daemonl··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2018)
ECAL | Melbourne, Australia | ONSITE

Join our small, high performing team as we split our monolith to micro-services.

- Backend developer: familiar with complied languages and database constraints. https://www.seek.com.au/job/37123997

- Frontend developer: we like React/Redux, but it would be your stack to own.

Apply to damien@ecal.com

ECAL is a calendar management company, we allow clients such as the English Premier League, Ticketek and MLS to publish calendars into subscriber's calendars via ICS, and Google and Microsoft APIs.

Current stack: PHP (zend-ish), Mongo, EC2

New stack: Docker, ECS, then the 'best tool for the job', so far we have added Go for network heavy things, Python for Spark and Ops, a little Node, Postgres for the data, React on the front.

I'm hiring for people I can trust, who can take an idea and make it work whilst collaborating with the team on micro-service contract design, testing, and 'best practices' within each service. Strong opinions, loosely held etc.

These are not entry-level positions, but we aren't looking for 'ninjas' either. We are more interested in what you can do with us than what you have done in the past.

We are looking for the best candidate for the position, you will be considered based on your skill and passion for programming, not your race, religion, gender, age, sexuality, political leanings, eye colour, opinions on cubism or the oxford comma, or anything else not related to programming.

daemonl··on Why bullshit is no laughing matter
"When wellbeing is at stake, truth should be the principal concern. "

"a critical mindset ... is our only hope in a world so full of bullshit."

I agree wholeheartedly... but I have no proof or reason to back it up - why is it so important?

daemonl··on AWS Java documentation is fucked
I love the way you have expressed this, kind of what I'm trying to get across to people but can't quite put it into words.

Any interest in fleshing it out into a whole post?

daemonl··on BLOKK – A font for clients who don't understand lorem ipsum
I use the introduction text from the Wikipedia article on lorem ipsum. Best of both worlds, and meta lols.
daemonl··on [dead]
Yep. As is google search - a little bit, anyway
daemonl··on My poor use of golang's defer woke me up
That's really detailed feedback, thanks for that!

I'm actually fighting with some interesting things now with error handling, I wan't aware I had to do my own retry on deadlocks.

Ugh, it's just one of those days I feel like I'm not as good at this as I thought I was.

daemonl··on My poor use of golang's defer woke me up
Or... lack of project management.

There is definitely something to be written on that, but - well I'm not the guy. Yet.

daemonl··on My poor use of golang's defer woke me up
We could start one?

I think that's what HN kind of is...

daemonl··on My poor use of golang's defer woke me up
Yep. I know. I even deleted the github repo. I'm seriously not sure what I was doing. Remove all traces of a bad idea?
daemonl··on My poor use of golang's defer woke me up
That one I'm still not clear on. I THINK I should be closing that particular rows set already, the SQL is LIMIT 1 and I check if !rows.Next(){return ...}, yet... here we are :-)
daemonl··on Really need advice: Is is reasonable to quit?
Sounds like the job is bad for your health. Like really bad. Do you live somewhere with a lot of opportunity for programmers?

Also, imposter syndrome never makes sense, It's just what we have :-)

daemonl··on Apple likes our name and so do we
Oh, and rectangles and apples.
daemonl··on Apple likes our name and so do we
Fair point about the series, but apple own i* and *Kit. Anything else?
daemonl··on HealthKit – Apple stole our name
I doubt there'll be a lawsuit - more of an SEO battle... which doesn't look particularly good for HK the First.
daemonl··on Javascript Frameworks Are Amazing and Nobody Is Happy
Our customers demand more of us, we demand more of our frameworks.

It wasn’t long ago that building a site that worked on a mobile was the most fantastic and impressive thing they had ever seen. Before that, there weren’t even ‘mobiles’ to have ‘sites’ on.

