cushpush··on Ask HN: What are the most amazing algorithms?
merge sort is like how lee sedol beat Google's DeepGo that one game, in reverse.

It's a shock until Blade Runner
cushpush··on Ask HN: Want to donate cloud credits for AI safety research?
Keep up the good work. Any place I can read your findings or surmisals?
cushpush··on Ask HN: What are the most amazing algorithms?
There's a youtube channel called Two Minute Papers, my latest favorite algorithms have to do with fluid simulation and generative near-fit images for beaches that don't exist. I'm not sure what your question is, protein folding is pretty amazing. So is XOR.
cushpush··on Chegg stock sinks after CEO says ChatGPT hurt growth
is this because ChatGPT effectively replaces their product
cushpush··on Ask HN: Resources for older developers?
I like to think we ride the same mental wave at times
cushpush··on Ask HN: Resources for older developers?
it sounds like it's gotta be catered to your workflow. i wonder what this is like, i work out of sketch books and paper+pen a lot. project context seems like a good thing to be able to preserve and replicate between the various frames. elon mentioned that context switching was one of the more costly plays
cushpush··on Show HN: Moderator Mayhem, a game about the difficulties of content moderation
It's probably more of a spectrum of offensive to inoffensive, so the binary choice between permissible and not is going to vary depending on context. Maybe it could be a slider with "acceptable ranges" depending on platform? For example, I think 4chan would not mind most of these posts. But GlobalSocialNet might have some problems with some.

This to me highlights the many delights of freedom of speech. You can choose what level of chaos to permit. To enforce a global ethic this way seems kinda snooty.
cushpush··on Place mushrooms in sunlight to get your vitamin D (2012)
I actually appreciate his wealth of knowledge (Paul Stamets) and his presentation of facts, often I learn a lot and his holistic approach is something that most universities would find impossible to implement as curricula. While not a classically-trained scientist, he is an erudite scholar of the highest caliber and his continual contributions to science and furthering our understanding of the natural world more closely correlates to the inceptive motivations of Science than would be found in the modern day tower of ivory.

If we're gonna use French prefixes, can we just go with french all the way? En-merdification maybe?
cushpush··on Ask HN: How do you muster up the energy to study/do stuff after work?
You can always train yourself to get up very early. My friend who is 39 wakes up at 4 am and works until noon. He calls me at 1:30p to chill. So, just for some perspective, maybe you can nudge your wakefulness up a couple hours and be about your particular grind daily before your fixed schedule kicks in. It's not easy to get an edge over the system, you have to be very creative and diligently persistent. There are some insane people on YouTube I can refer you to if who have provided me with glimpses into insane levels of motivation. The taste of freedom is so sweet, one will do what it takes to achieve it. You know what I mean? Your schedule is fixed now, but if you double-down and have 2 fixed schedules one day you should be schedule-less. At least, that's the goal. But of course, not always easy or straightforward. And so, you can hear the wise advice of my grandmother to my father, who said "I'll work now and stack gold and enjoy myself later," and she said "you gotta work a little and live a little, in tandem." So maybe that is a wiser way than the way I'm going, burning the candle at both ends, but I thought I should give you my 2cents since this is a forum for generative pre-trained entrepreneurs. GPE

cushpush··on Clarence Thomas Had a Child in Private School. Harlan Crow Paid the Tuition
In theory Nancy Pelosi is still one of the greatest stock brokers of all time. If we banned Senate insider stock trading, would her picks change dramatically? Would that imply anything unsavory?

an authenticity checkmark for email? simple yet effective. wow it took us way too long to arrive at this answer (laugh+cry)
cushpush··on Ask HN: How do you muster up the energy to study/do stuff after work?
Pardon me sometimes I talk in very shorthand speak for the web -- I mean to say that everyone's day can be sliced into various segments, for me my "brightest slice" is typically a 4-6 hour interval that occurs shortly after I wake up, but sometimes I get into it later in the day. If you can use this "brightest slice" for your own company, or solo projects, those can become a passive income stream eventually. Lots of work does not require my "brightest slice" so I allocate accordingly.
cushpush··on FDA Finalizes Rule to Deregulate Hearing Aids
Plans for open-source hearing aids have also been developed and released, like happened on HN a few years ago (amazing work by the gentleman @zdw) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20604566. So, I think like someone else said, this is gov't catching up to the fact that market alternatives exist and are undercutting an industry that has celebrated regulatory shielding for a long time. Really, the hardware is less complex as time goes on, right? It makes sense that low-cost alternatives will bring quality up for consumers and prices down for consumers. Question, Hearing aids are considered medical gear and therefore the regulation?
cushpush··on Ask HN: How do you muster up the energy to study/do stuff after work?
need to use the brightest slice of your day for things that will feed you after your job might not

Yes on the sarcasm, you bring up a great point. True "innovation" would take into account the optimal outcome, but sometimes that has to be legislated in. As in many industries where regulation improves outcomes for society.
cushpush··on Heavy marijuana use increases schizophrenia in men, study finds
I think also combustion of materials leads to more carcinogen intake. Vaporization of material is much safer, and I would like to see studies on this.
cushpush··on Ask HN: Foundational Papers in AI
Asking my 3rd brain hemisphere, chatGPT, yielded the following very useful result:

LLM typically refers to "Large Language Models," which are a type of artificial intelligence model that uses deep learning techniques to analyze and understand natural language.

Here are some foundational papers in AI that may be helpful for understanding the development of LLMs:

"A Few Useful Things to Know About Machine Learning" by Pedro Domingos (2012) This paper provides an introduction to the fundamentals of machine learning, which is a crucial component of LLM development. "Natural Language Processing (almost) from Scratch" by Ronan Collobert and Jason Weston (2008)

This paper presents a deep learning architecture for natural language processing tasks, which laid the foundation for many subsequent LLM models. "Efficient Estimation of Word Representations in Vector Space" by Tomas Mikolov, et al. (2013)

This paper introduces the Word2Vec algorithm, which is a widely-used method for generating word embeddings that can be used in LLM models. "Attention Is All You Need" by Ashish Vaswani, et al. (2017) This paper presents the Transformer architecture, which is a type of neural network that has been used in many successful LLM models, including BERT and GPT.

"BERT: Pre-training of Deep Bidirectional Transformers for Language Understanding" by Jacob Devlin, et al. (2018) This paper describes the development of BERT, which is a pre-trained LLM that has achieved state-of-the-art performance on many natural language processing tasks.

"Language Models are Few-Shot Learners" by Tom B. Brown, et al. (2020) This paper presents the GPT-3 LLM, which is one of the largest and most powerful language models developed to date, and demonstrates its ability to perform well on a wide range of tasks with only a few examples.

cushpush··on Ask HN: Help me name my 'startup'?
Oh, i like the idea, i think you need cooperation from networks, who would want a cut of proceeds. nameshift, nameblaze, name&board, cognomen (latin for last name), nameholdr, namekeepr, handleholder (like candleholder but with an h), reservaname, keepaname, ownaname, veritithe (verity + tithing), snapnickname, nicksnatch, namegame, namelane. Nameholdr keeps coming back to mind as I conjure more from the depths.

Strong arguments, ideally legislation would ensure plastics break down and if not, some sort of breakdown cost incorporated into the goods. But that stifles industry and innovation. Maybe we can have incentives for packaging that breaks down, I believe the technology exists at this point in time.
