damiankennedy··on Boeing plea deal over fatal 737 MAX crashes rejected by judge
How much can the US federal government fine a company like Boeing? 30 trillion would be nice. Or perhaps a federal level registration fee that covers safety/quality checks and costs 50 million per plane?
damiankennedy··on Bill Atkinson doxxed Douglas Adams in 1987
Some phones had a slot where you could insert made to fit cards with common numbers.
damiankennedy··on The Economy Is Going Great, Except for the Housing Market
How long do US people typically fix their mortgage? Are there many people that will refinance their home and have to pay a higher rate or does this just happen if you move house? Can refinancing be avoided if you just move house and transfer the debt to the new property but keep the same rate? In New Zealand you can fix for 6 months, 1 year, 18 months, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years with 2/3 being most common but recently 6 months to 1 year becoming popular due to the expectation that rates will fall. The flip side to that is a lot of people on a historically low < 3% 3 year mortgage had to take a 6%-7% mortgage so a lot of money gets taken out of their pockets and the economy.

Do you think it will get as high as %50 per month or something like %25 a year and would this inflation have any effect on future US Federal liabilities?

They're not using an automated ad service of any kind they have manually put these ads in the source code of their web page. We all see the same ads.

I prefer it, these ads mean something to the people that run the site, they put some effort into putting them there and presumably purchasing the products benefits the organisation in some way.

They also have a no AI disclaimer at the top.

damiankennedy··on Nuclear reactors a mile underground promise safe, cheap power
As a New Zealander born in the 70s I very much remember Greenpeace protesting against the testing of the nuclear weapons, the snap election in 1984, the 1985 bombing of the Rainbow Warrior and then becoming nuclear free in 1987. Nuclear power was never going to get of the ground in that environment. In NZ, being nuclear free is like the 2nd amendment in the US.

How much power would such a device need to be detected above background radiation? Would a power source for it last long enough to improve the odds significantly?
damiankennedy··on What purpose did the lower-right Enter key serve on original Mac 128k keyboard?
I grew up with a 6128 keyboard (the keyboard was ackshually the computer) which had separate Enter and Return keys. It also had a "Copy" key. The keyboard I use today has a key to change the colour of the LEDs. If I press it accidentally I have to press it 7 more times to cycle around to match the mouse which has its own button and the same 8 colours.

"First and most important, this is in no way a reflection on the quality of the work from the mission team that are working to build this rover," said Nicola Fox, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate. "They have worked diligently, including through the pandemic, to be able to build this rover to look for water on the moon."

...

"Funding for the agency's science programs as a whole was reduced by $1 billion for 2025, Fox said today."

damiankennedy··on United Airlines Jet Loses Wheel in Repeat of March Incident
When a plane reaches V1 (which depends on the model, weight, runway length, temperature etc) the pilot has 2 seconds to abort takeoff or they are too fast to stop before the end of the runway. At V1 a multi-engine plane will take-off even with one engine out. The pilot will normally wait until Vr or V2 to rotate as this ensures a climb rate of 2.4 degrees. If the runway is long enough V1 will be higher than V2 but commercial aircraft will de-rate the engines and make use of the available runway to avoid running the engines at maximum.

The first thing you need to go with a series like this is prove that it converges. Then you can take a series that is already known to converge to pi. The choice of series will mean the difference between the proof being very hard and practically impossible. Then change that series to give 32/pi^3 instead of pi. Then deduct a mapping between groups of n in one series and groups of n in the other series.

damiankennedy··on Cross My Heart – A Frogger Demake in 256 Bytes of HTML/JS
You can replace the two " with ` so that the code in setInterval is still treated as a string.

Also, see the section:

q?'♥':Y=1

The code is minimized by setting Y back to 1 instead of providing a character to display but this has the visual side effect of "squashing" the player when they are run over.

For extra fun, remove the "uncompressed" onkeydown added at the end, then you can hold down the spacebar to do big jumps.
damiankennedy··on Cross My Heart – A Frogger Demake in 256 Bytes of HTML/JS
Same with the </canvas> tag. Are these closing tags needed for some "reason"? I suspect the second (and third) line is included by mistake. Also, if we are counting bytes, the closing pre tag is required and should be counted. The game also relies on filtering out non-arrow key presses but this code isn't compressed or counted at all. The instruction "Do not press any other keys" seems superfluous with the extra onkeydown code added.

Why was this code and a lot of similar code posted to github only 2 hours ago?
