cwales95··on Firefox on the brink?
I use GitHub frequently and have never came across that issue; can't speak for the other sites though. If you're sure it's not the website's fault I'd encourage you to submit feedback: https://webcompat.com/issues/new
cwales95··on Firefox on the brink?
I agree with some of what you said about social brownie points. Advertising can be really off putting (I'm very anti-advertisement but I'm not really their target audience since I mostly use Firefox these days). However, they have to do something to get the word out. There needs to be a reason for people to care to install Firefox.
cwales95··on Firefox on the brink?
Something has to change. Firefox is a GREAT browser. I think a lot of these things boil down to poor marketing. Things like these have to appear 'cool' and appeal to people. There has to be a reason for people to go out and actively want to download Firefox. Something akin to Apple's privacy adverts is how I'd go about it.
cwales95··on I will always prefer to work from home
I liked this post. A lot of the pros/cons resonated well with me. Going to save this for anytime some corporate person tries to "enlighten" me about the benefits of workers returning to the office.
cwales95··on Chrome Users Beware: Manifest V3 Is Deceitful and Threatening (2021)
They'll do anything to weaken user's ability to ensure their privacy and block ads it seems.
cwales95··on iOS 17.2 hints at Apple moving towards letting users sideload apps
I’d love to side load my own apps for personal use. There’s a hundred use cases for my home in which our my side loaded apps would be very beneficial. I have a few network restricted websites set up for me and my partner but an app would bet better I think. The mobile web is still quite frustrating to use so a native app would be ideal.
cwales95··on Steve Wozniak hospitalized after fainting at an event in Mexico City
Wishing him all the best!
cwales95··on GTA6 – First official trailer in early December
Ah yes. I can't wait for no single player DLC and 10 years of GTA 6 online.
cwales95··on US Smartphone Shipments Decline 19% in Q3 2023 as More Americans Delay Upgrade
The upgrades these days are so minor or barely noticeable I can’t think of any reason why I’d upgrade. The only thing may be artery life or camera but that’s it.
cwales95··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
I’m getting Baldur’s Gate 3 as a gift for Christmas this year and I’m looking forward to trying it.
cwales95··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Absolutely this. The overwhelming need to be “productive” has been wearing on me a while.

Gaming is a great stress reliever and I make sure to make some time for it everyday. I mainly like single player games for my PS5 such as Horizon, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher and more recently Spider-Man 2. Sometimes you just need to be selfish and have you time!

cwales95··on Revert Web Environment Integrity
Pretty much. This is likely more of a tactical regrouping.
cwales95··on Paste without formatting on macOS
I’m not the only one!
cwales95··on Why You Should Write Your Own Static Site Generator
I want to write my own SSG and probably will soon. My current site is built using Gatsby and oh boy it’s a lot more complicated than it really should be.
cwales95··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown is getting harder to dodge
And who’s stop an extension taking that stream and then filtering out the ads from that stream? More difficult but someone will implement it if YT takes that route.
cwales95··on Drugmakers are set to pay 23andMe to access consumer DNA
This is precisely why I will never use one of these services. The thought of a company being able to buy my DNA is beyond creepy.
cwales95··on Every trick Microsoft pulled to make you browse Edge instead of Chrome
MS just comes off desperate with their tricks trying to con users into using Edge. Then again, Chrome is no better with their attempts to dominate the web and force their own standards on other browsers to make ads harder to dodge.

Aside from Firefox, there's really not many other browsers I trust.

cwales95··on Why Is the Django Admin "Ugly"?
I’ve never thought the changing admin interface was ugly. A bit simple compared to others but sleek and pretty usable. No odd surprises.
cwales95··on Show HN: A virtual office for remote work
The only word that best describes this is “dystopian”. I’m sure some middle managers will love this but I’d run a mile if this was ever forced on me.
cwales95··on Show HN: A virtual office for remote work
And yet you developed the functionality to enable them to manage in an aggressive manor. Doesn’t make you come off any better.
cwales95··on Windows Copilot's is showing third-party Ads to Windows users
Your OS is meant to be neutral ground. Injecting ads into Windows is just unwelcome. I use macOS and if Apple ever did something similar I’d be jumping ship.
cwales95··on No limit to maximal lifespan in humans: how to beat a 122-year-old record (2022)
I had never considered that older might die purely because doctors may not see the need to dig in and diagnose them purely because they’re “old” and would “likely die soon anyway”. The older you get, the less medical intervention. With how much poorer we’re all getting it’ll probably only get worse.
cwales95··on GitHub Actions could be so much better
This is my normal CI/CD workflow -- even for GitLab. Debugging why CI/CD doesn't work is one of the worst headaches you can imagine.
cwales95··on UK Parliament passes Online Safety Bill
Pretty much. I’m not sure if it got included but if it was feasibly possible they absolutely would — which is just as bad in my opinion. Lack of capability does not nullify intent.
cwales95··on UK Parliament passes Online Safety Bill
Now this is a headline I didn't want to see pass. I wonder if Apple will do what they said and pull iMessage and FaceTime. Same with Meta and WhatsApp.
cwales95··on UK Parliament passes Online Safety Bill
Can confirm as a UK citizen. Laws are seeminly never really enforced from what I've noticed.
cwales95··on Lichess: Block Ads and Trackers
I love their stance on adblockers and privacy. It's exactly how I feel and I refuse to have them in my home or on my devices. I also love how they go the extra mile to show people how to implement common adblocking techniques.
cwales95··on Windows 11 system components use the default browser to open links in Europe
Apologies, I totally missed the sarcasm. And I get what you mea. Personally sick of companies forcing things on users for the sake of profit.
cwales95··on Windows 11 system components use the default browser to open links in Europe
Your argument doesn’t hold at all. The functionality is already there, so ask yourself, why are they depriving people outside of the EU this functionality when it’s already there?
cwales95··on Shit life syndrome
Same here. The Dropbox link in the other comment was useful.

Makes you wonder if there’s a conspiracy to stop those of us in the UK watching it even though we know how awful it is at times.
