make sure to be brief and get to the point with the commit. The editor would give me too much freedom and I am likely to ramble!
dan_can_code··on I Improved My Rust Compile Times
JavaScript errors only occur at runtime. It's very common, especially in legacy codebases, for issues to just fly under the radar, even if they are obvious to the seasoned dev. There is a reason why one of the most popular JS books is called 'Javascript: the good parts'.

With rust, it's very refreshing in that it's idiot proof, which JavaScript is not. CSS is not relevant, since it is not actual programming.

dan_can_code··on I Improved My Rust Compile Times
I'm not sure if you're familiar with front-end developer tooling or the development process, but my editor will not tell me what error a browser is going to throw.
dan_can_code··on I Improved My Rust Compile Times
As a front-end developer dabbling with rust, the compiler being slow is not a problem for me. Whilst I appreciate the benchmark, it's not likely I'll have 72GB of ram laying around to speed up the process.

Yes, hot module reloading is nice and quick. But it reloads with errors included.

The primary benefit of the rust compiler, at least from my point of view, is telling me what's wrong, where. It's a worthwhile sacrifice for a few seconds of my time, when at the end of addressing all of the obvious errors, I have something that works. I find this miles better than HMR.

dan_can_code··on Meta AI releases Code Llama 70B
Yes, that is certainly a downside I forgot to mention. Sorry to get your hopes up.
dan_can_code··on Meta AI releases Code Llama 70B
How do you test a 70B model locally? I've tried to query, but the response is super slow.
dan_can_code··on Meta AI releases Code Llama 70B
It's great. It's super easy to install ollama locally, `ollama run <preferred model>`, change the continue config to point to it, and it just works. It even has an offline option by disabling telemetry.
dan_can_code··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas HN!

dan_can_code··on Overheating datacenter stopped 2.5M bank transactions
I wonder what the cost of a datacenter within Singapore is? The cost per sq/m in that country, which is the most expensive in the world, must be huge.
dan_can_code··on SlowLlama: Finetune llama2-70B and codellama on MacBook Air without quantization
Please excuse my ignorance, but what would be the use case of fine tuning? I'm quite interested in this application of it for hobby projects, but I'm not sure what value I would be able to gain.
dan_can_code··on Hacker News makes it to Dutch national media
I have only ever interacted with 1 person IRL who used HN, which lead to my using it. Other than that, no-one I know that works within tech uses it, so anecdotally I would say, HN is a relatively unknown community. I wouldn't say exclusive, as anyone can join.
dan_can_code··on Stability AI owns https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/
I think that's the point of this post, stability.ai have bought the domain and redirected it.
dan_can_code··on Flu and colds are back with a vengeance
Does it bother anyone else when large publications leave spelling mistakes or incomplete sentences in an article? It seems to be occuring more often. In this case, the first sentence of the subtitle: 'COVID-19 restrictions mean we are more susceptible these viruses'. Proof read just once, and you realise a word is missing.

I don't think having more than one thread is something to ban users for, they may not be aware.
dan_can_code··on Show HN: I wrote a book about using data science to solve “everyday” problems
Hi Andrew, thank you for sharing this. I am inspired by the book and the reasons why you wrote it. This will definitely help with not only trying to use your book as some form of self-help, but to remind myself that when you put your mind to something, you can achieve it. This is something I have been struggling with for the last year and for some reason your book and this comment has been a motivating factor. Thank you.
dan_can_code··on Ask HN: What are you planning to unlearn in 2021?
Biting my nails. It's been a stress response since I was a child and I'm sick of it.

Also, tunnel vision. If work becomes stressful, I find myself only able to focus on work, even outside of work hours. I have made it my goal to be more mindful of my stress levels, but also to make sure I don't forget about my responsibilities in my life.

dan_can_code··on Zuckerberg: Apple's ad-tracking block will impair Covid-19 economic recovery
He forgot to add:'for Facebook'. Tough luck Zuck. The ad industry has been a thorn in the side of modern life, I'm glad Apple are taking a stand.
dan_can_code··on Go modules have a v2+ problem
Thanks for sharing this with me. I didn't know this was a widely known phenomenon. I'll take a look at the link to help avoid having these blind spots myself, thanks again!
dan_can_code··on Go modules have a v2+ problem
I absolutely agree. There is no reason to settle for anything less. Google certainly has the resources to fill the gap - recognising it would be the first step. Looking at the Go documentation, it seems they have feedback mechanisms for the features of Go, but no means of providing feedback on the actual documentation. Rust however have both Github contributions, as well as a channel on discord specifically for documentation discussions. I would assume this may contribute to the lack of satisfactory documentation for Go.
