There's consequences.

Deplatforming works. A few people follow to other sites, but most don't. It also becomes harder to attract new cultists if one is shut out of major services.

cultus··on Facebook Indefinitely Suspends Trump
The ANTIFA CEO is sitting in his fortified command center underneath the Appalachian Mountains as we speak, cackling and torturing a Trump supporter to death for not calling xir by the proper pronouns. Our joke of a liberal government is doing nothing to eliminate this dangerous threat to our guns and precious, precious strip malls.
cultus··on Infosec implications of the US Capitol physical breach
Luckily the difference in response is absolutely not emblematic of any serious structural issues in American policing, and we can all move on from this with no real reforms.
cultus··on Infosec implications of the US Capitol physical breach
You don't think that the US government should be able to defend itself? That's an interesting opinion.
cultus··on Facebook Indefinitely Suspends Trump
Yeah I live a few blocks away from where where ANTIFA was supposedly terrorizing and burning. The only danger to the public was the tear gas the police indiscriminately used and drifted into apartments and retirement homes. You are full of it.

I thought right-wingers respected private property rights? Surely you don't hold contradictory and illogical opinions, because the right also prides itself on "facts" and "logic?" Is this not true?
cultus··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
The facts of the war in Iraq were objectively bad. Should the media have hidden this to avoid accusations of bias? The problem is that the same critical coverage did not continue for Obama. Keep in mind too that all major outlets cheered the lead-up and start of the war - it's a big money spinner after all.

cultus··on US doctor forgives $650k in medical bills for cancer patients
The incentives are all wrong. Tests are money spinners, so hospitals and clinics push them hard. Over-testing is usually associated with worse health outcomes. For example, nearly anyone who gets a full body scan has a few suspicious looking blobs. It's almost always nothing, but it results in unnecessary treatment or exploratory surgery while not actually saving many lives.
cultus··on US doctor forgives $650k in medical bills for cancer patients
It's so heartbreaking to see people who are very sick or even dying have to stress about bills. It's just not something a moral society does. It's not just mental, cortisol really knocks down your immune system.
cultus··on Brexit stops Brooks England sales of ‘Made in Britain’ saddles to UK shoppers
To me it's an argument that there isn't enough democracy. Brexit would never had happened if the British political class (including Labour and libdems) were not totally hostile to the interests of the British working class over a period of several decades. When a government isn't responsive to the people, bad stuff happens.
cultus··on Brexit stops Brooks England sales of ‘Made in Britain’ saddles to UK shoppers
I'll just drop in here to say that as a massive cycling enthusiast and former racer,

BUY A BROOKS SADDLE!

They are the best bike saddle I've ever ridden. I don't get sore or chafe even on 5+ hour rids Sure, they weigh 2 lbs instead of 10 ounces, but that just doesn't matter for 99.8% of cyclists. Since it is leather, the saddle breaks in to your particular nether regions just like a boot or baseball gloves.

cultus··on A group of Google workers have announced plans to unionize
It's neat that you are in such a position, but many aren't.
cultus··on Most of what you read on the internet is written by insane people (2018)
Why does that bother you so much? Language changes to fit needs. Always has, always will.
cultus··on The Theory of Interstellar Trade (1978)
It's probably just that they wrote this for fun because I can't imagine anyone would fund it. Economists use a surprising amount of dry humor like that, I've noticed.

An old one:

Remember the unfortunate econometrician, who, in one of the major functions of his system, had to use a proxy for risk and a dummy* for sex.

cultus··on Uber will charge significantly more per trip as new Seattle law goes into effect
Birth rates go down when people are in a secure situation. The solution isn't to make having children hard through impoverishment. That increases birth rates further.

Besides, in the case of this Somalian man, in subsistence-oriented societies having more children is often economically advantageous.

cultus··on Uber will charge significantly more per trip as new Seattle law goes into effect
Yes, that is a moral problem that our society has.
cultus··on Uber will charge significantly more per trip as new Seattle law goes into effect
If we reduced having children to pure economic calculation, humanity would go extinct.
cultus··on Baltimore police lied about almost every aspect of its spy plane program
Sorry, but that's not a reliable source.
cultus··on Uber will charge significantly more per trip as new Seattle law goes into effect
Easy for you to say.
cultus··on Baltimore police lied about almost every aspect of its spy plane program
How do you know it does? The pro-surveillence side needs to put forth positive evidence. The precautionary principle is the only just, non-authoritarian option for situations like this. I know the targets are mostly in neighborhoods that you probably don't frequent, but those people have the same rights you do, and that includes the right to reasonable privacy.
cultus··on Baltimore police lied about almost every aspect of its spy plane program
Perhaps you need to change your news sources, because you have a very warped idea of how violent inner cities are. It's not the 1970's.
cultus··on GHC 9.0, supporting linear types
To add to other user's comments, linear types are useful for reasoning exactly about (some) imperative constructs, which is really, really hard to do with standard type systems. That's why reliably guaranteeing e.g. why it's still difficult to ensure safe and timely disposal of database connections in Haskell (maybe not now) or Scala, despite their powerful type systems.

There's many other such modal type systems/logics used for other special purposes like temporal logic.

cultus··on Vaccines Are the Safest Medical Procedure We Have. Make Your Wager Wisely
Most people who become seriously ill from vaccines have previously existing conditions as well. That's totally irrelevant here.
cultus··on Vaccines Are the Safest Medical Procedure We Have. Make Your Wager Wisely
I was seeing a specialist once who was being shadowed by two med students on rotation, and the doctor started talking about chemtrails. The look on the med students' faces when he started going into that...

Med school requires good analytical smarts and an excellent ability to retain information, but I'm quite convinced at this point that raw analyical ability has almost nothing to do with the ability to think critically to avoid insane beliefs. It's just not something that humans come built-in with.

cultus··on New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Reject Recommendation to Cut Sugar, Alcohol Intake
To be fair, in the specific case of tomatoes, the more it's cooked/reduced, the more bioavailable many of its nutrients are. Tomato paste is just tomatoes. Usually these kinds of pizzas have tons of sugar in the sauce, though.
cultus··on New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Reject Recommendation to Cut Sugar, Alcohol Intake
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but there's plenty of evidence that they depend on these consumers, and they are certainly aware of them because alcohol companies have been known to engage in marketing activities. This is a broad overview:

https://www.recoveryanswers.org/research-post/alcohol-sales-...

As you say, it is completely predictable that beverage companies would adapt to a Pareto-like distribution of consumption. However, unlike for things like books or outdoor equipment, adapting to a Pareto distribution here means that a company is intentionally profiting from addiction. This is an absolutely huge negative externality in terms of the social , health, and economic harm that alcohol addiction causes.

cultus··on Grenfell Tower inquiry: key things we’ve learned this year
Anglo law not historically having a concept of personal property...

That's a new one for me.

The US only protects property rights of some. Read up on asset forfeitures in the US. Police can seize cash on you with only "reasonable suspicion" with no conviction required.

cultus··on How a janitor at Frito-Lay invented Flamin' Hot Cheetos (2017)
It seems like these feel-good stories about benevolent capitalists get a little less traction now, although perhaps not in forums populated by the labor aristocracy.
