cuboidGoat··on Police forcing me to install Jingwang spyware app, how to minimize impact?
Unless any of us on here are personally representing nation states at a diplomatic level with roughly similar levels of violent shenanigans as each other, whataboutism really does not apply.

I've seen it referred to as the hypocrites favourite meme, and I am inclined to agree.

Also, China is hardly irrelevant, least of all here, a discussion thread about the technical issues surrounding state surveillance in China.

If you wanted them to stop, you'd have to change the law so as to disallow interpretation, as the law as written already codifies that the law can be critically interpreted by courts.

However I am not sure how that would even work, given the law is in language and language must be interpreted to elucidate meaning from it in the first place. Even if you fixed the first interpretation as sacrosanct, you would then have to interpret that interpretation each time.

cuboidGoat··on The Economies With the Most and Least Efficient Health Care
The vast majority of the large scale increase in human lifespan you can put down to improvements in medical knowledge. People used to get their teeth knocked out and replaced with wooden ones as a wedding present, the idea being that the lucky couple would then have less risk of being killed by a tooth infection before the age of 40, as was common.
cuboidGoat··on The Economies With the Most and Least Efficient Health Care
Could you indicate which health care systems you think are skewing the results in this manner? As it would seem to require keeping large numbers of the very elderly alive in comas while also not providing widespread elderly care, which seems an unlikely policy to pursue.

One thing about how laws work, is that they only become facts on the ground, so to speak, in the interpretation.

Courts change the followed interpretation of law all the time without amending the written law.

Often the written law only gets amended when the difference between the definition on paper and the definition in common practice can no longer be bent any further, after decades of plain conflict in language.

cuboidGoat··on Octopuses on MDMA reveal genetic evolution link to human social behaviors
Should a scientist accidentally fall into the mdma infused tank full of octupuses, I think the damage to their academic career could be substantial due to these kinds of childish attitudes. And that is the only reason all of the security footage is being encrypted and streamed to an offsite technology partner.

My theory is that Jobs' main task at Apple was to create theater to distract the press and business folk, so that Woz and the rest of Apple's technical staff could get some decent work done while nobody was looking.

Can't really fault you on any of that. Also, I do appreciate that I am carping from the sidelines here as I am not living in the US, so whatever works for you. My intent is only in passing commentary, not in trying to tell people what to do. It just looks a bit risky from the outside, is all.

Oh good point, cookers and heaters. Especially gas heaters.
cuboidGoat··on Amazon pulled an Apple on the smart home
All cooker controls should be timers.

I never want to turn on any part of the cooker for ever and ideally this should not be an option available to me when tired.

There are backpack nukes specifically designed for individuals to carry, like the B-54. If your legal cutoff was 'designed for a single person to carry', they would be included as legal.

'Arms', in the general sense, is up to and including nukes though.

Not your own one. Jefferson did get his wish granted in some ways however. Possibly by a malignant genie with a keen sense of irony.

“political speech is forbidden in the dorms”

That sounds a bit political. When the supervisor said this, were they inside or outside of the dorms?

cuboidGoat··on Octopuses on MDMA reveal genetic evolution link to human social behaviors
It says so;

Dölen designed an experiment with three connected water chambers: one empty, one with a plastic action figure under a cage and one with a female or male laboratory-bred octopus under a cage.

Four male and female octopuses were exposed to MDMA by putting them into a beaker containing a liquefied version of the drug, which is absorbed by the octopuses through their gills. Then, they were placed in the experimental chambers for 30 minutes. All four tended to spend more time in the chamber where a male octopus was caged than the other two chambers.

"It's not just quantitatively more time, but qualitative. They tended to hug the cage and put their mouth parts on the cage," says Dölen. "This is very similar to how humans react to MDMA; they touch each other frequently."

Under normal conditions, without MDMA, five male and female octopuses avoided only male, caged octopuses.

Personally, I think they should extend the experiment to see what effect a stack of underwater transducers emitting a structured arrangement of audio signals combined with rapidly changing patterns of lighting, would have on the octopus behaviour.

Also, we are writing modern english, not ancient latin or greek, so the anglicanised form is fine anyway, as it isn't a sudden neologism looking to find widespread use. Rather it is the common natural pluralisation of octopus in english.

Probably the least interesting part of the entire article, but if you want to go there -

"Although it is often supposed that octopi is the ‘correct’ plural of octopus, and it has been in use for longer than the usual Anglicized plural octopuses, it in fact originates as an error. Octopus is not a simple Latin word of the second declension, but a Latinized form of the Greek word oktopous, and its ‘correct’ plural would logically be octopodes."

cuboidGoat··on Motorola Razr V3 Cellphone: The trend-setter that shouldn't have existed
>“The scale of the hit of RAZR is hard to comprehend. Charles Dunstone of Carphone Warehouse ordered a quarter of a million in pink. We thought he was mad, this was a third of the global projected sales. He wanted this crazy volume of the “boys” phone to sell to girls in the UK. We gave him exclusivity on the pink colour. When he sold 3 million we bought the non-UK rights back.”

Reading this makes me wince at the monoculture. I can imagine the meetings; "You mean women are a major part of the mobile phone market? And they spend money on high quality design? And some men like pink too? Oh, and you are saying some women don't? Here, let me write this down, this stuff is out there."

cuboidGoat··on Hurricane Maria Killed as Many American Citizens as 9/11 Did
Deaths through weather and other natural disasters can scale perfectly fine, due to the scaling up of interlinked dependencies that are then run with minimum overhead. Puerto Rico was a Wexelblat disaster, through and through.

I thought they ended up doing that because the bodies were piling up uncounted and the governor admitted that that the civilian infrastructure required to keep track of the dead had itself failed and so asked for outside help from academics on the mainland. They didn't go with the highest academic figure either.

If they were actually trying for high figures, as you suggest, why not go with the Harvard study placing it at around 4600 dead?

A third of the 100 most viewed US newspapers have shuttered themselves to the EU, however this mass blocking has not seemingly been the norm for newspapers or other businesses in other markets outside the EU, or noticeably stopped any businesses within it from running websites.

What makes US news media companies so fragile when faced with this particular piece of EU legislation, compared to everyone else in the world, that they would rather chuck away eyeballs for their advertisers than deal with it?

Tell me about it. That point when you realise that fiction and comedy really are not exaggerating all that much, if at all.

Theranos is an example of commercial dishonesty leading to the top of political power and even snares people such as Mattis, who is possibly the only individual in the current US executive with any kind of reputation for being honest.

And the apparent message from that debacle isn't; "be honest", rather it is; "being dishonest nets billions, try not to get caught though".

Looking around the world, lying seems to have been redefined as; "a perfectly reasonable business strategy".

One of the biggest shocks I had going from childhood to adulthood was the sudden flip between people telling you that you have to be honest and the people now telling you to stop being honest. And the people who had previously told you that you must be honest, they tell you "oh yes, that's work", when you go back to ask them what you should do given you are being instructed by the people who pay your wages that you now have to lie.

I do not like defining myself with '-ists'. Instead I will generally refer to the '-ism' and point out where I agree and where I differ.

I have found this position has the side-effect of being an easy way to spot who is just playing team sports with philosophies. They are the folk who get really angry with people who agree with them on specifics, purely for not using a subject label self-referentially.
