culot··on How ‘Baldur’s Gate’ Saved the Computer RPG
The camera angles on the D:OS 1 really irked me somehow.

The only one I've played in the last like decade+ that gave me that old school RPG vibe, that felt wondrous like when I was a teen in the '90s discovering PC gaming, has been Wasteland II. Though the camera angles on that annoyed me even worse than D:OS!

culot··on K-Cup creator John Sylvan regrets inventing Keurig coffee pod system
> Coffee powder needs to be kept in a sealed container to be 'fresh'

There's no shortage of those sealed containers. If someone has a Keurig machine, and is using those pods, then they also have a refrigerator and are able to obtain containers, which are inexpensive.

There is no real argument for keurig cups other than convenience.

Is that convenience worth all of the waste? Should people be able to choose to generate such waste for something so trivial? Should be firms be allowed to sell waste-generators like Keurig? If Keurig is not responsible for the mountains of damage done, and the consumers are not responsible, then where does the buck stop?

This area is ripe for regulation and well overdue.

culot··on Browsers
I think Google will continue to have a headlock on the browser market via the forced-inclusion of Chrome (and the other 20 non-removable apps of theirs they force on you) on most all Android devices -- like Microsoft once had with IE on Windows. Mobile is the market, most people don't even own desktop computers nowadays.
culot··on Browsers
Those messages don't appear for me in Firefox, but they do when using Edge. Clicking 'no thanks' sometimes dismisses them, however sometimes they come back at next load.

My family's modified rule was the ability to play off of used multiplier tiles, leading to fun with super high scores. Always a thrill to have a word take up one entire edge of the board while reaping the extra multiplier(s).
culot··on YouTube Knows How to Stop Serving Toxic Videos
I think the problem lies with the determination of what is and isn't objectionable or dangerous. Who decides? Tech megacorps?

There is plenty of content that we can all agree on being dangerous or worthy of banning, but there is plenty that is not settled, plenty that can blow in different directions with each fresh gust of the political winds.

Should this be handled legally instead, so citizens have recourse?

What happens if the consensus on approved/banned content among the censors is itself dangerous or at odds with reality?

Who is in control of the censorship and what is being censored, what is to be censored, at the biggest, most influential social media venues is an issue that cannot simply be waived away as 'corporate discretion'.

How long until we are all couching our Chinese social credit?

culot··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2018?
If you've not done so already, peep Atwood's 'Maddaddam' trilogy. Those are a lot of fun and fairly prescient.
culot··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2018?
Lierre Keith is indeed a powerful writer; that's a fascinating read.

culot··on Netflix’s biggest competition isn’t sleep, it’s YouTube
For Android there is the Vanced Youtube app, and you can always dump all Google ads in a hole via Adguard or Blokada.
culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
I've invested a lot of time trying to find solutions in that manner and have always ended up with hacky results, usually hideous as well. There is no cohesive solution for that Android that I've been able to find.
culot··on Do I really need to get out the soldering-iron again?
I think that's what Schiit specializes in.
culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
That's still a thing, it's just the design of widgets from app to app is disparate, usually visually clashing if multiple widgets are used. Not as clean and uniform as Windows Phone tiles.

There is an Android launcher (launcher 10, i think) that offers tiles, and some of them even live tiles. It's okay, not quite the same slick experience though.

culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
It turns out my scrolling lag and rendering issues disappear when I disable smooth-scrolling. Simple fix. :)
culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Apparently load time is 1.5-2 seconds. I swear it often feels slower than that. shrugs That's not bad.

The rendering corruption/lag issue with scrolling only happens while scrolling a message while in split-pane view, not when the message is maximized in its own tab.

culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Dark mode was nice as well. To toggle from light/dark and have alnost every app follow suit was luxurious. On Android it's such a hodgepodge of light and dark, an affront to the eyes at times.

