daft_pink··on Show HN: A Claude Code skill to analyze your chess games
doesn't using vision instead of notation burn tokens?
daft_pink··on Best LLM for every budget, updated daily
I would really like something similar for local ai where the x axis is vram.
daft_pink··on Jev Can't Be Calibrated
I'm really looking for a multi-modal image capable version of Jev.

If we could get machine learning type results on images without training, that would be fantastic.

daft_pink··on Keys Not Included: recovering the signing keys for US driver's license barcodes
Maybe we should create petitions for each of the 31 states covered by IDEMIA and all the states covered by Canadian Bank Note to add this to the ID cards.

I can't imagine Illinois, where I live that I believe uses IDEMIA from what I know about the Apple Wallet rollout wouldn't want to add this.

daft_pink··on NHTSA Orders Tesla to Provide Answers on Cybercab Certification
Government wants Tesla to explain how it self-certified the Cybercab as complying with federal safety standards even though it has no steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal.
daft_pink··on Devastated father says his 9-year-old son spent $118,000 on YouTube ads
Pretty crazy. We use Ramp at work and it allows you to specifically set budgets for every single credit card and get approvals, etc. This should be an advertisement for them.

Hope they setup a go fund me as I would be happy to contribute $20 towards paying the $'s back.

daft_pink··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
after the kaepernick nonsense, i started buying lululemon clothes and hoka shoes and never bought another nike product ever again.
daft_pink··on Why is privacy so hard? (2019)
Because there are numerous choke points where people need to use devices to do a thing and those devices can record you and the financial incentives for the companies that own these choke points is so great that they end up selling your data.

Even if Apple truly had perfect privacy you still need to use credit cards, bank accounts, insurance, cell towers, drive a car, etc.

I think that’s the underlying reason why privacy is so hard.

daft_pink··on AI is not a normal technology
I think what you are missing is that it will dramatically lower the cost of living so that everyone’s standard of living increases. It’s not about jobs.
daft_pink··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
so glad i use kagi
daft_pink··on Will there be a 7G?
there will obviously be a 7g, the real question is whether carriers would adopt it.
daft_pink··on Killing with a car costs $1.6M, California requires drivers to carry $30K
i'm not sure that the minimum should be 1.6M, but it should be more than $30k, when the average vehicle is well above that.
daft_pink··on Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
if I just randomly asked claude how to build a bioweapon would it flag it and then they would claim they stopped it in a press release, even though i have no ability to actually build something like that?
daft_pink··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
makes sense. cursor is a real competitor to openai. we're completely switching to grok bot at work after going from claude code >> codex >> grok bot.
daft_pink··on Identifying fake cosmetics using AI
i really would love to see an app we could use to detect these?

my wife bought some cosmetics from amazon that turned out to be counterfeit and the only reason we knew it was because we had previously purchased the correct item from sephora and the bottle was quite different.

i tried to complain to the brand and amazon, but no one really cared and they gave me a refund and kept on selling.

it would be really awesome if there was a way for companies to upload high quality imagery of legit products and they could be used by ai engines to identify fakes.

daft_pink··on Trade (and Tariffs)
i'm a little bit confused by the current news. I thought the supreme court said the tariffs are illegal without congressional approval and the government started refunding the money.

now the news is full of all these tarriffs about canada?

What's the factual non-partisan reasoning by which trump has been found not to have the power to create tarriffs, but is still doing it with canada?

daft_pink··on Needle: The benchmark your search engine can't memorize
so is this an independent search engine benchmark or a blog post from a search engine provider showing their search engine at the top of the benchmark?

i'm a little bit confused as at first when I was reading it i thought it was a search engine benchmark, but it seems that keenable is at the top which i assume is related to the web domain owner? i've never heard of keeenable

daft_pink··on [dead]
I would just mention that your summary of the poster's comment omits the central issue, whether their conduct includes criminal terrorist acts. They aren't being designated as a terrorist group because of the cause or the solely from the actions of a random protestor. They are being designated as a terrorist group because their leaders promoted and encouraged and planned criminally violent behavior. Whether the the majority of actual street level protestors are the same and easily switch from cause to cause isn't really relevant to this analysis.

