They can adjust their culture so they promote employees for maximizing the value of existing products, finding product market fit, etc instead of building new projects only to move on from them.

They can gate the creation of new product and require more robust market and user research to ensure they're not releasing something that doesn't have a chance of hitting whatever their targets are, or would require more budget than willing to invest.

They don't just kill products, they often leave them painfully unfinished and unsupported. Support forums are complete ghost towns.

Did you know the "new" Apps Script editor doesn't have a version history or way to revert? Too bad, the old one was sunset. Google would tell you to pound sand, but there's no one there to listen.

One example in an absolute ocean of examples.

d0gbread··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
Except you can have multiple wallets, no credit score affected, and cheaper or no transaction fees.
d0gbread··on Bluesky facing degraded performance due to record high traffic
People handle creating an email address just fine. There's some terminology and UX to work out but it's hardly insurmountable.
d0gbread··on Reddit subs with millions of followers plan to extend the blackout indefinitely
They could have required Reddit Premium to use third party apps or something of the sort. Or injected ads into third party apps via the API. Or forced third party apps through a verification process to get an API key not unlike Google's Oauth process and monetize it differently for training use cases, etc.
d0gbread··on Reddit CEO doubles down on attack on Apollo developer in drama-filled AMA
Christian also built the app out of college and is now thrust into C-level conversations? I would nominate him next CEO of Reddit if he wasn't a bit all over the place.
d0gbread··on Prompt engineering vs. blind prompting
I think that's already taken and more about hacking via variables in the prompt like SQL injection.

I would just got with prompt tuning.

d0gbread··on Why did The Beatles get so many bad reviews?
It's not like that at all unless you've selected a single criteria, not mentioned it, and assume everyone applies it the same.
d0gbread··on NYU Chemistry Professor Fired After Students Said His Class Was Too Hard
Maybe the mindset has shifted but I'm unclear why that's a bad thing. The pass rate at my university was similar. If this has been constant (that so many people have to fail and retake) why does the curriculum stay the same? The goal is to learn the material.

If you're training for a marathon you don't sign up for a marathon, fail, then sign up for another. You slow down and work up to it in successful chunks.

Organic chem seems like the defacto class that people struggle with, but the same was true at my institution for physics and other classes.

Maybe instead we should be looking at a different or longer track for that material, or even earlier education that is producing students that might not have the math and science foundation out of high school?

d0gbread··on Infinite Scrolling: When to Use It, When to Avoid It
Do.

I have sometimes used services where I prefer having infinite scroll. I sometimes prefer it.

d0gbread··on Infinite Scrolling: When to Use It, When to Avoid It
I use the scrollbar on mobile. It's a way to quickly navigate to a section of a particularly large document that would take tons of swiping. Not a frequent use case but an absolute necessity on occasion.
d0gbread··on Tabler: Free and open source dashboard HTML/CSS framework
Most designers happen to serve mostly common customers but there are countless highly used industry specific web applications out there that are navigated primarily by shortcuts, and that software too, has designers. Designers that from my experience are often trying to make B2B, high data density solutions into fluffy UIs despite clear feedback that it's not what users want.
d0gbread··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
If pools, beaches, and lakes were manufactured primarily to kill, and people used them to cause mass tragedy... maybe?
d0gbread··on Millions of electric cars are coming. What happens to all the dead batteries?
One nice side effect of this is the feedback loop to the OEM and another metric around useful life. I'd love to give a window AC unit back to the OEM with some notes.
d0gbread··on Keep the web free, say no to Web3 (2021)
Are you suggesting that since it's been tried and failed there's no possible future or technology that might enable democratization of these services?
d0gbread··on De-AMP: Cutting out Google and enhancing privacy
Do you have specific questions about how the crypto features work? They're optional by the way, but I've found them an amazing way to regularly donate to a couple key blogs I follow.
d0gbread··on Ask HN: Have you had any real benefits from apps like Headspace, Fabulous, etc?
Or, a recurring calendar invite. Or a million other solutions. But what about responding to OP and the question they asked?
d0gbread··on Google Analytics 4
You've seen vanity metrics? That's throwing the baby out with the bath water. You just haven't seen the value it brings. Analytics isn't black magic and it won't run your business for you.
d0gbread··on Google Analytics 4
It's a better data model with a significantly worse UI. Hard to believe they put it out there as is.
d0gbread··on How our free plan stays free
Similar to Airtable, Coda is another nice example. Their engineering team has put out some amazing work, and their release notes (via email) are typically very well done, with concise gifs of the functionality. It's so easy to skip those bells and whistles.

I will say to Google's benefit, the Data Studio team is building a pretty nice product, but there are some crazy gaps and the custom connector docs leave a lot to be desired.

d0gbread··on Vanced: YouTube adblocker for Android
Having a kid is what put it over the top for me too. That, compounded by Google's ads being all over the map in terms of content, location in videos, and most importantly, length. I've put on a kids video and mid video there's a ten minute ad playing and a two year old absorbing some content I did not approve.
d0gbread··on What makes writing more readable?
The way they rephrased also simply omitted detail, which doesn't seem like a fair comparison. I'd much rather see an example where no detail is lost but would still have wider comprehension. Literally dumbing it down by stripping detail doesn't seem like a clear best practice.
d0gbread··on A not so gentle intro to web3
Can you explain why proof of ownership has anything to do with enforcement of that proof? We don't call the county recorder for trespassing.
d0gbread··on Ask HN: How do you consume HN?
Harmonic on Android is nice.
d0gbread··on DoorDash will require all employees to deliver goods
Testing like CX, not testing like QA.
d0gbread··on An iframe from googlesyndication.com tries to access the camera and microphone
I thought they meant more like sandbox environment. Why would the API to access those things exist at all?
d0gbread··on Is Web3 anything?
Countless defi loans provided in minutes.
d0gbread··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
I'm interpreting your comment as:

x = x

As if that's insightful. But in the spirit of HN, can you say more? My understanding is that renewables are the cheapest and will likely continue to trend in that direction, causation or not. So are you suggesting maybe there's a chance of a super inexpensive non-renewable overtaking this trend?

d0gbread··on New MacBook Pro has first ‘DIY-friendly’ battery replacement design since 2012
I think there are early and mid 2012s that differ quite a bit. I have a mid 2012 and the battery replacement is a nightmare. I'm waiting for my 14" to arrive, I'll switch over, then give it a go so I can hand me down the 2012 with some life in it. And if I blow it so be it.
d0gbread··on Apple Says Notch Is a 'Smart Way' to Give Users More Space for Content
It's literally of no consequence. I wouldn't say I prefer it, but why not just look at it as two bits of screen added vs a bit removed? You can black out those pixels if it's that upsetting and your problem is solved.
d0gbread··on Apple Says Notch Is a 'Smart Way' to Give Users More Space for Content
I would agree with you if they didn't just knock it out of the park. Just observation and made up statistics but the only grievance is the notch and while it gets headlines it seems like 9 out of 10 don't mind at all.
