cvwright··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
I had a relative named Null, who worked in tech in the 80s, 90s, and 00s. Apparently it caused him so many issues that he finally gave up and changed his name to the name of the town where our family came from.

I think he was a Java guy too. I’m sure that just made it worse.

cvwright··on Show HN: A website that heatmaps your city based on your housing preferences
Unfortunately if you built this, half of the world would publicly condemn you as a terrible horrible person.
cvwright··on What's happening inside the NIH and NSF
Almost all of the really high quality open source projects got that way because companies paid devs good money to work on them.
cvwright··on What's happening inside the NIH and NSF
So you think the US government should appoint someone to make our food healthier?
cvwright··on Apple is open sourcing Swift Build
Or containers. The Swift project is pretty good about keeping their Docker images up to date.
cvwright··on Apple is open sourcing Swift Build
They have also been working on a completely open source version of the Foundation library for use on Linux and other platforms. (IIRC the URLSession type is part of Foundation, as are many core building blocks that you need for making a real application.)
cvwright··on Our phones are killing our ability to feel sexy (2024)
You have free will to do what you want to do.

You do not have the ability to stop being you, the person who wants the things that you want. Even if you want to change yourself - and maybe succeed! - that desire for change is still part of being you. If you didn’t want it, you would have been someone else.

cvwright··on The Origins of Wokeness
It goes back even further than that.

There seemed to be a surge in 2011 too, when it became apparent that the Obama administration was going to let the big banks off the hook for the financial crisis.

cvwright··on The Begining of the End for ANT+ Wireless
Thanks, this was actually quite helpful. I’m just starting out, and had been wondering if I should get one.
cvwright··on An academic Great Gatsby Curve – How much academic success is inherited?
This is so ridiculously overstated.

I can think of at least 3-4 very highly respected faculty at top institutions who are short guys. Several more whose voice would never make it in a TV or radio career.

And that’s just in CS systems and security.

cvwright··on An academic Great Gatsby Curve – How much academic success is inherited?
Yeah. I used to think it was all nepotism / corruption, but (at least in STEM fields) there’s a bit more to it. My phd advisor is one of the most intense, hardcore people I’ve ever met. If he says someone is a good researcher, that counts for A LOT with anyone who knows his standards. There is no amount of stuff on a resume that could outweigh the word of someone like that.
cvwright··on Cultural Evolution of Cooperation Among LLM Agents
Sounds like a Mr Bean skit
cvwright··on The 70% problem: Hard truths about AI-assisted coding
I think of AI like a very eager and bright 20 yr old intern who’s really into whatever tech I’m trying to learn.

Good knowledge of facts, willing to give anything a try, but not much wisdom.

cvwright··on Show HN: Open-source private home security camera system (end-to-end encryption)
I’m not sure that 1) is such a win for MLS here.

If I lose my phone, I want to get all my security footage back by entering my passphrase etc on my new phone.

In other words, I want the “encrypted cloud storage” security model from [1], not the encrypted messaging security model from Signal etc.

cvwright··on An oral history of "We Built This City," the worst song of all time (2016)
“Last Christmas” is definitely the worst. By far.
cvwright··on Colorado scrambles to change voting-system passwords after accidental leak
I have a PhD in CS, with peer reviewed publications on using cryptography, and all I learned in my studies is that it’s practically impossible to build a secure voting machine.

I even took a class from a professor who regularly testified to congress on the topic.

Paper ballots all the way.

cvwright··on X Algorithm Feeds Users Political Content Whether They Want It or Not
They have done this since forever, even under the previous ownership. The “flavor” of the political content was different then, but it’s always been annoying. One of the worst features of the site.
cvwright··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
This depends entirely on the neighbors
cvwright··on Software Engineer Pay Heatmap Across the US
Lots of techies out in Bend though
cvwright··on California bans legacy admissions at private universities
Many years ago, I was a grad TA at a school that is now top 10 in the US. Based on that experience, I think everyone paying full freight at these schools is buying their grades. It was de facto impossible to fail any student for cheating, or to punish them in any real way.

Too bad too, since the half of undergrads who weren’t cheaters were the nicest, brightest, salt-of-the-earth people.

cvwright··on New York Times tech workers union votes to authorize a strike
I think the uncomfortable question for many here is, why should the SWE at Google get paid any more than the SWE at the NY Times?
cvwright··on For those who hear voices, the ‘broken brain’ explanation is harmful
The world is not just stuff!
cvwright··on Show HN: Skip – Build native iOS and Android apps from a single Swift codebase
The problem with this perspective is that iOS is where the money is. Almost ALL the money.

So if western B2C companies have to pick just one platform to start with, it will almost always be iOS. This lets them then port that initial app to Android once they are established with western audiences, so they can also serve the (much larger, much less profitable) rest of the world.

cvwright··on Interview with Signal President Meredith Whittaker
Yeah we definitely wouldn’t want them chasing fads. Like, say, crypto currencies for example.

cvwright··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
Especially when we import millions of low-skill / no-skill people every year to compete with the poor people who were born here.

Works great for the upper classes - keeps the price down for those fancy Michelin dinners.

cvwright··on Emmanuel Macron on the Arrest of Pavel Durov
And yet they had no problem springing into action to have him arrested on a weekend. Funny how that works.
cvwright··on You are not dumb, you just lack the prerequisites
Probably more that lots of kids will try super hard to be good at sports. Being good at school carries a certain level of stigma and lots of kids who could be “smart” choose to slack instead.
cvwright··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
US Air buying American Airlines just to become American Airlines, is one of my (least) favorites
cvwright··on FUTO
Clearly it's the E[l|r]on problem now
cvwright··on CockroachDB license change
Then why do you care? If nobody is going to fork it anyway, what’s the benefit of being open source from the beginning?
