dalemhurley··on Show HN: Thoreau BASIC – What if BASIC hadn't gone out of fashion?
So much easier then JavaScript/typescript, Python, and many other languages.
dalemhurley··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
In Australia, my kids are using Google Classroom and Pages as chat apps.
dalemhurley··on Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos
I had Sol 5.6 about a month ago populated a test account, take screen shots, write a script, used ElevenLabs TTS, with Remotion. It did an amazing job.
dalemhurley··on Early rogue AI agent activity and attempts to hack found on urlquery.net
Surely there has to be some responsibility.
dalemhurley··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
When I was a graduate 20 years ago, the partner would sit with a print out of every word I wrote and a red pen marking every change required, as the partner knew anything that was written in his name had to be exactly what he would have said.

Same needs to go for LLMs, leverage them for productivity both make sure you are owning their output.

Same thought I had.

Sovereign AI is going to be the next frontier. It’s apparent that all nations need to prepare themselves for possible challenges from foreign hyperscalers facing laws that are being rushed through to alleviate fear caused by fear mongers.
dalemhurley··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
Strange. I had an app the other day approved in hours on Google 15 days on Apple.
dalemhurley··on Dramatic insider warnings over AI fall flat with some in Silicon Valley
Yep
dalemhurley··on Dramatic insider warnings over AI fall flat with some in Silicon Valley
An intern who was there barely a minute, who has said nothing of substance. Surely we can get a better source with concrete evidence rather than the vibes of junior burger.
dalemhurley··on Dramatic insider warnings over AI fall flat with some in Silicon Valley
I agree with the host of the All In podcast, often I don’t. This is about creating a moat that open source models cannot compete with, regulation.

It is purely ensuring only a few providers can compete.

The future is edge and open source models.

Both Apple and Google are working towards this.

Cloud AI will be for offloading when the edge is not capable.

Most cases edge will be suffice.

Further inference costs keep coming down.

Vertical integration might be the biggest challenge of the AI industry. Trying to manage electricity generation, training, inference, harness and end user for enterprise and consumer is a lot of moving parts.

dalemhurley··on My Feed, My Way
Maybe read the bill first before commenting.
dalemhurley··on GPT-6 Astra
OpenAI is killing it now that they are more focused. Killing projects like Sora et al have seen it go from irrelevant to level footing with Anthropic.

Sol is so much better than Fable 5. Then we get Astra (yet to use it) few days after Fable 5.1 (which is very impressive).

Codex is slightly better than Claude Code.

Good on Sam Altman getting back to basics and turning OpenAI around.

dalemhurley··on Python Polars Cheatsheet (based on our O'Reilly book)
Why do Python users use acronyms instead of verbose variable names?
dalemhurley··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative

dalemhurley··on HTML over WebSockets: real-time SPAs with barely any JavaScript
We have come full circle.
dalemhurley··on Show HN: Needle2: 14MB agentic LLM for phones, wearables, smart home and robots
agreed, this is where we have the biggest opportunity for innovation.
dalemhurley··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
People with dyslexia and dystrophia, commonly use LLMs to proofread content. Even Anthropic admits this is a limitation.
dalemhurley··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
I don't see anything unique nor novel to what everyone has been doing since GPT-3.5, before OpenAI introduced function calling, I was building my own JSON and tool calling.
dalemhurley··on Saying No
thank you

Hollow victory.

The landlord was probably trying to squeeze some small margin by leasing unoccupied hours. The loss of occupancy is probably a small rounding error.

The yoga group now without a space. A major loss for them.

dalemhurley··on Saying No
I remember an executive who was like this person. They had a private office and it was a little cold so they brought in a space heater. That sent the thermostat off, suddenly the whole office became ice cold. He would not listen to anyone’s else pleas because his comfort was more important. People from building maintenance would put up signs and he would rip them down. Some people’s idea of negotiating is just forcing peoples hand until they have no choice but to terminate the relationship. We were also kicked out of the building.

It is a strange post.

He missed the opportunity to work with the other side to find a mutually beneficial solution.

Now they have no studio and the other side have their aircon exactly how they like it.

This should be a lesson in cutting off your nose despite your face.

There is economic benefits of the cost per a lumen continuously coming down.
dalemhurley··on Australia's social media ban has failed
Did you ever hear of anti smoking laws? They took decades but have been extremely effective in Australia.
dalemhurley··on Australia's social media ban has failed
So we should just allowed big tech to do whatever they want because they can?
dalemhurley··on Australia's social media ban has failed
You’re probably too young to remember when anti smoking laws were introduced to Australia. It took decades to change behaviours and attitudes. The cigarette industry did everything in their powers to undermine the laws. The social media giants are playing the same game.
dalemhurley··on Australia's social media ban has failed
The smoking laws took a long time to break through, this is the same.
dalemhurley··on Australia's social media ban has failed
Exactly. This is a propaganda piece from the social media platforms