I would suggest that the OP is suggesting that because the terrorist organization supports palestine and engages in these activities, the label is more controversial than other organizations such as irish unification, communist revolution, drug cartels, white supremacy or neo-nazism organizations that are also labeled as terrorist groups without much controversy.

daft_pink··on Anthropic Sees over $30T in Potential Revenue
What will inflation have to be for us to reach that?
daft_pink··on Starbase, LA
A quick ctrl f for Gulf of America yield no results. Just curious lol.
daft_pink··on Fastmail offers EU data region
Actually thrilled that I can choose US data residency. Apparently, it was always that way? Happy that I can choose it though as I would prefer my data not be stored somewhere else.
daft_pink··on What I love about Django
I like Django too, but find it difficult to deploy. While frontend frameworks can be easily deployed via a cdn and some microservice backends on something like cloudflare or aws, I find Django very difficult to deploy because it needs an underlying server running 24/7.
daft_pink··on Google Is Censoring Reviews of ICE Detention Centers
Why would they allow reviews of ICE Dentention Centers anyways? Who gives a 5 star review to a prison?
daft_pink··on Big tech needs to justify AI spending as investors dump stocks
I would say this month we are buying expensive personal subscriptions for the people who really need AI and canceling subscriptions for people who really don’t adopt it instead of having Gemini Claude and ChatGPT subscriptions for everyone for all 3. We just have cheap Gemini with google workspace for everyone and high end personal for power users.

Anecdotal but this is the current state at our company.

Anecdotal but

daft_pink··on How proprietary formats have become Microsoft’s main tool for lock-in
I feel they are pushing their own narrative without really having any evidence.

We use Microsoft at work because we would either use Microsoft or Google for email. The email service is critical to the choice. We can’t run our own reliably and other vendors just don’t interoperate the same way.

Microsoft Office simply isn’t that expensive and it’s very easy to hire people who know how to use it and are comfortable with it. We don’t usually libre office because it’s really not practical to spend hours retraining expensive knowledge workers. Payroll is over half of our budget and our largest single expense. Software is cheap and isn’t even close.

daft_pink··on Credit Card Points Are a Transfer from the Broke to the Comfortable
Aren’t they actually funded by swipe fees and the banks just make money off the interest but generally swipe fees are a transfer from the retailer to the consumer but ultimately built into the price.
daft_pink··on In Germany if you say a restaurant is just ok they send the gestapo after you
I think that generally if you ignore the 5 star review and then look for a staircase pattern of 4, 3, 2 and 1 star reviews on yelp or google then that place is generally awesome. If most reviews are either 5 stars or 1 stars then the place probably sucks. It generally indicates tha legit users are giving a bad review and the company is trying to mask this by recruiting or paying for 5 star reviews. I find the histogram shape to be far more useful than the review average.

Basically businesses only pay for 5 star reviews and 1 star reviews are generally a really bad indicator so the quantity of reviewing in all other categories is the most useful and the size and scope of 1 star review in relation to non fake reviews are really useful indicators

daft_pink··on SpaceX and the myth of independent Wall St research
Wall Street research is a scam mostly because efficient market hypothesis suggests that real research would cost so much more than this type of coverage and distribution would be much less so obviously the research is for some other purpose and you can’t purchase stock advice for far less than it is worth and most people can’t afford it.
daft_pink··on Ask HN: Did Fable disappear from your Claude usage and requires credits now?
I logged into my Claude work account with $99 per month level and it says included until July 19 next to Fable when I click the model selector button.
daft_pink··on How Has Roman Concrete Lasted for Millennia? 1,900-Year-Old Latrine Offers Clues
