cubancigar11··on India's forgotten holocaust
Yes you are infantilizing Indians when you say 'since when is it a function of government to feed the hungry and clothe the naked', implying that Indians were hungary and naked before British came, or probably due to some reason that doesn't involve a direct role of British government, laying all the irresponsibility at door steps of famine stricken people. BULL-SH*T. And I am not going to copy-paste well articulated reasons here for you. Go read the next paragraph and preferabbly the whole article.

I mean, the article was published in 1908 - three decades prior to WW2 and emergence of welfare states in europe - and 100 years ago from today. Yet it is sufficient to refute you! Do I really need to show the triviality in whatever you are trying to debate? Well done creating the strawman of welfare states. And stop referring to systematic famines where millions died by calling it 'hungry naked irresponsible people'. Britain actively and systematically refused to take responsibility of its 'subjects', knowing full well what it implied in human costs, for the only reason that it didn't consider Indians human enough. Churchill is the poster boy of this colonial thinking. Ref.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Churchill#Indian_indep...

'In response to an urgent request by the Secretary of State for India, Leo Amery, and Viceroy of India, Wavell, to release food stocks for India, Churchill responded with a telegram to Wavell asking, if food was so scarce, "why Gandhi hadn't died yet."'

cubancigar11··on India's forgotten holocaust
Yes, holocaust is going to extreme. But mis-rule on India was extremely systematic and not just failure of a government. It is sad we cannot give that tragedy a name of its own.
cubancigar11··on India's forgotten holocaust
> Apparently, because it's the responsibility of Britain, Australia, and Canada to feed hungry Indians,

I am not sure if you are trolling or you are deliberately distorting the view. India was being ruled by Britain, Indians were paying more taxes (if somehow you think it was just tax and not outright looting) than any living or dead British has ever paid to the crown. Why shouldn't 'hungry Indians' expect to be fed? You do realize your bigotry is very visible when you refer to a famine by 'hungry people expect government to feed them', implying Indians were just lazy. Have you read the article I posted? Have you ever read any historical documents written _by the British themselves_ while the famine was going on?

"What is the cause of these famines... there seems to be no evidence that the rains fail worse now than they did a hundred years ago... rains have never failed over areas so extensive as to prevent the raising of enough food in the land to supply the needs of the entire population... Not because there was lack of food in the famine areas, brought by railways or otherwise within easy reach of all... the chief and fundamental cause has been and is... a poverty so severe and terrible that it keeps the majority of the entire population on the very verge of starvation even in years of greatest plenty, prevents them from laying up anything against times of extremity, and hence leaves them, when their crops fail, absolutely undone—with nothing between them and death...

And the people are growing poorer and poorer. The late Mr. William Digby, of London, long an Indian resident, in his recent book entitled "Prosperous" India, shows from official estimates and Parliamentary and Indian Blue Books, that, whereas the average daily income of the people of India in the year 1850 was estimated as four cents per person (a pittance on which one wonders that any human being can live), in 1882 it had fallen to three cents per person, and in 1900 actually to less than two cents per person.

What causes this awful and growing impoverishment of the Indian people? Said John Bright, "If a country be found possessing a most fertile soil, and capable of bearing every variety of production, and, notwithstanding, the people are in a state of extreme destitution and suffering, the chances are there is some fundamental error in the government of that country."

Seriously man, try to read the very next paragraph in the article.

cubancigar11··on India's forgotten holocaust
Dude, when a country attacks your country, you defend. That is not called 'fighting evil'. That is called survival. Fighting evil means attacking Germany because you got to know how evil Hitler is.
cubancigar11··on India's forgotten holocaust
WW2 wasn't fought because people saw evil in Hitler. I have heard that is what is taught in British schools, but that is not true. WW2 was a fight for survival and nothing else.
cubancigar11··on India's forgotten holocaust
FTFY: Churchill's 'policies' were supposedly intentionally "responsible" for the famine.

Link to actual wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengal_famine_of_1943#Governme... (the article has NPOV problems for more than a year now).

For the British apologists, here is the quote to give you some acquaintance with the subject of Britain induced famines:

"During the first eighty years of the nineteenth century, 18,000,000 of people perished of famine. In one year alone—the year when her late Majesty assumed the title of Empress—5,000,000 of the people in Southern India were starved to death. In the District of Bellary, with which I am personally acquainted,—a region twice the size of Wales,—one-fourth of the population perished in the famine of 1816-77."

