dambi0··on Against Best Practices
I’m a bit confused with the analogy here. Would the non NEMA outlets work with my existing things or is the implication that they wouldn’t?
dambi0··on I've had a change of heart regarding employee metrics
I agree. It is always commendable to face the realisation that our previously held actions or opinions are limited. Even more so to do so publicly with the hope the experience can help someone else.

On the other hand, we are told that these previous actions were actively harmful. Perhaps given this some degree of apology to those that might have been impacted would be in order.

The final sentence of the article is quite illuminating. I wonder whether that would have changed were the metrics useful in identifying relative work performance.

It's a courageous and commendable article either way.

dambi0··on Colorado scrambles to change voting-system passwords after accidental leak
I was mostly thinking people in coercive relationships.

But in terms of communities it might be that voting is looked down upon for certain members of that community not the community as a whole.

In broader terms while marking people who have voted may not reveal who they voted for it does reveal that they did vote. This is less private than the election authorities maintaining the record of who has voted.

dambi0··on Colorado scrambles to change voting-system passwords after accidental leak
It’s only fun if you want people to know you voted. Not everyone does.

I’m not sure what problem that solves that crossing voters of a list doesn’t already solve. What about mail in and early voting?
dambi0··on Category Theory Illustrated: Logic (2021)
Determining whether something is useful because it’s the only way that a problem can be solved is quite a high bar.

We could say the same about computers in general.

Admittedly even with a less stringent criteria I don’t have any examples. So I understand your point

dambi0··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
Some of my experience of exams comes from a history degree where around eighty to ninety percent of the overall grade came from final exams. I can only speak of my experience but I don’t think this is atypical depending on educational system.

One of the reasons I mentioned the viva was an example of how we can decouple production of some work from an assessment of quality and some reason to believe that some candidate is capable of the work without assistance.

It would be unreasonable to spend five or so years working under examination conditions. But that doesn’t mean we can’t subsequently examine a candidate to determine likely authorship amongst other things.

dambi0··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
That depends on the questions. There are also open book exams. A viva is a type of exam so I don’t see they are incompatible with assessing research
dambi0··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
An essay written under examination conditions is fine. We don’t need new assessment techniques. We have known how to asses that a student and that student alone for centuries.

I presume running a national rail system is somewhat different from a railway for a single city. How good are the national rail systems in these countries?
dambi0··on Scale Ruins Everything
Isn’t the entire point of Chesterton’s fence to consider things ex post facto? How would you explain places that have regulations for taxis but not artificial scarcity? I don’t think the collusion argument is simpler at all. That is not to say it doesn’t explain the situation in certain places of course.
dambi0··on Choosing solitude
In what proportion of those marriages did the partner not initiating the divorce want the marriage to continue? Because without knowing that, this just tells is who more likely to act first.

Also, I can see the use of commutative encryption for the time capsule support but I’m not seeing where homomorphic encryption fits in.

dambi0··on Hacker plants false memories in ChatGPT to steal user data in perpetuity
If an official comes to my door with an identity card I can presumably verify who the person is (although often the advice is to phone the organisation and check if unsure) but I don’t necessarily believe everything they tell me
dambi0··on Foundations: Why Britain Has Stagnated
The article is fairly misleading. Despite claims to the contrary the list of facts is nothing more than "disconnected observations". They lack any serious context or nuance. For every single one it's possible to ask whether the observation is a fair comparison or something that should be the case. Take the number of second homes relative to France. Is more second homes a good thing? Take electricity production, might we not argue that the UK uses energy more efficiently rather than lagging what other countries generate?

dambi0··on Oxford commercializes its 20% more powerful solar panels in the US
Interesting thanks. So could you have a panel that is slightly more efficient in energy capture than the current best alternative but uses 20% less panel area? I’m entirely unfamiliar with how testing is performed
dambi0··on Oxford commercializes its 20% more powerful solar panels in the US
It’s one measure of their efficiency. We could also talk about their cost efficiency or their area efficiency.
dambi0··on Oxford commercializes its 20% more powerful solar panels in the US
They claim the panels produce 20% more energy not that they are 20% more efficient.

dambi0··on "Authentic" is dead. And so is "is dead."
Is the first more fallible because it’s quantified? Otherwise isn’t it easier to falsify a “powerful security feature” as it could be neither powerful or security related. Whereas a “bad” request is much less specific and thus harder to disprove?
