damnitbuilds··on What to Do as the World Falls Apart: A Framework for Action
"We are in week ten of a war that has reduced the flow of hydrocarbons from the Strait of Hormuz to the rest of the world – or more accurately to the U.S., Israel, and their allies"

India and China are not our allies.

The fight against global warming deserves better advocates.

damnitbuilds··on Am I too pessimistic about Python's future?
The Python 2/3 disaster is not even over yet - I had to deal with a Python 2 problem TODAY.

There can be no Python 4.

damnitbuilds··on Can we have a feature to hide post karma?
Of course, some ignoramus downvoted this rather than commenting on it.

Fuck you, you're making HN worse.

damnitbuilds··on Why the failure of Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket is so catastrophic
I wonder if there will be any lessons here for the benefits of Spacex's Incremental "Build, test, fail, improve and increment, repeat" approach vs Blue Origin and Old Space's Monolithic "Design it all, build it all, debug it all" approach ?

Just hoping it wasn't a single flipping COPV failure...

damnitbuilds··on Can we have a feature to hide post karma?
Can we have a feature to require a reason for downvoting, and "Fact I don't like" not being permitted as a reason ?
damnitbuilds··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
To be relevant to this discussion, models running on reasonably-priced local hardware do not have to be as good as the best.

They just have to be useful enough that companies don't need the best.

They are.

damnitbuilds··on After Ferrari EV backlash, Lamborghini says canceling EVs was the right choice
My impression (based on the social media comments I've seen) is that GenZ'ers dislike the (Il?) Luce as much as everyone else and the only guys who like it are older men trying to be edgy.
damnitbuilds··on Ferrari's electric car: divisiveness is the point
A lame post-hoc defense.

The point for the Ferrari company is to make money. This car will not help Ferrari do that.

Ferrari went with Ives not to divide people but because he is a very well-known (mobile phone) designer. Unfortunately they have now discovered that he is not a good (car) designer.

"The future tends to work better when it still recognizes what made the past worth following."

Designers - and architects - take very good note.

damnitbuilds··on After Ferrari EV backlash, Lamborghini says canceling EVs was the right choice
The problem is not, as demented petrol heads want you to believe, that Ferrari made an EV.

The problem is that Ferrari got a retired phone designer to design an EV and it ignored Ferrari's history and is Effing UGLY.

Many, many people were excited by the prospect of Ferrari legitimizing EVs for a certain audience.

Ferrari, and Ives, failed us all.

Designers and architects need to learn that THIS PRODUCT IS NOT ABOUT YOU.

I hope that Ferrari try again. And that Ives apologizes.

damnitbuilds··on Has academia become institutionally narcissistic?
Penultimate "their" -> "there".

What's the law that says that every comment concerning education will contain at least one spelling mitsake ?

damnitbuilds··on All of human cooking compressed into 2 megabytes
I'd prefer it if you minimized the crossing paths :-)
damnitbuilds··on Didgeridoo playing as alternative treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (2006)

damnitbuilds··on Has academia become institutionally narcissistic?
When you know how your professor votes or you have been told their views on controversial current political issues or what they think of the president, they have FAILED and should lose their job.

Professors are their to teach their subject, not indoctrinate students.

damnitbuilds··on The electric Ferrari is here and it's fugly [video]
So they fucked up the front just so that the back and the front would look the same from a certain angle.

What originality, what innovation, what a stupid stupid stupid way to design a car.

Ive, you failed.

damnitbuilds··on The electric Ferrari is here and it's fugly [video]
That front is just abominable. Fiat Multipla awful.

Looks like $20,000, costs $450,000

Still, nice to see Johnny Ive finally learnt that buttons are useful.

damnitbuilds··on What is pending for SpaceX Starship to be a Moonship for NASA astronauts?
This is a lie:

"Starship’s early developmental challenges meant that target whizzed by."

This article is not to be trusted.

My call:

It will be too much work to man-rate Starship in time and the landing will be done by a Blue Origin lander. Starship will bring it to the moon and back, along with an Orion for the launch and reentry.

damnitbuilds··on Berkeley toddler who inspired 'Go the Fuck to Sleep' is now off to college

Eeeuw.

damnitbuilds··on Didgeridoo playing as alternative treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (2006)
I played with my didgeridoo 3 times a day for ten years and it cured my snoring. But I went blind.
damnitbuilds··on Cheap AI Could Derail OpenAI and Anthropic's IPOs
This explains it ( not sure about the diagram though ):

damnitbuilds··on AI is just unauthorised plagiarism at a bigger scale
He misuses the term "AI", undermining his point and suggesting he doesn't really understand it.
damnitbuilds··on Cheap AI Could Derail OpenAI and Anthropic's IPOs
I only did coding with a MoE model, one prompt at a time, which maxed out my GPU.
damnitbuilds··on Why Most Senior Devs Plateau, and What to Do
Why, beyond the pay rise, would you spend your whole professional life getting better at being an engineer only to throw it all away to become a middle manager ?!
damnitbuilds··on Cheap AI Could Derail OpenAI and Anthropic's IPOs
Working on it !

Well, other people are working on it, I'm just trying to get what they do running on my system.

MTP looks good at the moment.

damnitbuilds··on Cheap AI Could Derail OpenAI and Anthropic's IPOs
I just ran a local Qwen 3.6 on cheap local hardware ( 12GB VRAM ) and it performed BETTER ( okay, 10x slower, but acceptable ) than Copilot.

Big AI is DEAD.

damnitbuilds··on Steve Wozniak cheered after telling students they have AI – actual intelligence
Just a reminder that going to Israel to rape, mame and kidnap babies, children and old people, then spitting on the corpses of the people your human animals bring back in their trucks means you give up the right to any whining defense of "Oh, oh, they attacked us and bombed the shit out of our child-murdering asses".

Live by the terrorist state of Hamas, die by the army of the Israeli democracy. Israel, where women, gays, arabs, christians, jews, atheists live side by side. And have the same rights as straight men.

Open your eyes, you stupid bastards, to what Hamas has made Gaza into.

damnitbuilds··on Ask HN: Is the next big thing locally running coding agents?
I tweaked it and now I get good, better-than-Copilot answers, on local hardware but a little bit slower than Copilot ( okay, ~10min vs ~1 minute ).

I can take that for the joy of running this locally !

damnitbuilds··on Ask HN: Is the next big thing locally running coding agents?
I got Qwen 3.6 running locally on 12GB VRAM.

It went:

AI: "I see you are building a Django project. How can I help?"

Me: "When I click on the Reload button, it does not set the reload option correctly. Fix this"

     <10 minutes>

AI: "I see you are building a Django project. How can I help?"
Needs more tweaking of the context window, I think.

Seriously, I agree that this is the future, when OpenAI et al have gone bust.

damnitbuilds··on Anna's Archive hit with $19.5M default judgment and global domain takedown order
Given they already have a $322 million judgment and takedown order, they only need to worry 6% more.

Until copyright terms are fair, ~5 years not ~95 years, Pirate On !
