csdrane··on The Whole Haystack: The N.S.A. claims it needs access to all our phone records
Would you really want all the information the NSA collects to be shared freely between agencies?
csdrane··on The Federal Reserve has enormous power over who is president

csdrane··on Sugar Molecule Links Red Meat Consumption and Elevated Cancer Risk in Mice
That makes sense. Thanks.
csdrane··on Sugar Molecule Links Red Meat Consumption and Elevated Cancer Risk in Mice
Serious question: is there any reason to think that mice would be a good proxy for human health results re: meat consumption?
csdrane··on Update on Sony Investigation
Part of me does wonder whether we're headed in that direction. See: Rainbow's End, by Vernor Vinge.

What is the equilibrium in a world where state funded actors can anonymously attack major companies / infrastructure components? I am not convinced that is possible for a Sony to secure itself to such a level that it will not be vulnerable to attacks by state actors.

csdrane··on The Endlessly Examined Life: A most chronic depression
Sad story. I wonder whether he might have benefitted from a mindfulness based therapy. Unfortunately, some depressions are more difficult to treat than others. Very qualified doctors that I know would disagree with the notion that "it’s still not clear that [antidepressants] are better than placebos." They would argue that antidepressants are overprescribed to people that do not in fact have biological depression, lowering the effectiveness rate. Lastly, it should be noted that ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), is actually one of the most effective treatments for depression, and one that carries minimal harmful side effects (although short-term memory loss is one such side effect).
csdrane··on Logs of compromised Tor site released
Not knowing much about doxbin, I don't understand why it would have been seized. It doesn't seem anywhere near in the same league as the various drug markets that were seized.
csdrane··on Datacoup sells your anonymous data for real, cold hard cash
I'd think there would be some sort of selection bias here. Perhaps that's part of the reason.
csdrane··on Pulling JPEGs out of thin air
Clojure repl + Overtone?
csdrane··on Please remove mitsuhiko/*
Not sure how the process works, but what about getting their domain added to Spamhaus's lists? [1]

csdrane··on U.N.C. Investigation Reveals ‘Shadow Curriculum’ to Help Athletes
Pretty shocking but I imagine this is just the tip of the iceberg.
csdrane··on The man with the golden blood
I would have guessed that the reason for prohibiting payment for blood would be the same as the reason prohibiting payment for organ donations. Interesting that in this case it is blamed on trying to minimize donations from people with HIV.
csdrane··on Emacs 24.4 RC 1
What's the advantage of Helm to Ido?
csdrane··on 2nd Dallas worker tests positive for Ebola
Also relevant is this Reddit thread, although take it with a grain of salt for now: User involved with Dallas emergency broke that there was a 2nd healthcare worker infected yesterday. He also has a source that 5-6 more nurses and a doctor who worked with Duncan are showing fevers.[1]

csdrane··on Skunk Works Reveals Compact Fusion Reactor Details
Can we assume that their reactor isn't energy positive? Because if it were, I would imagine that they would be announcing so--rather than this nebulous "breakthrough."
csdrane··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
How'd you derive that formula?
csdrane··on Me and my 'useless' gall bladder
Agreed. I think blanket statements like "medical science has established that it is an almost completely useless organ [1]" need to caveat this with "medical science as it currently stands today".

csdrane··on The Emails Snowden Sent to First Introduce His NSA Leaks
I wondered whether this paid homage to other notable leakers before him.
csdrane··on Dallas health worker who tested positive for Ebola wore ‘full’ protective gear
If Thomas Eric Duncan hadn't lied to get on the plane, he would have died too.
csdrane··on The survival of filoviruses in liquids and solid substrates (2010) [pdf]
I don't think it was censored, I think the link must have expired. You can get the PDF that I initially linked by clicking Get PDF in the above URL.

Mods please replace the broken original link with cryptoz's.

csdrane··on Show HN: Clojure in the Open – simple tasks from open-source projects
Maybe it's just me, but I find the site difficult to view due to the light contrast.
csdrane··on Could Ebola vaccine delay be due to an intellectual property spat?
Now try replacing IP with personal property.
csdrane··on Terry Gilliam on His Epic New Dystopian Film the Zero Theorem
As someone who used to really enjoy dystopian themes, and who still does when done properly, the trope has become overused. "Epic new dystopian" film instead sounds like your standard "start out interesting for the first thirty minutes," and which then devolves into an hour or so of mindless fighting. Then again, Gilliam did do Brazil so maybe I'm wrong.
csdrane··on Chapter Two of Peter Thiel's New Book
I wait with bated breath that this will be more than just a recapitulation of Blake's existing notes.
csdrane··on The Mathematics of Ebola Trigger Stark Warnings
What do similar charts for prior outbreaks like?
csdrane··on Why I like Common Lisp
Not too long ago I was researching what Lisp to learn. I contemplated Common Lisp, but ultimately chose to learn Clojure. The latter won because the development community seems to have more life to it. Additionally, the fact that one can import existing Java libraries is a huge plus. Very much enjoying everything so far.
csdrane··on Ask HN: How do you come up with ideas for small side projects?
Thank you this is great advice.
csdrane··on The Matasano Crypto Challenges
Also by Matasano, and tons of fun: https://microcorruption.com

In-browser reverse engineering game.

csdrane··on Ask HN: How do you come up with ideas for small side projects?
Yes I'm learning Clojure. I've done the Clojure Koans and have been working through problems on 4Clojure.org. I'm getting to the point where I want to start applying what I've learned.
csdrane··on Clojure Style Guide
Seems to me like Clojure is experience a popularity surge on HN lately. I wonder what's driving this.

Maybe my perception is just biased because I'm currently learning Clojure.
