cynicalbastard··on Pistol sights
> I was told once by a proficient pistol shooter that he ignored where the front sight was on the target, and paid attention only to the alignment of the two sights relative to each other. Since he did in fact hit the target,

is the "two sights" here the rear sight which has two posts, or the two sites as in front sight + rear sight?

several pages of reading and then .. an ambiguously worded conclusion.

cynicalbastard··on Dismantling a Million Tons of North Sea Oil Rigs
it's relevant because the people who write the billion dollar checks don't want to bother with the risk.
cynicalbastard··on How the Australian government plans to access encrypted messages
> That's not the case with encryption.

sure it isn't.

cynicalbastard··on How the Australian government plans to access encrypted messages
yeah, we're in agreement. there will be no overthrow, instead the government (and all governments) will simply take away more and more of your rights, until they're all gone. both the ones you like, and the ones you don't like. doesn't matter; they're all going out the window, slowly but surely.

next on the list: encryption and data privacy. and there are plenty of useful idiots out there who think encryption somehow harms children, they will come out of the woodwork at exactly the right time, and scream the loudest and make the least sense, you can be sure of that.

cynicalbastard··on How the Australian government plans to access encrypted messages
> If we could restrict the use of encryption by the bad guys without compromising it's use by the good guys

oh, don't you worry, the politicians will do it anyway, with much public support, and then you will sound like the crazy, paranoid one arguing for military grade assault encryption in the hands of the dangerous, villainous public.

edit: i see you deleted the part i quoted. makes sense. cognitive dissonance is a hell of a thing. feels like razor blades in the mind!

cynicalbastard··on How the Australian government plans to access encrypted messages
> So if I go crazy armed with military grade encryption, how many school kids can I kill before the cops get me?

don't worry, i suspect your government will be ramming this answer down your throat by year's end.

cynicalbastard··on Ask HN: Do you have a business idea? Why haven't you tried it?
building the actual application is like 10% of starting a business, and businesses that need applications built are probably only 10% of businesses in general. let's be generous, and say it's 25% each.

i know this is impossible for you to believe.

so in other words, the aspect of 'business' that your particular skill covers is probably about 1-7% of the entire domain.

cynicalbastard··on Stench gas
it isn't that. my dad worked in biochemistry and that's what i'm talking about.

my shitty screwdrivers have the smell you're talking about.

cynicalbastard··on Stench gas
is that the nasty sour smelling chemical? sort of like sulfur, vinegar, burnt gunpowder, and vodka, mixed together? i used to get a whiff of it at my dad's bench at his workplace.
cynicalbastard··on Show HN: Welder – set up your Linux server with plain shell scripts
it runs the local contents of ./my-setup-script.sh on the remote server in a way that escapes all the special characters so they don't do unexpected things.
cynicalbastard··on The truth about tarot
i learned this the hard way, after doing what the coin said, and having to reverse course a couple of times. on minor stuff only, of course. on anything important i'll sleep on it and the answer will usually come to me the next day or two.
cynicalbastard··on Ask HN: How can I experience SF and Silicon Valley in two weeks?
for many, the san jose part comes on monday morning.
cynicalbastard··on Ask HN: How can I experience SF and Silicon Valley in two weeks?
don't forget about the irish coffees and overpriced mediocre croissants. or pretending not to be alcoholics at brunch the next morning, with 5 of your closest enablers, slamming bottomless mimosas and bloody marys. do this while talking about work, and how drunk you got last night, and how amazing the benedict is while posting pictures of it to instagram, even though you can barely taste it after waiting 90 minutes in line for the privilege of paying $75 per person not including tip and the foodservice healthcare surcharge.
cynicalbastard··on “Let her speak please”
he was tolerable even five years ago!
cynicalbastard··on Options vs. Cash
> That means everybody gets diluted including the founders, the angels, the VCs, and yes the employees too.

founders, angels, and early round VCs can simply issue themselves more stock from the pool of unissued shares to counteract dilution.