Also being able to select text from most anywhere was useful.

culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Its search is excellent, but the load time of the program itself, of emails, is very slow for me, on both Windows and Linux. Then the rendering! As I scroll an email it struggles to render the content and lags behind. Same problems on release, beta, and nightly. Hmm.
culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Absolutely! I use Nano, and while it's okay, it's silly non-standard GUI and shortcut key combos are a mess. Something like MS DOS Edit or Borland TC++ IDE for DOS would be killer for Windows console - also for Linux as well, which has a similar problem of only bizarrely-designed editors available.
culot··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
Windyws Phone's tile setup is still the best home screen setup for mobile. As I peep at my Android home with pretty wallpaper with acres of bhank space and uninformative icons, I pine for the informative, intelligent WP tiles.

Ms Image Composer was unbeatable for digital and web stuff back then. Photoshop was rather clumsy in comparison.

As for email clients, I do keep wondering how Thunderbird can be so slow, how its rendering system can be so shite.

culot··on LG Releases Gram 17 Laptop: An Ultra-Thin Notebook with a 17.3in Display
I keep hoping they bring that back for an X1 Extreme successor. That is where that keyboard truly belonged.
culot··on LG Releases Gram 17 Laptop: An Ultra-Thin Notebook with a 17.3in Display
I think the closest tenkeyless laptop to that is the newer ThinkPad X1 Extreme models. 15", all the high end goodies, pretty much best keyboard by far of any laptop - with no numpad.

Ideally I would love a 17" version with desktop standard tenkeyless layout, with track point, too. Having special proprietary layouts for laptop systems is abhorrent.

culot··on LG Releases Gram 17 Laptop: An Ultra-Thin Notebook with a 17.3in Display
Too bad about the keyboard. That is the weakest part of the system. With that footprint I wish they'd have used a typical tenkeyless desktop layout, instead of the cramped and crippled numpad layout.

Not only are the arrow keys halved but no dedicated hone, end, page up/down keys.

I love the 16:10 dearly, but that keyboard is going to be maddening to anyone but the most casual media consumer. That is true of almost every laptop though, keyboards are typically afterthoughts.

culot··on Tumblr’s anti-porn algorithm is flagging basically everything as NSFW
Didn't they just have their app removed from Google's Play Store for the presence child porn on their platform? I think the point might be that they cannot reasonably be expected police their platform to determine what porn is and is not acceptable. Surely there is going to be a lot of porn posted that is crazy unacceptable, and I'm sure they don't want to have to sift through it all to discern what is what.

I am actually surprised porn is a big thing they are known for, considering their platform is aimed at kids/adolescents?

culot··on Why Do Hospitals Hate Sleep So Much?
I think it is absolutely standard in that situation to at least take vitals every couple/few hours, no way around it. It's annoying to be woken up so often, but it's done for good reasons.
culot··on The Tranish Inquisition []
Never mind, that article about the routine, rampant, targeted censorship and harassment by Silicon Valley's most powerful players has been deleted, and the author has been banned from both Medium and Twitter. Sad, terrifying irony.
culot··on Three academics are launching a new journal for arguments to be made anonymously
There are legitimate topics that can jeopardize ones career or even personal safety if you broach them publicly. For example I think stating the equations 'woman == human female' or 'lesbian == female homosexual' has gotten a lot of people in trouble in recent years. Even on many social media platforms and content management platforms that's bound to get you banned.

> silenced rather than defeated

No-platforming exists though, many people are silenced. Some people do need safe cover, as internet mobs can do real damage, as internet mobs can turn into IRL abuse even.

In the last decade there has developed a real culture of fear surrounding woke and identity politics. Lots of people quake at the prospect of committing wrongthink, performing wrongspeak, and instead push into the other direction via virtue signaling, to ward off potential attacks and keep their rightthink membership up to date.

At this point anonymity is definitely a necessary tool for so many people who would otherwise be exposed to varying levels of danger for speaking.
