How did they learn to make money online? By selling courses on how to make money online?

Did she say how long it took to get to those sales? Did she have any exclusive distribution deals?

Can you provide more details of what occurred? I'm curious and would like more info. since I never lived near any Amish people.

Did you work for pets.com?

Thanks for this. I would never imagine someone would take the time to create a documentary on anything JS.

I totally agree. For file transfer on my Fuji camera, I just take out the SD card and grab the files on a SD card reader (+ usb-c adapter) on my phone. (The Fuji wireless app won't let me transfer regular JPEGs or RAW files. Only compressed JPEGS less than 1MB large even though the original JPEGs are ~2.5 MB big.)

This sounds like great guidelines and "filters". Any bad experiences so far?

Did you ever find out why you have high cholesterol? Are you above or under 30?

So the manufacturer was just re-selling stuff from Amazon?

I would agree with you and say you can even go further on how people avoid approachable tools. People were asking for something "easier" than HyperCard. Customizing software, rather than learning and programming. Something like HyperStudio "Express" instead of HyperCard. I'm guessing this is why wizards (in Word) also became popular. Though they were meant to teach people concepts, but people ended up using them to avoid learning concepts.

16:38 of this video gives more details of that time when companies started dumbing down things to fulfill customer demand: https://youtu.be/9nd9DwCdQR0?t=998

(The presenters are associated with VPRI, Alan Kay's institute.)

OP here. It turns out it was explained back in 2013: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7357580

For some reason, I got my dates mixed up. At one point, _why did publish something post-2009, then went silent. I thought it was back in 2013, but it was earlier than that (between 2010-2012). Then in 2013 people discussed the new Wordpress site on the domain.

It was a problem with my memory, not with being too lazy to "site:news.ycombinator.com whytheluckystiff". Sorry for the mix-up.

I come from a working class family. We use to think that people who were Fortune 100 programmers didn't need supplementary income, just more time to spend "all that money they get paid." I do not have the intelligence or social skills to be a programmer or any Fortune 100 position. Why do you need supplemental income? (I ask because I am curious about a world I will never enter.)

There is also this camera: https://www.amazon.com/Security-Ethernet-Surveillance-Waterp...

It's compatible with ONVIF, Blue Iris and Zoneminder.

I decided to increase the budget and get a $60-$70 Amcrest camera: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Amcrest/node/7648105011

They are compatible with ZoneMinder and have a web interface for configuration. I found out about them from a blog post: https://blog.jasonantman.com/2018/05/amcrest-ip-camera-first...

Some of the Amcrest cameras, maybe all, also have an API.

Thanks. I decided to try this one out.

How long have you had it? Any annoying things about it?

What do you mean by, "and only then this challenge came to an end."? You simply stopped calling him?

I forgot to mention, that I was looking for one without the number pad. Apple also stopped making the USB/wired mini-keyboard. A few are available on eBay or Amazon Marketplace.

I saw one $50 brand-new wired mini-Apple keyboard on eBay from one seller, but there is always the chance it might break down. In which case, I would have to go back and buy another one... probably when the prices have gone up.

A low-profile tenkeyless mechanical keyboard might be an option: https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Extra-Thin-Switch...

How about the corded Mini Keyboard C3 Corded (Pro Black edition)?: https://www.penclic.se/keyboard-landing-page/?type=corded

The Mini C3 Office Corded (with indented keys): https://www.penclic.se/shop/keyboard/new-mini-keyboard-c3-of...

Right, but the bluetooth transmitter is still on. Granted, the likelihood someone will try to hack and steal my $10 bank account credentials is unlikely. For some people, it's just nice to not have a bluetooth transmitter on a keyboard.

Right. But, people like me hate dealing with confrontation and govt offices. I would just pay with cash and go to a competing service next time (Uber, Lyft, mass transit.) If only there were startup mass transit providers in cities.

Just out of curiosity, does DC limit the number of cab drivers?

I don't understand why people are downvoting you. At least they could explain how Uber is different than Pets.com.

Where can they be bought? Via a cellphone provider or online retailer?

Right, but I doubt Congress would spend that money helping the environment. Look at what they spend money on right now:

* $1,280 per coffee cup: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/10/22/ai...

* $1.2 trillion to “modernize” the US nuclear arsenal and production facilities: https://billmoyers.com/story/the-trillion-dollar-question-th...

* $38 billion in "defense aid" to a foreign country: https://www.sun-sentinel.com/florida-jewish-journal/fl-jj-us...

What was the name of the documentary?

A list of Alan Kay talks:

Did he ever have trouble finding employers or paying clients?

It might also help to know Kay has said the Internet is a good example of "Real OOP": A system made up of other systems sending messages that are "desires", not commands. (paraphrasing)

(He has also been quite humble. He claims his own original ideas aren't very good and all the best stuff came from others. On Smalltalk, he also mentions Dan Ingalls did most of the work while Kay only did the mathematics.)

Why was he unusual? (I didn't read the article.)