If the demands put on programs were the same as they were 10, 20 years ago, I would have my week’s work done in 5 minutes. But it’s not amazing any more, it’s boring and usual and old as soon as it is released. Our customer or boss just saw a new example up on nvd3, so d3’s dead now, and you better have already learned nvd3 (that’s a pretty old example), oh and it still works on a mobile, and fills my retina display, right? Oh and it doesn’t move properly when I scroll on my android tablet. That’s the same as an iPad, right? Oh and John said it’s broken in IE.

Our demands come from our customer’s expectation that this stuff is easy now. And hells yeah it is SO much easier than it used to be, but it’s far from being as easy as they think it is.

We usually only have an hour to get going in a new framework, if it’s not clear after that, we move on, because something newer (better?) just hit #1 on HN.

But let’s remember how exiting all of this is. Programming has changed for the better. It’s cool and in demand now. People are paying us to do the cool things we used to dream about, they just might not be giving us quite enough time, so we blame the frameworks.

daemonl··on Things People Hate about Your Open Source Docs
You mean you can't figure it out from an alphabetical list of command line flags? Oh, wait, neither can I.
daemonl··on MySQL man pages silently relicensed away from GPL
Or a Dell or a Samsung or a Lenovo, any hardware, obviously, or Windows...
daemonl··on NSA admits listening to U.S. phone calls without warrants
You will get more insight reading it in another 5, 10, 50 years, true, everyone does, so imagine how much more you will comprehend in the future given your starting point today.

When I was 15, I let 'mature' people stop me from believing I knew anything, and then I was introduced to 'the more you know the more you know you don't know' - its good advice for anyone who thinks they know everything. But don't ever let it stop you from doing anything, believing anything or especially exploring anything.

If you are gifted, and if you believe you are gifted, look at the future for how much more awesome you will be, but don't forget how awesome you are now.

daemonl··on Retiring Chrome Frame
Some I.T. policies also disallow chrome frame. Google had provided a policy loop hole which helped ie6 look like a legitimate option. Its not anymore...

I think its time enterprise I.T managgers update their thinking, and I think the less comfortable backwards compatible tools that exist, the better.

daemonl··on Roots – Better CSS
Responsive is one thing, but I can't even zoom in on a mobile...

Dear all web developers, please resize your Web browser to about a mobile phone width before deploying. Just once. Just to check. Especially if your page is about a web technology.

daemonl··on CSS Architecture
Shhh, you're not allowed to ask that.
daemonl··on Apple has a Software Problem — Why I’ll be Switching to Android
Sounds logical, but Google are putting so much effort in to outshine Apple on Apple hardware that iPhone users get better Google maps and google Now than Android users.

Google's iOS team are producing some fantastic products, and I'm considering moving back to an iPhone to take advantage of them.

daemonl··on I Resent My Cofounder
From my limited understanding of startups, that's quite normal.

I'd suggest first trying to really 'get' that it's perfect just the way it is. No really, it's perfect. And it's perfect that you want to do something about it.

Then you will be in a space to choose if you WANT it to work like it is, or find a new co-founder, or have it work a completely new way.

daemonl··on Life is wasting my time
As long as that's because you have realised a 'sucky' life isn't all that bad.
daemonl··on Life is wasting my time
Thank you, that's really nice!
daemonl··on Life is wasting my time
That evokes some interesting feelings. While I'm ready to let go of being the 'uber-hacker' in favor of, you know, life, I still want to be among the elite, or at least do something big and great before I settle in to the bigger picture of life. But that's probably got something to do with not being able to see the bigger picture. How recursive. Is it truly better when you get there?
daemonl··on Life is wasting my time
You totally got it. Apparently not many others did, my bad. Thanks for your comment.
daemonl··on Sorting and Searching Algorithms: A Cookbook
Firmly bookmarked! Thanks!
daemonl··on Samsung Copy and Paste Bug
I tried... But i can't crash my s3 and I've been copying and pasting for 5 solid minutes (which I'm probably not getting back)
