cvburgess··on Ask HN: Advice on regaining passion at work
It may sound cliche, but take a vacation. A disconnected, no social media, no email, minimal tech vacation. I find that completely tuning out recharges me and after a little while (usually 4 days) the distance from all things tech makes the "itch" come back and my heart a little fonder. I think if you try to work on side projects and have a constant negative self-perception, you won't be motivated to do much at all - not just program.
cvburgess··on Australian traffic button pushes beautiful design
This is a spam link to a NSFW site - do not click.
cvburgess··on Instapaper is joining Pinterest
I really like http://raindrop.io - its pretty, easy, and has a mobile app / chrome extension.
cvburgess··on LGTM is a simple pull request approval system for GitHub
Is this type of functionality planned for an official GitHub feature? Gitlab and Bitbucket both incorporate some type of similar functionality already...
cvburgess··on iOS Dev Tools
I personally like Github Desktop for basic operations, it supports any GIT repo, not just GitHub. https://desktop.github.com
cvburgess··on Lyft Carpool: A New Way to Commute
Yes they did, the founder of Lyft gave a speech at SXSW last year on the evolution of Zimride => Lyft. He said that "the focus of Lyft would continue to be and always has been reducing the number of empty seats on the road." (paraphrasing)
cvburgess··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
Here's one of many examples I found on the first page of Google.

cvburgess··on Apple Letter on iPhone Security Draws Muted Tech Industry Response
They effectively sell user information by way of allowing their customers to target individuals for a price. They aren't directly selling the data itself but they are selling a service that is an extension of that data. I think the semantics are negligible. They make money selling [ads based on] user data.
cvburgess··on Deco Software – React Native IDE
Is there a reason you aren't using NPM - I haven't done much react native development, is NPM not the go-to registry?
cvburgess··on Ask HN: Do you need a new Issue Tracking and Project Management tool?
I have seen that in smaller companies - especially startups. The closer I get to a large, enterprise environment, the more the PO resembles a sales person who is in meetings all day. Not actively using any PM tooling.
cvburgess··on Ask HN: Do you need a new Issue Tracking and Project Management tool?
I think it depends on who you ask.

Developers I know typically like something simple, flat, and issue-focused. Think GH issues.

PMs tend to want more feature rich tools with advanced reporting and customizable views. Think salesforce.

Product owners (I haven't had many) just want to know "are we there yet?" and will rarely open any tool or learn how they work - they just badger the PM via email or in meetings.

My problem isn't that there aren't tools that I like, its that there aren't a lot of tools that can be "all things to all people."

If a tool was built on something simple (GH Issues) and added a layer of complexity on top for PMs I think you'd have a winner. Waffle (waffle.io) is going in that direction, though they aren't heavy in the PM tooling area yet(?)

cvburgess··on Introducing Block Decorations
I've never done it, but id assume the effort to do a rewrite would be tremendous.
cvburgess··on Alphabet Becomes the Most Valuable Public Company in the World
As an American I find it actually very disappointing. We have the wealthiest, most powerful companies, and a government that threatens to shutdown every year. Many citizens can't afford healthcare and basic necessities, and yet we have companies with billions of dollars tucked away over seas.
cvburgess··on Progressive Versioning
The MAJOR number in semantic versioning, and many versioning schemes is used to signify the breaking of backwards compatibility. It doesn't mean "major new feature", think of it more as "major reworking of something you may rely on". The MINOR is used to signify new features that won't break anything in the process.
cvburgess··on Debugging Node.js in Production
Netflix is a large supporter and active contributor (perhaps the most active?) to Restify, so it really isn't that surprising when you think about it.
cvburgess··on Patronizing Passwords
But most sites let you "trust this device" once you've done 2FA - passwordless doesn't have that option from what I can tell. Also, 2FA is an extra, optional layer for most users. They can choose if they want the extra hassle in exchange for security. Passwordless gives you no such option, you have to switch apps, period.
cvburgess··on Habits of a Happy Node Hacker
The article suggests using node-foreman (#6); can someone explain the advantage of Procfile-based environment management? I read the docs and didn't see anything that couldn't be handled by a simple config.json or some environment variables.
cvburgess··on Twitter Sees 6% Increase in “Like” Activity After First Week of Hearts
I never understood the "bookmarking" feature that was favoriting. Hearts/likes/kudos are pretty universally accepted as a way of showing support without having to engage with a comment/response. This was long overdo IMO.
cvburgess··on Show HN: A cleaner alternative to the “Fork Me on GitHub” ribbon
I like these a lot, kudos to the author for a clean design that matches most modern UIs!
cvburgess··on Mattermost 1.0 released – open-source Slack alternative
I'm really hoping they charge for a hosted option? It would make sense.
cvburgess··on LogMeIn acquires Lastpass
Seconded, a really amazing UI and UX with security at the forefront. Not to mention the apps are updated often to take advantage of the latest iOS and OS X features (they support other platforms but I don't use those apps).
cvburgess··on 62% of Americans Have Under $1,000 in Savings, Survey Finds
Reposting my comment to another commenter:

A 40 is not liquid - if something happens and you need money tomorrow yo don't have immediate access to those funds. There may also be heavy fees if you pull funds out before you are 60.

cvburgess··on 62% of Americans Have Under $1,000 in Savings, Survey Finds
Those accounts that you mention are not liquid - if something happens and you need money tomorrow yo don't have immediate access to those funds. Also, sot retirement accounts levy fees if you pull funds out before you are 60.
cvburgess··on Node v4.1.0
A lot of libraries have been following the iojs track (v1, v2, v3) so many libraries are already in place to support v4 out of the box. The best way to know though is test your specific packages in a dev branch or sandbox environment and see what breaks - tests help automate this if you have them!
cvburgess··on Polyfills as a Service
This is a really neat idea... when paired with the Express middleware and Babel, you could have a pretty clean ES6 app with modern browser features and still have it work on older browsers.
cvburgess··on Check out my new app
Looks great!

Two suggestions:

1.) Make this a Show HN, and change the link to the iTunes web page, not a deep link into iTunes (annoying)

2.) Remove the "endorsed by Apple" - or explain what you mean. It seems strange and might get you in trouble with Apple... no fun.

cvburgess··on Introducing Improved Performance Dynos
Heroku has cheap, easy, and performant hosting that is ideal for prototyping and scaling out an early stage company. It gets more expensive as you get "big" and it seems most of the posts as of late related to databases, scaling, and containerization have focused on building for "big". Heroku "just works" and while that is fantastic for many, the interesting stuff that hits the front page is often the "cooler" stuff that takes a lot more engineering to roll out. I think Heroku and PaaS tools in general have become the new "normal" and people rarely discuss "normal" on a news site. ( Just my observations over the years )
cvburgess··on Show HN: Fortune.js – High-level I/O for web applications
Has anyone used fortune? I saw this a long time ago when i dug through the Ember.js docs it mentioned this, but I never dug too deep into it.
cvburgess··on Uber Drivers Deemed Employees by California Labor Commission
Uber customers are paying the driver for a service, AirBnB customers are renting an asset - they break down differently from my understanding of the law but IANAL
cvburgess··on Just how open will Apple allow Swift to be?
I think they even said in the keynote that they would be accepting community changes ("pull requests" in GitHub terms), so I'm not sure why the article doesn't have any reference to what was stated by Apple officially. Seems like FUD to me, but I could be wrong.
