damontal··on How to stop advertisers from tracking your teen across the internet
I remember a teacher telling us that parents should not check their kids Google classroom accounts because it would be a violation of the other students’ privacy. I understand what they were saying but there’s no way I’m not checking my kid’s Google classroom account. Ridiculous.
damontal··on Swiss watchmakers put employees on state-funded leave as luxury demand disappear
Which is why I break out my G Shocks every once in a while. I get sick of seeing Apple watches everywhere. The problem is they’re so damned useful so I always come back to it.
damontal··on You've got to hide your myopia away: John Lennon's contact lenses
I’m in the same boat. If I put in contacts to correct my vision for distance I have to wear reading glasses to be able to see my phone or read a book.
damontal··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece (2023)
Seemed like more of a gimmick to me.

Many times it would say something like Rain stopping in 10 minutes. Then 8 minutes later… Rain stopping in 15 minutes. On and on as it steadily rained.

damontal··on Three years in North Korea as a foreigner (2021)
Nice victim blaming.
damontal··on The joy of reading books you don't understand
Started reading a book by Irish humorist Ross O’Carroll-Kelley.

It’s full of Dublin slang specific to the 90’s I think. I don’t understand a lot of it but it’s fascinating to sort of listen in on the patois.

Steroids before too. He speculated that the growth hormone actually triggered the cancer growth.
damontal··on I am sick of LeetCode-style interviews
Imagine what Franz Kafka could do with the Software Engineer interview process. It practically writes itself.
damontal··on Riven
The novels based on these games were really good. I think they are out of print unfortunately.
damontal··on Coding interviews are stupid (ish)
You can make millions as a famous actor in Hollywood. So what? That doesn’t describe the average actor’s situation.

I guess it depends on what you mean by “made”
damontal··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
By “wrong” you mean in disagreement with you? If not then what do you mean by half the population being “wrong”?

Well. No God that you agree with maybe.
damontal··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
Didn’t he try to order hits?
damontal··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
Either way you will certainly decline and eventually die.
damontal··on Nascar driver caught wearing an amphibious-like glove in a cheating violation
I remember reading that even in early Tours de France riders would surreptitiously jump into a car to get ahead in the race.
damontal··on Miles Davis and the recording of Kind of Blue
If you listen to that kind of jazz long enough you start hearing things. Patterns. References to other songs or standards in a solo. Two players interacting and having a kind of conversation with each other. I’ve listened to this album so many times I can play it in my mind.

If you’re really interested then listen to it enough so that it becomes somewhat familiar. You’ll be able to distinguish the structure from the improv and hear the interaction between the two. Bill Evans was a classical pianist. Maybe just focus on the piano and try to see what it’s doing in the song.

My Favorite Things by John Coltrane may be a better place to start though. It really emphasizes a familiar melody.

damontal··on Price fixing by algorithm is still price fixing
Sounds like they’re determining their own price with the technology that’s available.

damontal··on Getting fitter can reduce prostate cancer risk by 35%, study finds
Great book. But his recommendations are hard to follow.

40 minutes of zone 2 cardio at least 4 times a week plus zone 5 training once a week plus a strength training regimen plus mobility work.

I exercise about an hour 5-6 days a week and that isn’t enough to cover this regimen.

His recommendations make sense given that his most important indicator for longevity is exercise. But it’s a lot of time per day. Two hours some days if you really follow it.

damontal··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
I used to work in an open office and one guy had a light mounted to his cube. When it was red it meant do not disturb. Green meant he was available for whatever.
damontal··on Leave work slightly unfinished for easier flow the next day
This is how Hemingway wrote. He’d stop at a point where he knew what he wanted to write next so the following day he could pick right up where he left off.
damontal··on How to ripen and store avocados
My avocado pet peeve are the ones with long strands of fiber in them. Not sure why they develop or how to avoid them.
damontal··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
You may have colleagues or reports who you genuinely like and don't want to burn or over-stress by just leaving without warning. That's the way I see it. If I truly despised everyone I worked with I'd consider just leaving immediately if I had to opportunity, otherwise 2 weeks.

Also if you just leave it may be harder to get a decent reference from your colleagues for future jobs.

damontal··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
Too much effort? Takes me maybe 30 mins a week. Seems like very little effort in exchange for being on top of your finances.
damontal··on YouTube suspends Russell Brand from making money off the streaming site
What do you mean by “required “? Franken voluntary resigned to hold himself to the same standards he’d hold others to. He could have fought calls for his resignation but didn’t.
damontal··on New JFK assassination revelation could upend the lone gunman theory
The movement of his head has led some to suggest there was a shooter in the sewer that the car passed.
damontal··on Threads users down by more than a half
>He already has?

What’s the point of the question mark there? Are you not sure of your statement?

damontal··on X, the moonshot factory
I thought moon shot was in reference to the rescue effort for Apollo 13.
