cuddlyogre··on Reddit Will License Its Data to Train LLMs, We Made a FF Extension to Replace
I have a hard time sympathizing with people complaining that Reddit made it difficult to freely scrape the entire site to train AI. I also have zero empathy for Reddit that they are hopefully going to lose a large chunk of that data from users that don't like being treated as free labor.

With Reddit's history of editing the database directly to make a point at the expense of its users, who's to say they don't have the full history of a person's post and will just discard the posts changed by addons like this? Or if not revert the changes on the frontend, they just provide the full history to AI trainers?

cuddlyogre··on Biden's new student loan forgiveness erase up to $20k in interest for millions
I'm ok with that.
cuddlyogre··on Biden's new student loan forgiveness erase up to $20k in interest for millions
Honest question.

Why shouldn't people with a mortgage also receive a $20k relief?

cuddlyogre··on Lego price per part over the years
> I think LEGO has done a great marketing job here... never buy something that is not LEGO, it might be bad quality or scam.

I don't think that was LEGO. I think that was just the off brands being pretty university awful and people caught on.

I'm going through a bucket of loose parts right now, separating the off brands from the LEGO. There are at least 6 different brands in there. The difference is almost always obvious.

And when it's not and the part sneaks its way into my main collection, I can instantly tell when I use it because it either doesn't fit, or fits incorrectly.

cuddlyogre··on Star Trek: Borg – Remastered
Star Trek Bridge Commander is the pinnacle of not only Trek games but space games as a whole.
cuddlyogre··on VirtualBox KVM Public Release
I'd love a realistic alternative to virtualbox on Windows for running Debian as a development environment.

I've tried hypervisor but I can't get networking to work, and trying to set up another adapter gives me a bsod on every computer I try it on.

Wsl2 almost works, but I can't really use Intellij to its full capacity. I'm under the impression that GUI application support is coming so maybe that will change. I'd really love for this to work so I can learn docker, but virtualbox performance is non-existent when wsl is turned on.

Qemu feels incomplete or at least overly complicated compared to Virtualbox.

cuddlyogre··on Doorway effect
This was one of the reasons people hated the Windows 8 start screen. You go to access something while keeping what's on screen in your mind but the entire thing is now replaced with a sea of icons and text on a blue background. Such a drastic change in view has close to the effect that a power outage does.
cuddlyogre··on I accidentally Blender VSE
Awesome! I've used the vse pretty regularly for years and every time it gets an update I'm happy.
cuddlyogre··on How Lego Became the Apple of Toys (2015)
> Because it's extremely polished and looks miles better than the competition.

Disney's animation style is sterile and formulaic. It's to the point of uncanny valley and overacting.

There's something to be said about how animation with tiny imperfections and errors improves the experience. Your brain is more ready to accept that it's seeing something fake rather than something failing to be real.

cuddlyogre··on How Lego Became the Apple of Toys (2015)
You definitely pay for quality too.

Chinese building blocks vary wildly in terms of clutch power and overall precision. But if all you're looking for is something to display and not ever touch again, it's probably the best way to go.

cuddlyogre··on How Lego Became the Apple of Toys (2015)
Technic may have been more to your liking.
cuddlyogre··on The Potent Pollution of Noise
The absolute void of interest to enforce the law is the problem here, not finding offenders.

I'm my area, all it would take is a cop to watch the main drag and start enforcing speed limits and state and local noise ordinances and it would stop. But they don't because they are not interested. In part because they or their children partake in the hobby of harassing people in their homes a mile and a half away. Another part is its easier to ticket people late for work because they won't run like the noise makers do.

We're also back to table layouts with grid, albeit a lot more usable this time around.
cuddlyogre··on Fake Trees: Using Indents for Simpler UIs
Thank you for explaining it. I'm curious if it's just a bad implementation.
cuddlyogre··on Fake Trees: Using Indents for Simpler UIs
I maintain an old cms that stores the id of the parent, left sibling, and right sibling.

