cyberlurker··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
Based on what I know, $800 is roughly two weeks depending on where you live. A full month at $1600 is not unreasonable for an 8 hour work day, 5 days a week at a reasonably good daycare. It can be perhaps as much as $600 lower a month in low cost areas and hundreds higher in major metro areas. This is for one kid.

But these costs are dwarfed by hiring a legal nanny for watching a single kid. To do it legally in most states requires making them a full time employee with benefits and insurance, which I suppose is nice and all except it makes the entire thing unaffordable for even upper middle class incomes. So of course plenty of people do it under the table, which has its own set of problems.

Childcare and modern parenting is actually fascinating and depressing. The answer tends to be money and/or leaning on family.

Also the government does some kind of tax savings account for daycare expenses but the total amount falls far short of enough to cover services for a full time job. An obvious policy tweak would be to do a means tested daycare spending account with caps that reflect realistic full time jobs and help low income folk. The current one is a joke.

Back on topic: an underrated benefit of WFH is you can set your own hours with some clever time management with a partner. A parent can get up early and do work, have the other parent drop the kid at daycare, and then the first parent can pickup the kid from daycare so the second parent can work longer. And there can be trading of time between the parents to accommodate deadlines. Having to physically go into an office on a regular basis screws this entire system up. The forced nature of in-office work is something I will fight against as much as I can, even though I very much enjoy gathering with others to work in person when it makes sense.

Yea that makes no sense. Maybe during the pandemic it made sense when daycares were closed down and people were worried about the health risks. But now, there is no way you can tend to a kid and be a productive remote employee at the same time.

cyberlurker··on Experiencing decreased performance with ChatGPT-4
He asked a dosage question similar to your second example and without tricking it, it would not give a response. The drugs were not as common (at least I wasn’t familiar with them) as what you listed, so maybe that had something to do with it.
cyberlurker··on Experiencing decreased performance with ChatGPT-4
Anecdotal:

I introduced my doctor to ChatGPT and Bard many months ago and they were impressed.

Fast forward a few days ago and I asked them if they had used either since. They said it was far inferior to Google, so no. So I asked them to show me an example.

Basically any medical question was answered with “go ask a doctor”. I suppose because of liability concerns. Both were basically useless.

So this decreased performance may not be exactly the same as my anecdote, but it certainly reminds me of it.

cyberlurker··on BART ridership is still down nearly 70% from pre-Covid levels
I had high hopes for NYC when they hired the new MTA guy before Covid. But then he got pushed out by Cuomo and it seems like he was prevented from carrying out the reforms needed to fix the subway properly. I highly doubt the state, which controls the budget, will ever make the subway free. I am doubtful they will even pony up the cash to perform the maintenance the system truly needs.

cyberlurker··on The bill of materials for the Apple headset leaked
I am blown away by how bad using other music apps on the Apple Watch can be for listening without a phone (and no sim).

I haven’t tried in some time but about a year ago YouTube Music wouldn’t work at all and Spotify was janky. I started my run and after the buffer was exhausted my music stopped playing even though I thought I had downloaded it onto the watch.

Probably the solution is Apple Music but that is annoying.

cyberlurker··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
Whether you think it is a good value is up for debate but users do get some benefit from buying through the App Store. (Security, convenience, etc.)

You get nothing extra from buying HP first party ink otherwise they wouldn’t do this.

If an electric car is in an accident and the battery catches fire, my understanding is it is very difficult to get under control.

Something I am curious about is what will happen when we have hundreds of electric cars going through the Lincoln Tunnel? Will battery fires be better or worse than gas fires?

cyberlurker··on The lifesaving sled dog Balto had genes unlike those of dog breeds today
I share your unpopular opinion and raise you that plenty of suburban families have dogs that waste away in yards when they really would benefit from walks or hikes.
cyberlurker··on The lifesaving sled dog Balto had genes unlike those of dog breeds today
As someone who has had many mutts and rescued purebreds… I’m assuming you don’t know what you’re doing if you think all mutts are difficult. Generally, people don’t exercise their dogs enough and then run into problems. Doesn’t matter the dog, but a consistent routine of lengthy walks and runs has never failed.

And if you don’t have time, don’t get a dog.

cyberlurker··on Google was beloved as an employer for years. Then it laid off thousands by email
I suspect this was not the main reason for the layoffs. But whether it was the intention or not, it definitely is a powerful psychological tool in negotiations during a time when many employees were demanding more and more.

cyberlurker··on Twitch CEO Emmett Shear is resigning
Anecdotally, I see it recommended a lot in my feed and I don’t search for it. I know not to go to “Just chatting” basically.

But this doesn’t prevent the other problem where streamers will watch those others on their stream.

I’m not that bothered about it but I think it might be a problem that it’s a part of twitch culture.

cyberlurker··on Early morning university classes linked to poor sleep and academic performance
Yup. Our public transport sucks everywhere. Even NYC. And as much as I would have loved to bike it is not safe. I biked to work for a while in different cities in California and the bike lane quality varied greatly. I am not a fan of LA. Northern California seemed better for biking.

But also, outside a few areas in the US on the coasts, this country is much bigger and more spread out than EU countries. This makes driving a necessity for many people. People mostly burn gas because the alternatives aren't practical.

cyberlurker··on Early morning university classes linked to poor sleep and academic performance
I didn’t like 8AM classes but I took them to force myself to get to school early so I could get a parking spot. Then I camped there until my classwork was done.

It worked for me but I think I would have performed better with later classes. 10AM classes are probably the best. Not too close to lunch, not too early.

cyberlurker··on U.S. credit card debt jumps 18.5% and hits a record $930.6B
It’s actually a myth that carrying a balance does anything to your credit score. Low utilization of your credit limit and long history of the credit line, combined with history of on time payments is what matters.

You get a higher credit limit if they think your income is higher.

Also, parent poster is likely paying interest, which is the worst thing you can do on a credit card.
