cthulhujr··on Optician Sans – A free font based on the historical eye charts
Yep, this can be seen in the embedded video around the 13 second mark.
cthulhujr··on MyHeritage Says 92M User Accounts Have Been Compromised
It will be an interesting day when millions of people have their detailed genetic profiles compromised. I'm not entirely sure how much useful data is gathered by these DNA test sites today, but I can easily imagine a future where data from human samples is a prime target for hackers. Perhaps more valuable than login credentials.
cthulhujr··on Gwynne Shotwell: SpaceX's Plan to Fly You Across the Globe in 30 Minutes [video]
>This is the only time I've out-visioned Elon ... I want to meet other people in other solar systems.

You're not out-visioning Elon; it's a petty attempt at one-upmanship. It just doesn't seem genuine. I want to meet people in other Superclusters. Now she's been out-visioned!

cthulhujr··on VLC 3.0 release
I can't offer any troubleshooting advice, but I can say that it works for me. On macOS 10.13.3. https://imgur.com/BQqIUsX
cthulhujr··on The best board game of 2017 is a wildly entertaining romantic comedy generator
This is a far better authority on tabletop gaming than Vox in the OP.

Also not super impressed with: > Fog of Love is available exclusively from Walmart for some reason

cthulhujr··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket sets up at Cape Canaveral ahead of launch
SpaceX Now (https://spacexnow.com) on iOS and Android can do something similar with notifications enabled for manifest changes.
cthulhujr··on Vice News FCC Net Neutrality Vote Live Stream
Net Neutrality has been killed in a 3-2 vote.
cthulhujr··on Would you send your kids to school on a self driving schoolbus?
The article implies that smaller vehicle capacities means routes are more specialized and riders are picked up directly from the home instead of bus stops. The alternative, picking up 10+ riders at their homes, is quite inefficient in terms of route length and thus, in most cases, a longer ride time too. This of course comes at the expense of having a larger quantity of smaller vehicles.
cthulhujr··on Firefox’s faster, slicker, slimmer Quantum edition now out
For folks not using Chrome as their password manager. Firefox has a built in utility to import passwords from Chrome. Personally, I use both. Chrome for the less important things that I want super-quick access to (i.e. autofill) and 1P for everything else.
cthulhujr··on Steve Wozniak: There's 'way too much hype' around Elon Musk's Tesla
The article suggests the hype around Tesla is about the autonomous driving features; I'd argue that only a small part of the hype. The hype is around a company disrupting an antiquated industry that has big oil and lawmakers in their back pocket.
cthulhujr··on With Torrent Sites Facing the Heat, Pirates Get Creative With Google Drive
One benefit is that you can download the file with ease; YouTube does not do have a download/save feature that I've seen. Lots of third-party workarounds, but nothing native.
cthulhujr··on John Carmack on Functional Programming (2013) [video]
I really like John's perspective on things, he can take a listener or reader from the most abstract concepts to the nitty-gritty without losing focus. He's a tremendous asset to the programming world.
cthulhujr··on William Shatner's Seat
A view from Shatner's other other seat: https://youtu.be/Uyp8B8Vro-s?t=1m20s
cthulhujr··on Death to JIRA
It seems like most organizations that use JIRA start off with good intentions, but it eventually devolves into a huge mess that users dread. Maybe it's because the system tries to do too much or, more likely, it's a user problem and orgs demand more and more features. Whatever the cause, it's leading to a death by 1000 cuts.
cthulhujr··on Chevrolet Bolt EV Is the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year
It's not just you. They're pretty open about the fact that they're a battery company.
cthulhujr··on Number of active repositories in GitHub per language, per month
Also language popularity based on this data might not be a fair conclusion. Some languages and environments do not lend themselves to OSS. For example, how many iOS app developers (using Swift) open source their app? Another is how many C# devs are using github as their repository over the various MS technologies.
cthulhujr··on Ask HN: What is your favorite internet rabbit hole?
About a month ago I started visiting again after years of it being long-forgotten. I was pleasantly surprised to see it's still (kinda) going strong. Reminds me a bit of Medium today, but a lot less preachy.
cthulhujr··on The Plan to Save a Life by Head Transplant
They also discard the body of the heart donor.
cthulhujr··on The Plan to Save a Life by Head Transplant
Can it be defined as what is being replaced and discarded? When you have a heart transplant, they replace the heart with a new one and discard the old heart. In this case, they're discarding the body, so I see it as a body transplant. As others have noted, mass is meaningless in this context.

Edit: The sources on wikipedia's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_transplant article all call it a head transplant... so, I assume people more knowledgeable than I on the topic have already "talked it out". Head transplant it is!

cthulhujr··on How fair are your dice?
>If you're rolling it and getting lots of 4s and 3s, it's because your die is messed up.

Video quickly went from science to BS. Random results and even distribution are not the same.

cthulhujr··on Mark Zuckerberg on the next 10 years of Facebook
The Tesla blog, Elon's contribution in particular, seems quite authentic. I wonder how many eyes see his work before it's published to the world. Maybe it's 10 layers of lawyers and PR, but the posts sure do maintain a strong level of facts and direct language. Would that be similar on his Twitter account? It seems extremely relaxed.
cthulhujr··on iMessage + Apps
Google wave was just too far ahead of its time. The world wasn't ready yet. And now look where we are. A clean UI and a little magic makes things so much different.
cthulhujr··on UberRUSH API – Add on-demand delivery to your app or service
The on-demand aspect of the service is what I believe to be most important. FedEx et all will deliver to my doorstep, but can they be here in an hour?
cthulhujr··on Siri creator shows off first public demo of Viv
>The live demo went off without any major glitches

At 3:54 - "The other thing I want to note is that Siri... err ummm Viv's audible voice is something we're still working on."

cthulhujr··on iPhone Sales Drop, and Apple’s 13-Year Surge Ebbs
>Its newest smartphone, the four-inch iPhone SE, went on sale in late March, too late to affect the most recent quarterly results, but analysts hope to get more insight into how it is selling.

Went to the Apple Store in my large metro and they were out of almost every model. The associate searched other stores and there wasn't much within 1500 miles. Anecdotal, but it looks like the demand is outpacing the supply of the iPhone SE. It'll be interesting to see the sales numbers.

cthulhujr··on Storage Pod 6.0: Building a 60 Drive 480TB Storage Server
Are they offering the 6.0 controllers, etc. with the standard length housing? I would think that's an option soon, if not now. Perhaps the 6.0 controllers have no benefit with fewer drives.
cthulhujr··on Lost plans for Wright brothers’ ‘Flying Machine’ found after 36 years
Though they're common to the area, these underground storage facilities are interesting places. They're large enough to drive semi-trucks through. One notable client has tons of old movie memorabilia (scripts, costumes, set pieces, film, etc.). They're also a common place for small data centers and digital archives.
cthulhujr··on Squash your commits
I could see this replacing the git workflow of creating a temporary branch that's used just for merging pre-master.
cthulhujr··on Model 3 Unveiling [video]
He does seem like a pretty genuine guy. Just a big kid living out his childhood fantasies.