Making any changes to the order or grouping is wrought with peril because you never know if everything is going to be updated properly. When it isn't, it's an ordeal to correct.

Having a parent id and sort order is straightforward and about as simple as it gets. I really don't see why you'd need to do it any other way outside of a thought experiment.

cuddlyogre··on Firefox Sync actually works
They're not an multi-billion dollar ad company that can pay to make their browser the de facto default.
cuddlyogre··on Please don't use AI to get on the global leaderboard
And risk all of your work being owned by some entity you have no hopes of fighting against and being left with nothing to show for but an atrophied brain because you've offloaded all your thinking to a machine that doesn't belong to you and is not able to be audited.

What is to stop the owners of these ai systems from denying service to users for trying to make a product that competes with them? Or just straight up taking your work and using it themselves?

Why risk it?

cuddlyogre··on Please don't use AI to get on the global leaderboard
Offloading the use of your brain to proprietary and legally murky third party services that can deny you access for any reason whatsoever seems shortsided. What happens when you don't have access to these services and you find out you don't actually know how to do most of what you need to do?
cuddlyogre··on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 Plans for Wayland and Xorg Server
I find that comforting. I know it works and isn't going to be affected by what's trendy.

Fortunately, the source is available and if there is a need to make changes, that is entirely possible.

It's so bad, we have a dedicated email HTML person.

But it's not python. What if the user wants to write in python?
cuddlyogre··on Hyphens, minus, and dashes in Debian man pages
Gotta love smart punctuation.

Just yesterday, I had to fix a broken page because someone dared store a link tag in a word document, which helpfully and silently converted its quotes into smart quotes for the user.

I have a Ruby class that's whole purpose is to undo this kind of help in user provided text, but I missed a spot.

Thankfully, I've seen this happen a thousand times, so I knew what was happening. The user didn't though. And trying to explain why her quotes are the wrong kind of quotes would be impossible.

I cannot fathom the arrogance that drives the writer of any text processing application to silently replace what the user inputs, especially what they paste, with what they prefer instead. In the case of apple, they'll even delete other parts of the text if you disagree with their choice.

It's why I use notepad for almost everything and I avoid excel like the plague.

cuddlyogre··on Cave: A downloadable game engine for windows
Look at it from the point of view of someone that wants to make something without having to devote considerable time to learning a language as complicated as c++ or c# relative to python.

Everyone starts somewhere.

cuddlyogre··on Apple backs national right-to-repair bill, offering parts, manuals, and tools
If they were serious, they'd build a phone with a user replaceable battery. As in, my battery died while standing in line at the store and I can swap it out right there without tools and 6 hours and a lot of anxiety.
cuddlyogre··on Cockpit: Web-based graphical interface for servers
Your post implies there is something obviously better.

Genuine question.

What would that be? I'm always on the lookout for better tools.

cuddlyogre··on Anti-Anti-Adblocker uBlock filter to get rid of the annoying YouTube message
I have no faith that they won't soon start pushing ads on paying subscribers and start offering a premium plus subscription to be ad free again.
cuddlyogre··on Rails 7.1 Released
I've been a Rails dev for almost 10 years and the magic is the worst part. When something just works but I expected another hour of work, I feel like I've fallen into a trap. So, instead of just moving on, I look in the documentation for what just happened.

When you find yourself interacting with the magic parts, it is imperative that you comment what is going on so the next dev, which will probably be you, isn't also surprised.

cuddlyogre··on Flexbox Froggy
Today I learned about the order attribute, which would have come in handy this year.

Due to the magic of working primarily with perfectly functional but older projects, I only recently got the chance to start using flexbox. I immediately loved it far more than the float/clearfix headache I was used to.

The only thing that trips me up is the difference in naming with justify-content and align-items. I feel should both be (justify|align)-(THE SAME THING).

edit: Just got to 21. Looks like my confusion is common enough that there's a level about it.