cynicalbastard··on “Let her speak please”
> Journalists definitely like to hear themselves talk, even when formulating questions while moderating a discussion.

slightly off topic, but with the rise of ubiquitous audio/video and the interview/discussion/panel format, it is infuriating how many hosts just blatantly speak over their guests, over and over and over. it's one of the biggest tells between a professional interviewer and a rank amateur. i can barely make it through my weekly playlist without cringing at half the dialogue.

i completely stopped listening to charlie rose because of this. it's absolutely atrocious. it's not helpful, and makes me anxious when i'm trying to unwind. some guests simply continue speaking, and the entire discussion devolves into little more than a god damn shouting match.

sexism or not, i hope this public assassination at least makes one loudmouth blowhard reconsider his default modus operandi. just let your guests speak! for fuck's sake, it's not that hard.

cynicalbastard··on Alex Honnold Scales El Capitan Without Ropes, and the Climbing World Reels
i used to think that, but now i'm not so sure. his free climbs are basically choreographed down to the inch, well ahead of time.

that is a completely different thing than just going up because he's in a good mood and thinks he can do it.

cynicalbastard··on iPad Pro
consider getting the cable that connects iphone to camera. it's $30 but pretty useful. you can transfer/edit on phone, and upload directly to its permanent home in cloud storage.

probably won't work for a professional but is fine for photo hobbyists. it's nice not having a laptop or an external drive in your camera bag.

i hope you've looked into minimizing the property tax liabilities for when that house gets transferred to you.
cynicalbastard··on Mice fed a time-restricted, high-fat diet show reduced metabolic disease (2012)
his youtube lectures and interviews are also good.

i wouldn't advise sharing his findings with most other people though, especially those who are prone to get swept up with the prevailing beliefs on things like low-fat eating and/or fasting.

the great thing about modern society with regards to diet is you can eat whatever you want and get your blood and weight/fat% tested as often as you want without anyone else's input or permission.

cynicalbastard··on Too many people are buying cars using financial products they do not understand
> You're arguing that the price of the car going up or down makes a difference for the decision if you should use a loan or not to buy it.

no i'm not. i said condition B is often present in condition A, and that given A, you'd be stupid not to do B.

NOT that A necessitates B or vice versa. that's something you just made up out of thin air.

cynicalbastard··on Too many people are buying cars using financial products they do not understand
uh, no, the bank will loan you the money no matter what, as long as they think you can pay it back or you can put up collateral to forfeit in case of default.

they're not in the speculation game, they're in the loan making game.

cynicalbastard··on Too many people are buying cars using financial products they do not understand
yes they are. rich people get loans to buy expensive things instead of giving up the cash, often collateralized by their other toys/stock/trust fund/whatever. rich people also overspend, over-leverage, and overindulge just like everyone else.

the difference is they call up their banker and accountant instead of filling out a form at the dealership.

if you're expecting an asset like a 918 or 911RS or R to go up in price, you'd be stupid to not leverage your cash at a low interest rate and put the rest of it to work somewhere else. at this point it becomes a business move, not a trip to the mall. it's like financing a construction project.

do you think they buy jets and yachts and big homes in cash also? of course not. they setup holding companies and finance the purchases, and then charter or rent the asset out to make some of the money back and to pay the crew of people that run these types of properties. that's why you can rent an amazing vacation home for $1k a night, or spend a few days on that yacht with a bunch of friends for $5k, or rent a ferrari for a few hundred bucks.

rich people are exceptionally good at monetizing and leveraging facets of their life that look like giant expenditures to you or i. poor people try to emulate this behavior, and meet their financial ruin, because they aren't savvy or rich enough to make it work.

cynicalbastard··on EU warn pesticides are far more dangerous than was thought
i think everyone knows poison is bad, but the question is, how much is proven to cause problems?

chlorinated pools are also full of poison but that isn't really an issue.

almost certainly not.
