dalys··on Sweden becomes the first country to reject low-fat diet dogma
To be fair, you probably know how carbohydrate works in your body and why you need them when you exercise, etc. The problem is, most people don't have a clue and are not really interested in knowing, and most people are not going to start exercise ever. I eat 300-500g of carbs after the gym as well, but at the same time my recommendation for anyone that doesn't go the gym (and is rather sedentary) would be to cut most of the carbs.

I was just impressed by how the colors of the buttons in the top left corner (when idling at the section with the video background) is synchronized with the color theme of the video background.
dalys··on The Coral Content Distribution Network
For some reason the DNS servers my Swedish ISP provides seems to ignore/block all lookups for anything containing nyud.net. I have never encountered anything at all being blocked before with my ISP, so it seems a bit strange. Too bad if other ISPs also are blocking CoralCDN. I tried Googles DNS server (8.8.8.8) and everything works fine with that.
dalys··on Quinoa should be taking over the world. This is why it isn’t
Unfortunately WolframAlpha is a little off on this one. It shows data for cooked quinoa which is very misguiding.

The "correct" macronutrient values with some comparisons:

Quinoa: 368kcal / Protein 14g / Fat 6g / Carbs 64g

Oats: 379/13/6/67

Regular pasta: 360/12/1/72

Couscous: 361/13/1/72

"Quinoa is a low-calorie, gluten-free, high-protein grain that tastes great." says the author.

It's low-calorie compared to butter maybe, and high-protein compared with a cucumber. But compared with the usual suspect of dinner alternatives like pasta or couscous it's just the same. Just by looking at the macros, there's no need to buy quinoa, especially if it's more expensive than other options. This is of course disregarding that it's gluten free and not looking at the micronutrients.
dalys··on Opera 15 Preview for Windows and Mac with Chromium Engine Released
I just tried the Peacekeeper benchmark from Futuremark (http://peacekeeper.futuremark.com/) on both Chrome and Opera Next on Windows 8 x64.

dalys··on Show HN: Chrome Extension for the one thing I miss on HN
That's true. I wish I would've come up with a more describing title. Spent a couple of minutes trying to compress what I wanted to convey in a couple of words and this was the result.
dalys··on Show HN: Chrome Extension for the one thing I miss on HN
Thanks! I suspect this would be somthing others miss as well. I've thought about the comments too and I will have to come up with a good simple indicator for those as well I think. The feature creep begins... :)
dalys··on Association between muscular strength and mortality in men (2008) [pdf]
I'd like to point out that when looking only at persons aged <60 OR persons with a BMI >25, the strongest (upper) third group did NOT have the lowest death rate in this study. Instead it was the "middle" group in both cases. Admittedly with not much of a difference from the upper group. And again, this study did not claim causation between strength and mortality, but association.

Although if we just play with the thought and assume a causation between strength and mortality and if you are under 60 years of age or have a BMI over 25 and you want to minimize your mortality rate, your one-repetition maximum (1RM) strength goals in a lifting weight / body weight ratio would be x:

  Bench press: 0.7 < x < 1.1
  Leg press: 1.4 < x < 1.9

dalys··on A $1 billion idea...that I know I'm not ready for
This pretty much exists in at least Sweden. Check out http://www.prisjakt.nu/ ( translated to english http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=sv&tl=en&js... ). You said something like this would take 10 years to build and Prisjakt actually started 10 years ago. :-) They don't index everything of course but probably covers 99% of everything tech related and have been expanding in to new product segments all the time. Except the web site they of course do have phone apps which let you search for a product and then choose to display all the stores around you that carry that product and to what price and if they have it in stock. If you have a Swedish store selling anything online (or offline more and more) you "have" to exists on Prisjakt and have your full inventory with prices and stock status supplied to them. If you are among the cheapest stores on a popular product this of course will get you a lot of traffic. But there are more layers than just price indexing. They do have ratings and comments for all products and all stores. Myself personally would never buy anything from a store with bad reviews on Prisjakt, be it online or offline.

I would guess they started back in the days just scraping web sites on their own and then gradually got stores to supply them with "price files" that contained everything they needed. I know they have deals with create-your-own-web-shop businesses like Shopify and others so that these businesses create the price files automagically for every store THEY have.

As for revenue I believe that a store has to pay Prisjakt to actually have Prisjakt put up a clickable link to their web site. So if I search for Samsung Galaxy S III and go to the product page, I am presented with an array of stores carrying that phone, and I can click to go immediately to the stores own product page for Samsung Galaxy S III and go through with my purchase. If you don't pay it seems your website url is more hidden (on the store profile page) it's not clickable even their. You can also pay extra for having your logotype visible etc. They probably have a lot more going on as well.