"Suppose we divide the past century into quarters, or periods of twenty-five years each. In the first quarter there were five famines, with an estimated loss of life of 1,000,000. During the second quarter of the century there were two famines, with an estimated mortality of 500,000. During the third quarter there were six famines, with a recorded loss of life of 5,000,000. During the last quarter of the century, what? Eighteen famines, with an estimated mortality reaching the awful totals of from 15,000,000 to 26,000,000. And this does not include the many more millions (over 6,000,000 in a single year) barely kept alive by government doles."

- From an article printed back in 1908 (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1908/10/the-new-...). The actual article is much more detailed and better written. And it has less reason to view history from distorted mirrors than we have 110 years later.

The reason Churchill was different from Hitler was because Hitler had an effect in Europe, while Churchill was conservatively continuing the thats-how-people-used-to-think-then policy towards his 'lesser subjects'.

"I believe the current skepticism around Silicon Valley's "Make The World a Better Place" mentality is deeply rooted in historical anxiety about institutional capitalism."

I am sorry, but that statement shows misunderstanding the issue at such level it is hard for me take his argument as something based on facts.

No. The skepticism around Silicon Valley has always been because of its coziness with the gub'mint. From internet to Siri, DARPA funds large parts of our research. And when this research reaches the public via SV, it automatically divides people into two groups - those who can use it and those who have been replaced. The group which can trump this research, though, keeps disappearing.

It doesn't, by definition, follow the principals of capitalism. That institution in 'institutional capitalism' is the government and it cannot be whitewashed over.

KDE devs are known to live on the bleeding edge. A lot of people complained about it when KDE moved from v1 to v2, v2 to v3 and v3 to v4. But KDE remains targeted to 'relatively recent' desktops.

It might not be that big of a problem this time around, when(ever) we move from v4 to v5, because hardware isn't evolving as fast as it used to. But KDE will remain a behemoth.

You should have used strict and warnings. RTFM, I know.

Btw, Java will silently compare references instead of value. Learning a language != increasing vocabulary.

cubancigar11··on Where are the African programmers?
Here is the thing. For whatever reasons, right or wrong, most people understand 'African' to mean 'black'. Sucks. Egypt is not populated by black people, and people think of that as part of middle-east.

Most people are only consciously politically correct.

cubancigar11··on C-Reduce, a C program reducer
Why? The code is GPLd for those who are allowed to use it. It is not free as in beer. But once you get the beer, you will get to know the recipe.

But if you think there is some other license that better expresses my... sentiment... you are welcome :)

(I know, it sounds kiddish. It was a long time ago and I felt really burned because PayPal management, from lower to top, is seriously fscked ethically. It took me more than a year to get interested in creating something new.)

Interesting. I was working on something quite similar when I was in PayPal. Here is a prototype: https://github.com/anupamsr/ut-test

Then the powers that be came and took all the credit. Since then I haven't touched it.

So I have been downvoted even though all I offered was facts.

You appear to have been miffed by the word "autobiography". But I think you know which volumes of books I am talking about.

> Not to mention these books are not considered as holy as the communists would consider Stalin's work for example.

First of all, these books are not discussed in detail at any camps just like Vector Algebra is not discussed in any nursery. What is your point? The leaders of RSS have consistently espoused a bigoted and fascist agenda which you have convinietly skipped over while wondering what "Hindu religious viewpoint" people are clamoring about. Please be clear: being against RSS is not being against "Hindu religious viewpoint", it is being against 'muslims are breeding like rabbits we need to control them like a pest' and 'Hindus are being attacked we must rally and unite behind a common cause of controling muslims like a pest' mentality. Let me know if you think RSS disagrees with this ideology and I will stop this discussion right here.

Also, Stalin's work? You meant Marx? I have yet to meet a liberal (which is what RSS means when they talk about commies) that has ever read Marx.

That _should_ shatter your understanding of whatever you have understood about 'commies'. Imagine how much wrong you just might be about the rest of it.

> and Secular.

And what are the characteristics of these 'secular'? A politically loaded term that has no place in a discussion grounded in reality.

> For example US denying visa to Modi... F*ck US visa who cares about it?

