crystalPalace··on Ask HN: Did anybody bootstrap a successful business by hiring a freelancer?
As someone who works on a freelance team, why do you only hire individuals?
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?
Have you considered Soylent or one of its many derivatives? Some such as Joylent are a little cheaper while others have a wider variety of flavors and there are even keto options like Ketolent and Keto Chow.
crystalPalace··on Fogging your Google search history with Python and Reddit
I immediately thought of TrackMeNot. I wrote a similar but less complex program(https://github.com/torchhound/chaff). It originally used Google's Web Search API but that became deprecated and I switched to DuckDuckGo. I've been thinking about adding Faroo and Google Custom Search.
crystalPalace··on What’s New In Python 3.6
Really happy to see the secrets module being added to the standard library. Now to make sure every Python developer knows of its existence.
crystalPalace··on GitHub Major Service Outage
I also received this message when pushing. Didn't notice at first but I checked the repo and my chart and noticed neither had updated. It was a very spooky moment because I rely very heavily on Github.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: What “missing” technical solution(s) do you wish existed?
Yesod(http://www.yesodweb.com/) may be the web framework of your dreams. Yesod is great for building web apps and APIs. The biggest downside is the long compile time which leads to issues with cheap VPS instances since you need to compile on another machine since the instance doesn't have enough RAM.
crystalPalace··on Standardized Ladder of Functional Programming [pdf]
I definitely agree that the most difficult part of learning something new especially something as esoteric as FP is knowing where to start and then where to go from there. I also benefited from and highly recommend functional-programming-jargon(https://github.com/hemanth/functional-programming-jargon).
crystalPalace··on Palantir plan to engage in disinformation and document fabrication [pdf]
Wouldn't it be funny if the current conspiracy theory about Assange being missing was misinformation planted by Palantir or any number of other actors to discredit the organization?
crystalPalace··on Lua as a Python’s secret weapon
Unless you have a job where you can choose your own tech stack or are otherwise self-employed are there really non-game development jobs that use Lua? I like the language and have used it for scripting games before but have never seen a single job posting for that skill set. I even have it on my resume and I'm fairly certain no one has ever noticed.
crystalPalace··on What I learned from spending 3 months applying to jobs after a coding bootcamp
I think that was their thought process. My personal Github is a bit of a graveyard/dumping ground but I saw this as a wakeup call and got rid of a bunch of forked repos and combined some unfinished projects into other repos.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: What are your favorite active tech-related subreddits comparable to HN?
Lainchan is pretty good but also glacially slow. Many threads stay open for years. The level of conversation is reasonably high as long as you stick to specific threads. The /g/ boards of the world are almost universally garbage.
crystalPalace··on What I learned from spending 3 months applying to jobs after a coding bootcamp
My github account was brought up in a recent technical interview. The hiring manager felt that my account lacked professionalism because I had several >= 1 year old, unfinished repositories.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: An idea that you could not implement?
Sounds very similar to urbit or sandstorm. The key difference being the single filesystem and single feed which are not explicit features of either of the aforementioned products but could be created on them or might be planned.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: What's your go-to back end for simple projects?
I also use and love Flask for exactly these reasons. Additionally I've been playing around with Flask_Restful and have been very pleased with the results.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: What are you using for project management?
My company uses Asana.
crystalPalace··on Walgreen Sues Theranos, Seeks $140 Million in Damages
I have only tried Soylent. I have a very restrictive diet and Soylent is the only liquid that fits my requirements. It's worked for about 3 months so far.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: Good resources/sites for things every programmer should know?
A great intro or refresher for a surprisingly large array of languages and some concepts - https://learnxinyminutes.com/

A great start for the generalist software developer/engineer - http://matt.might.net/articles/what-cs-majors-should-know/

crystalPalace··on Walgreen Sues Theranos, Seeks $140 Million in Damages
Purely anecdotal but I suffer from Crohn's Disease and the only thing that really helped was Soylent. I can't eat solid food and since starting Soylent I have experienced much lower occurrences of symptoms.
crystalPalace··on Micro web-framework for COBOL
There is a large market for maintaining legacy COBOL, SNOBOL, and various esoteric assembly codebases. Additionally APL and its derivatives are not entirely dead.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: Who are the other Elon Musk's?
Bezos definitely makes sense since he is also a pioneer in the private space industry, a major philanthropist, and Amazon is a very large and non-traditional company pursuing a wide variety of goals in hardware and software.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2016)
I tried to email the dev-recruitment address and gmail was unable to deliver my message.
crystalPalace··on Show HN: A Curated List of Rabbit Holes on the Internet
I think this is a good suggestion and recommend that you submit a pull request so you may receive credit. If I don't see a PR at some point in the future I will probably add it myself. Thank you for the engagement.
crystalPalace··on Show HN: A Curated List of Rabbit Holes on the Internet
I was inspired to compile this list by a recent Ask HN post about rabbit holes on the internet. The majority of the links come directly from that thread while others are links I have come across. Please enjoy and consider contributing!
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: What would you want in a site for dev jobs if it was built today?
I think this is a very nice list. I particularly agree with the inclusion of dev hardware provided and interview style. I really don't enjoy A & DS beatdowns.
crystalPalace··on Ask HN: What is your goto resource for learning about big data, ML, AI etc?
I enjoy the way this site is written and its focus on getting developers up and running quickly while still instilling conceptual basics.
