Is that site still actively maintained? Footer says 2005-2023.

I like the old twitter logo in the News and FAQ sections though (the actual old twitter logo, not the one just before X)

ctm92··on The Microsoft 365 Copilot launch was a disaster
Microsoft making questionable decisions lately, the official RDP client on Mac was renamed to "Windows App" some weeks ago. It's hard to come up with a worse name, Windows App is what I name any software product that runs natively on Windows.

RIP all the helpdesk employees who have to explain this to end users

ctm92··on Open Source Alternative to Vercel, Netlify and Heroku
From my understanding, localstack is for emulating actual AWS resources locally, so you can develop without relying on their cloud services. It's not intended to be used in production.
ctm92··on Mixxx: GPL DJ Software
I stumbled across Mixxx many years ago when I wanted to get started with digital vinyl systems (timecode vinyl records). It was the really hot shit back then and Serato and Traktor were the market leaders.

Back then Mixxx didn't feel like a finished product, everything was not ready to actually use it in a "production" setting.

Then I found xwax [1], which uses the same timecode library as mixxx iirc. Very unspectacular UI, no mouse support, but super stable and easily as good as the commercial Serato Scratch Live. Just needed a 4i4o audio interface for around $100 and it was good to go, awesome software!

ctm92··on Why is Cloudflare Pages' bandwidth unlimited?
In the blog post it says AWS offer a free tier of 100GB transfer on S3, but you can get 1TB when you serve it over CloudFront [1] which you normally do when using a custom domain with HTTPS

ctm92··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
It does not only show to attackers that your address exists, it also shows that it is hosted on Microsoft 365 and is ATP is licensed.
ctm92··on Webtop – Alpine,Ubuntu,Fedora, and Arch containers containing full desktop envs
Their GitHub repo [1] has also skeleton dockerfiles that are annotated with comments on where you have to put your customizations, quite cool

Kasm [1] also has ready-to-use images that work similar. They are also customizable to contain own applications or configuration. Intended to be used with their Kasm Workspaces solution, but they also work standalone just fine.

ctm92··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
These days there's also to consider that some Mail Threat Protection Tools (at least Microsoft Defender in Exchange Online does this) click links in Mails to check them.

Recently ran into this issue as new mail accounts got confirmed automatically and magic links were invalid when the user clicked them, because Microsoft already logged in with it during checking.

ctm92··on Apple Watch with Android
From what I've heard, Whoop (https://whoop.com) has the best sleep tracking, but it is subscription based and the monthly price is ridiculous for a device that has not even a screen
ctm92··on Xiaomi Home Integration for Home Assistant
From what I know, HAOS runs on Docker in the backend, plugins are basically containers that are started up

But are the stairs a softlock?
ctm92··on Show HN: SmartHome – An Adventure Game
loved the game until I entered the stairwell and was not able to proceed or go back. Having this as a softlock is sad, especially since this could be a continuation of the story by using the stairs as some kind of emergency exit
ctm92··on SQLiteStudio: Create, edit, browse SQLite databases
I wanted to replace DBeaver for a long time, but I have some not really common connections there (e.g. Sybase SQL Anywhere), that no other client seems to support
ctm92··on Charset="WTF-8"
Łódź seems to be the only one translating to ??d?, all others have normal ASCII characters in the places 1, 2 and 4
ctm92··on Relativty: An open-source VR headset for $200
If you put value on your own time, then everything you build yourself is way more expensive than a product off the shelf. It's about the fun of building it and being able to modify it to your needs.
ctm92··on Standing desk might be as bad as sitting all day
Many desks have bluetooth these days and someone already built something like that: https://apps.apple.com/de/app/desk-remote-control/id15090377...
ctm92··on 418 I’m a teapot
There are quite some RFC with humor, most prominently probably RFC1149 and its extension RFC2549
ctm92··on The latter half of October, the maintainer goes offline
Crazy how this is normal, in Germany you won't even find anybody to work for you if you offered less than 30 days of vacation
ctm92··on Helen Fisher, who researched the brain’s love circuitry, has died
Not to be confused with Helene Fischer, one of the most successful german schlager stars
ctm92··on No "Hello", No "Quick Call", and No Meetings Without an Agenda
There's no problem with socializing, but this can also be a special appointment where everyone is free to join and can talk about stuff that is not related so a specific issue.

We do a weekly fixed appointment where we gather together and smalltalk about whatever is on our minds.

ctm92··on Show HN: Zerox – Document OCR with GPT-mini
That was also what first came to my mind, I guess Zerox might be a reference to this
ctm92··on Micromouse
I guess if you can pull that off while still maintaining that speed, then it's not cheating. Those things are crazy fast!
ctm92··on Hotel WiFi JavaScript Injection (2012)
In 2012 HTTPS was only common on websites that actually processed sensitive information like online shops and banks. Most websites/BBs (even with logins) didn't use HTTPS as it required you to buy a certificate. Lets Encrypt was not around back then
ctm92··on Zoho is attracting the attention of African startup founders
I used ManageEngine MDM before, which belongs to Zoho. The support is excellent, even though I was only using the free tier, they did everything to assist me. Open the support chat, one minute later you are chatting with a human (!), not some robot that you have to trick to eventually speak to someone.