I feel I should plunge into this mud puddle.

I was part of the RSS shakhas. My family has been, for generations, part of RSS. Advani stayed at my house at the time of emergency.

> I do not know the "agenda" you are talking about.

Have you ever read any of the autobiographies of RSS 'sanghsarchalaks' (leaders)? I am not even talking about Gowalikar. Any recent ones? Have you ever read any issue of RSS mouthpiece magazine? Have you ever visited http://rss.org ?

> Communist, Church and Muslim organizations...

In short, the evergreen enemies of RSS and Hindu Nation.

> write unsubstantiated bs about RSS...

Do you have any backing beside RSS mouthpiece magazines?

> I would rather listen to Dr. Koenraad Elst

Because a true nationalist listens to outsiders who agree than nationals who disagree?

Emotions are what enable us to judge something as right vs. wrong. This has been conjectured philosophically since forever, and has recently been proven to be true by scanning a brain while it solves mathematical questions. Every right step evokes emotional center of the brain, qed.

EDIT: This fact has been used to argue against the 'enlightenment' era approach to solving problems. Unfortunately I am unable to find the relavant talk on youtube right now, since all the results for 'enlightenment' return mystic sadhu bs.

2. New DDG: http://s388.photobucket.com/user/cubancigar11/media/snapshot...

There are so many problems here:

1. Poor contrast of font-colors.

2. Poor choice of font - bold doesn't really standout as much as it should.

3. Font spacing has increased which forces me to scroll down thus breaking my thought process.

4. Icons now take vertical space instead of horizontal.

5. Mouse-hover color change has poor contrast. On my desktop I can only see it through a specific unnatural angle.

cubancigar11··on What Killed Google+ And What Can Save It
Skyrim mods are more than content packs. There is one that converts it into a 3D platformer, one that converts it into a puzzle game and one that converts it into an FPS by giving everyone a gun.

At some point you have to consider the fact that there really isn't much left to do in FPS. When Quake and HL came we were still in infancy. While CS survived every other mod died a horrible death in neglect. People now know what sucks. And what doesn't has been honed to perfection and there really isn't much left to do anymore.

If you want to see modding don't look at FPS, look at Minecraft.

cubancigar11··on What Killed Google+ And What Can Save It
> games are no longer moddable

I don't think that is true - success of Skyrim (or other TES series) stand in direct contrast. FPS are indeed non-moddable nowdays but FPS have been done to death and only the franchises (like Modern Warfare, CoD, Crysis) are making enough money.

That is what I am saying. If you want someone to work from tomorrow, then you look for people whose notice period is ending tomorrow or has already ended. You can no longer poach employees.

Did you want to say something else? Could you please explain further?

cubancigar11··on CEO complaints : employee not motivated after being fired
I have worked in several countries. It was based on my experience. Also, I have seen that notice period has gradually gone up in service based companies.

I know that HN core audience hasn't really seen that side of outsourcing, so the experiences might be different.

cubancigar11··on CEO complaints : employee not motivated after being fired
Of course not. I would prefer it to be around 2 weeks to 1 month.

But really, it depends on the job market. As an employee, let us say, a specialized laborer, I would prefer the notice period to be as long as possible because there aren't going to be any other jobs for me out there.

cubancigar11··on CEO complaints : employee not motivated after being fired
This is not specific to Belgium. Most countries beside USA have a notice period of 2 to 3 months.

In fact, it is actually much worse for an employee to have such long notice periods. The most obvious one is already mentioned - boredom and low morale. But it has an interesting side-effect: Most companies have immediate requirements and cannot wait for months before it is filled. So they hire from a pool that is limited to people who have already been laid off. And obviously the employees are in poor position to negotiate any salary increase.

While the most up-voted Pythagoras theorem proof [1] might be fun to see, it is rather the proof of the spectacular failure of our education - that nobody remembers anything taught in our school. The similarity of right triangles in a circle is proven using Pythagoras theorem in the first place!

Thankfully a better proof is present [2] which depends on distributive property and algebra.

I wasn't being personal, instead I was referring to 'Assuming I am an individual of significant wealth with altruistic motives' part of your comment. But since you have taken it personally so it is better we stop here. I will clarify one thing, though: I am not from USA so I don't know anything about OWS.
