ctm92··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
They also only scan books that are easily and cheaply available, which means they are either not rare or have no significance.

Books that are rare of have historic significance will surely be in museums or libraries and not going away for pennies.

ctm92··on From Supabase to Clerk to Better Auth
Supabase is OSS but it's a real pain to actually self host it
ctm92··on Sandboxels
This looks a lot like Powdertoy
ctm92··on Floppy disks turn out to be the greatest TV remote for kids
Kids grow up with it and know everything way before the grown ups. They can't even stand up but already know how to unlock an iPhone (back in the days when there was slide to unlock)
ctm92··on A day at Hetzner Online in the Falkenstein data center
He usually does the videos in both german and english
ctm92··on Helm 4.0
Kustomize with ArgoCD is my go to
ctm92··on Laptops with Stickers
did you manage to clean it up? Sometimes stickers leave permanent discoloration of the case, especially on aluminium Macbooks
ctm92··on Laptops with Stickers
It's all fun until you want to sell the machine and the stickers discolored the case. Some stickers adhesive seem to react with the coating on MacBooks and permanently discolor them.

Just be aware of that :)

ctm92··on XSLT RIP
Recently had to grab content from a page that was layouted with tables. Just nested tables over tables, not even ids for the elements.
ctm92··on Carice TC2 – A non-digital electric car
I thought this was removed due to abuse taking place with such phones
ctm92··on Recall for Linux
It's an actual useful feature, it's just the tracking by microsoft that makes it meh.

I also track my activities with ActivityWatch (Open Source, https://activitywatch.net/) to remember missing time entries for billing clients. It's all local, so perfectly fine.

ctm92··on You already have a Git server
you don't even need ssh, you can also just store the remote on a local or remote file system
ctm92··on Migrating from AWS to Hetzner
We are using hetzner-k3s, super solid and easy to use. I love that it also utilizes the Hetzner Cloud Controllers to utilize the native Hetzner load balancers, volumes, network
ctm92··on Keyhive – Local-first access control
That callout card on the top of the site really messed with my brain with it being slightly tilted
ctm92··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
Slack is doing questinonable things anyways. When we migrated away from it to Teams, I wanted to export the workspace to be able to look stuff up in case we need it. We are a very small company and had the smallest plan, no chance, export only with the expensive plan.

Since I'm located in europe, I thought of just doing a data request based on GDPR (at least for my messages). They declined it and referred me to my organization, since we are in charge of fulfilling such requests (how would we even do that if there's no functionality for it?). Absolutely ridiculous.

ctm92··on Grapevine canes can be converted into plastic-like material that will decompose
it's not about CO2 emissions, it's about plastic waste that eventually degrades to microplastics
ctm92··on Buypass discontinues issuance of TLS/SSL certificates
In Chrome you can click on the icon next to the address and then on security, it will show the name of the company the cert is issued to. Quite hidden though.

But yeah, Safari is always something i have trouble finding the cert, they are really hiding it.

ctm92··on MacBook Pro Insomnia
I am so happy to learn that I'm not the only one experiencing these issues! For me it was so bad at some times that the MacBook woke up in my backpack and somehow did some really CPU intense tasks, leading to the fan going full speed. When taking it out it was almost too hot to touch, I was scared at times that it would break or set the bag on fire.
ctm92··on Show HN: Tinder but it's only pictures of my wife and I can only swipe right
A tender is the cart that contains the coal in steam locomotives, so it's a burden you can't get rid of. Not sure if my wife would appreciate that (if I had one)
ctm92··on Telefónica DE shifts VMware support to Spinnaker due to cost
Telefonica is the one with the worst coverage of the big threes. But they allow every Discount provider to use their network, so cost-sensitive people will mostly be on their network. Telekom and Vodafone have some discounters on their network, but it's not much more than a handful.
ctm92··on Thunderbird 140 “Eclipse”
When I see a website advertising a product without actual screenshots, I usually assume the product is absolute garbage. But that's for commercial products normally, not free software like Thunderbird
ctm92··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
They could publicly execute cute puppies, live stream this and force the users to watch it. They still won't lose significant user base.

I've given up on trying to get my non-tech network to use some other messenger, it's just too exhausting and wasted time.

ctm92··on Supabase raises $200M Series D at $2B valuation
It has gotten a bit better lately, but it's still a pain.

Just recently the docker-compose stack from the current main branch would not start properly, because someone committed a faulty health check. Why does this make it to the main branch, does nobody there review PR?

Starting a new stack is nothing compared to maintaining it. Upgrading to newer images requires carefully checking which environment variables suddenly appeared in new versions or maybe were renamed. Upgrades never really went absolutely smooth for me in the past.

ctm92··on Supabase raises $200M Series D at $2B valuation
When you use their SaaS offering, it's a good product. Self hosted is a different story. Massive stack that reinvents the wheel for every component, lack of documentation, breaking changes between versions all the time (although this has gotten better lately).

It feels like it's Open Source mainly for the sake of good PR, not to be actually useful.

ctm92··on TV Garden
The name is ironic, as there is a german TV show called Fernsehgarten (basically television garden). It's broadcasted live every sunday morning during summer season on ZDF, basically it's a outdoor studio with music and other things around a topic every week.

Mostly targeted to elderly people, but funny to watch every once in a while. You can even go there in person for quite cheap

ctm92··on Briar: Peer to Peer Encrypted Messaging
Switching ecosystems is a huge pain, I started with iPhone and eventually moved to Android and back again to iPhone. When you use a lot of the Apple/Google Services, it's not really easy to just switch over
ctm92··on Milk Kanban
If its only milk, then this polling might work. But might be also coffee, printer paper, pencils, whatever and you end up doing nothing else than checking shelves all day
ctm92··on Milk Kanban
Receipt paper rolls also have this: When the roll is near the end there are pink stripes, telling the cashier to have a new roll nearby as the printer is about to run out of paper
ctm92··on Tailscale is pretty useful
Tailscale is super awesome, I was amazed when I first set it up that it just worked out of the box. It can be set up by everyone without having to expose ports on the router (something that is often not even possible anymore due to CGNAT), so you get a lot of convenience without giving up security
ctm92··on The Microsoft 365 Copilot launch was a disaster
For me, the connection always fails the first time and after retrying it works.
