daffy··on Roam Research reaches $1m ARR in 6 weeks
What's the main attraction of org-roam over org? I had a look at it, but didn't quite understand how to use it. Seemed as if it wanted one file per note.
daffy··on “Irregardless” is part of a penumbra of unorthodox English words
> This is the social signaling aspect of language at work

How so? Surely those who say `regardless', the vast majority, are not trying to signal anything.

daffy··on “Irregardless” is part of a penumbra of unorthodox English words
But that would be mixing Latin and English, just as bad as television!
daffy··on “Irregardless” is part of a penumbra of unorthodox English words
I wonder, are there any statistics on descriptivist and prescriptivist attitudes in various groups? Or any recent defenses of prescriptivism?
daffy··on “Irregardless” is part of a penumbra of unorthodox English words
Factule, perhaps, from the unattested but regular diminutive factulum.
daffy··on “Irregardless” is part of a penumbra of unorthodox English words
The author seems to claim that `irregardless' is all right and that caring about it is caring too much and vain. He compares it to other malformed words such as `television' and `flammable'. But there seems to be a significant difference between these and that. While recognizing the malformedness of these words require knowledge of Greek and Latin, recognizing that of `irregardless' is trivial for anyone who is proficient in current English: it is obviously a stupid word, and that makes it stupider.
daffy··on KDE Slimbook: Linux Laptop with Ryzen 4000
What's the potential-firmware-backdoor situation? Is there something equivalent to the Intel Management Engine?
daffy··on Deep Work and the 30-Hour Method for Learning a New Skill (2018)
I started on Newport's book a few years ago but stopped because I hated his writing style.
daffy··on A look at the Gemini protocol: a brutally simple alternative to the web
I was running it on Arch Linux. I may just lack the font.
daffy··on A look at the Gemini protocol: a brutally simple alternative to the web
Maybe the specification should prohibit smilies.
daffy··on A look at the Gemini protocol: a brutally simple alternative to the web
I found I could read this in EMACS with a package called Elpher, but there's a smiley or something I couldn't see.
daffy··on Zettlr – FOSS markdown editor for personal knowledge management and publishing
Do tell if you find this has any advantage over Org mode.
daffy··on Those who exercise free speech should also defend it even when it’s offensive
I'm curious, what exactly did he say?
daffy··on Procrastination is driven by our desire to avoid difficult emotions, says expert
You seem to imply that, if one is free and just follows one's immediate impulses, one automatically ends up doing something worthwhile and non-bullshit. But there are lots of free men (economically independent men) who give their lives to bullshit; so that can't be quite right.
daffy··on Procrastination is driven by our desire to avoid difficult emotions, says expert
The claim seems to be: (i) if you are economically independent, procrastination is an indication that the postponed task is not worth doing after all; (ii) if you are forced to do it for money, procrastination is just a natural reaction to being forced to do something one doesn't want to do, namely not doing it for as long as possible.
daffy··on Zoom closes account of U.S.-based Chinese activist after Tiananmen event
> recording content, etc.

Would it be technically feasible to record everything?

daffy··on Metafont (1984)
I'd be interested in hearing about experiences with Metafont from those of you who have put effort into it. How far did you get and how much time did you spend? Any advice for others who would like to try?
daffy··on Metafont (1984)
With ctrl-z, the programme is just paused, and can be resumed with fg or bg.
daffy··on Metafont (1984)
Sounds like it may be worth buying. But I'll see how far I get with the Metafontbook first.
daffy··on Metafont (1984)
Right, so: if one intends to sell a font, Metafont may not be a good idea, but if the purpose is to make a font for one's own use in book typography, and one is otherwise inclined to Metafont, then these concerns needn't stand in one's way.

And perhaps it would be possible to make a vector-outputting version, if this has already been done for MetaPost.

daffy··on Metafont (1984)
Does this have prose in addition to the source code; or can you get the same information from looking at the code distributed with texlive?
daffy··on Metafont (1984)
But the bitmaps can be of any resolution, can't they? Is there any really cogent reason to prefer vector output?
daffy··on Metafont (1984)
Surely, the 128-glyph limit is no real obstacle? Just make more fonts. Or convert to another format after designing in Metafont.
daffy··on Metafont (1984)
Are there any Metafont projects going on?
daffy··on Metafont (1984)
It can be found with images missing. The full version can be borrowed from archive.org.

daffy··on Workman Keyboard Layout (2010)
There is an analysis of Workman here:

daffy··on Workman Keyboard Layout (2010)
I've been using qgmlwb for 4 years or so. It's difficult to compare with qwerty, since I didn't type properly before, but it feels pretty comfortable and effortless. I feel like my right hand is overused, but I doubt it has anything to do with the layout, I just don't like using my right pinky; or, rather, it doesn't like to be used.
daffy··on Zoom says it won’t encrypt free calls so it can work more with law enforcement
Is there any reason to believe that, if you pay, Zoom can't listen to your conversations anyway?