2010 Prisjakt had $7.6M in revenue and made a $3.36M profit.

dalys··on Visualising weather reports as a graph
I also like yr.no and the hour by hour view it provides. As many other Swedes I use it every day. A plus for yr.no is all the free data that is available! Probably the best weather site there is, if you're in a northern Europe country at least. http://om.yr.no/verdata/free-weather-data/
dalys··on Hulu Commercial Auto-Muter
A friend of mine build the same thing for Spotify called mutify, but Spotify released an update within a couple of weeks just making the advertisements pause whenever your audio is muted. The Spotify client will also pause the ad if the audio level in Spotify is below ~30%. Hulu will have a harder time though since it's web based (right?). Nice hack anyway. :)

dalys··on How to hack yourself a standing desk - an illustrated guide
I just wanted to share my standing "desk" and experiences too. A picture of my home setup: http://i.imgur.com/BUUTP.jpg

The furniture is a piece of IKEA MALM. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70053924

The keyboard height isn't 100% optimal for my height though and it would be nice to have the monitor 1-2dm further back. Other than that, feels great when you have adjusted to standing up.

+ You can really feel your back muscles growing and getting stronger after a few weaks (at least if unexcercised before).

+ Now I can walk around from when I wake up to when I go to sleep without getting any aches. (Good for when you're shopping, touristing, hiking, going to conventions, conferences etc.)

+ My body posture is now way better, standing or sitting down.

- When I sit down and need to think a bit and look away from the computer that's what I do. When I'm standing up I find myself walking around aimlessly instead, and suddenly I'm in the kitchen grabbing something to eat. I would say my concentration is better when sitting down.

dalys··on Ask HN: What are your best life hacks?
I never put a really big task on my todo list. Instead of having "Write 500 page report about XYZ" on your todo, break it down to smaller jobs, but not too small. So instead, write down "look on wikipedia about xyz for 60 minutes", "open up Word, come up with a first draft title, and write down the chapters needed". Makes it A LOT easier to get started on something! If the task is too big I, and many others I suspect, just procrastinate. You end up with half a day gone just thinking about how hard and big the project is, instead of just opening Word and writing down a title, which is better than nothing.

dalys··on Ask HN: Cost of living across the world (Ramen PPP Index for hackers)
Göteborg, Sweden

This is monthly expenses in euro. 1 EUR = ~1.4 USD . Rent: Sweden is rent controlled. Expect €200-500 for 1 BR apartment in a large city depending on if you live on the outskirts or right downtown. The problem is the queues. If you want to live very central you can stand in line for many many years. Around €100-300 per month if you own a condo and only pay the condo association fee. Around €150-200k to buy a 1 BR very central condo.

Electricity: Around 10 euro cents per kWh.

Internet: €30-40 for 100/10Mbps cable or 100/100Mbps FTTH(whatever is available) or ADSL (24/3Mbps) if you live in a house. I get 100/10Mbps for free and 100/100Mbps for €20 extra per month.

Phone: €10 if you make a few calls and send a few SMS per day, I pay €6 for flatrate 1Mbps data per month. €15 for 6Mbps flatrate and €20 for 10Mbps. (I'm writing this message riding a train with my laptop and cell phone in tethering harmony)

Food: €150 I make my own food to 99% and don't buy much meat. Double it if you eat like a regular person. :) A lunch is €6 for kebab/McD and stuff like that, €10+ on restaurant. Expect €30 per person to eat dinner and drink wine/beer on a nice restaurant.

Beer/Alcohol: Expensive! €1.5 for 50cl beer of the cheapest kind in the state owned alcohol monopoly store. In clubs/bars it's around €5 for ~40cl beer. €10 for 4cl shots.

Ramen: 20 euro cents for a package of noodle (80gr). You can buy 500gr of pasta for €0.5-1.

Transport: €2 per ride on the tram with SMS ticket (How many rides you want within 90min). I take 5-10 rides per month and walk every where I need to go otherwise.

Shopping: iPad €550. Xbox 360 slim 250GB €230. Clothes are europy-pricey I guess...

Insurances: The only one you need to have is home insurance. Mine is €10 per month.

Wages: Around €2500-3000/month for entry level programmers with a uni./college degree.

I don't know if I've forgot something important but my living expenses are around €500 per month total.
