I think the Robo Taxi revealed last month on 8/8 really assuaged fears about this. It’s totally not vaporware.

It's good that Tesla is explicitly stating FSD requires supervision, and my impression is that the FSD purchase page has implied a driver may need to intervene since 2017 or 2018.

FSD has gotten significantly better too, which I imagine is why they need to be more precise with what it can and cannot do.

Also, FSD started at $8k. IIRC, it went up to $15k after the pandemic.

That’s good because they were totally unreasonable promises. I’m surprised nobody sued for false advertising. People paid a lot of money for something that has never lived up to the hype.

Said it before, will doubtless say it many times again... Level 5 self-driving isn't coming until with have AGI.

There are sufficient technologies to create level 4 urban and level 2 interstate driving that cover most miles driven by most people on a daily basis.

AGI isn’t required for this. Really good SLAM is.

My guess; the same way they handle every unexpected situation --- slam on the brakes.

The most common accident with self driving vehicles is rear end collisions --- which always gets classified as the human driver's fault.

I checked this out [1] just to get a sense, and apparently there have been 200 total collisions involving Waymos, about one every 100,000 miles. 43% were at relative speeds of under 1 MPH. Only 23 were serious enough to cause an injury or deploy airbags, and of those, 16 were rear-end crashes. At least one of the 16 involved a driver who hit the Waymo a second time as he tried to run away, so probably not good faith. Anyway: might be that Waymos hit the brakes a lot, but does not seem like an epidemic of fast "slam on the brakes" rear-end collisions.

I think the real reason why tesla will never give people the option to buy one of their cars without self driving hardware is because the market would reveal its actual demand and value

Tesla's do fully drive themselves. They are FSD.

Now, there being an "official", legally-protected definition for that is another thing.

Level 5 self-driving vehicles won't even have controls for humans.

But again, Tesla's are already fully self-driving.

The only issue with Tesla is that sometimes they fully self drive themselves into other cars or static objects. But rest be assured they are Fully self driving.

The official and legal requirement is not important. The only important thing is what Tesla’s marketing team says about its own features(I.e FSD).

If I think a bit about this I think I could make an unofficial FSD system as well.

By your definition, so is my Honda with a brick on the accelerator: it fully drives itself until it hits a wall.

Mostly the "self" part. Teslas cannot drive themselves. They need a human driver supervising, ready to take over at a moment's notice.

If something needs a driver, it is not self-driving in my book.
