cryptofistMonk··on Scientists Achieve Real-Time Communication with Lucid Dreamers in Breakthrough
Could be that each dreamer participated in multiple trials
cryptofistMonk··on Intruder at the top of the 20 meter amateur band?
I'm sure the exchanges like the buckets of money that HFTs pay them, even on their discounted commission fees. There's also billions in industry just around supporting HFTs, including FPGAs, silicon fab, networking equipment, etc. The cost to society of killing HFTs would probably be fairly large and imo the drawbacks are mostly minor.
cryptofistMonk··on PicoLisp Chess
HN loves chess recently. I've also gotten (casually) back into it. I wonder if this is all because of the queen's gambit
cryptofistMonk··on I Did the Math on My Town’s Cul-de-Sacs. Here's What I Found
Is this really all based on roads needing replacement every 14 years? I don't know where the author came up with that number... But if you've ever lived on a low-traffic road for more than 14 years you will know that they are not replaced that often
cryptofistMonk··on Anarch: Super small public domain no-dependency from-scratch suckless Doom clone
He claims it's written in a subset of C99 that also compiles as C++
cryptofistMonk··on Achieving 100Gbps intrusion prevention on a single server
Reading "FGPA" in the fourth paragraph confused me more than it should have.
cryptofistMonk··on Color-balancing vote margins and vote totals in the US election map
Yes, I was just thinking that, if you really wanted to control for the relative power of votes in a different counties.
cryptofistMonk··on Color-balancing vote margins and vote totals in the US election map
I guess I'm really talking about the "lightness", not saturation
cryptofistMonk··on Color-balancing vote margins and vote totals in the US election map
I wonder how much difference it would make if vote "density" was used to determine the saturation, rather than total number of votes.

By my thinking, a geographically large county with 500,000 votes appears much more significant than a smaller county with the same number of votes in this map, and adjusting for density could potentially correct that?

cryptofistMonk··on The public has a right to know how companies that pay no taxes pull it off
If you claim a loss what are they taxing, revenue?
cryptofistMonk··on Tone-Deafness Test
The audio was very crackly for me, anyone else? Also the dull sine wave was fairly difficult to differentiate at small intervals, I wonder if the researchers considered the effect of different timbres
cryptofistMonk··on This Person Does Not Exist (2019)

cryptofistMonk··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay

cryptofistMonk··on Pixel 5
It's not just about how I expect the web to work, I'm looking at Google's website on Google's phone in Google's web browser and it's _janky_. It's just bad. I as a software developer feel confused and disoriented, how is Grandma supposed to read this?
cryptofistMonk··on Pixel 5
Scrolljacking like this is just never a good idea, why do massive companies keep trying this? I can't imagine it improves their metrics. Go ahead and put your pictures and videos in there but let me read the damn page. It's not immersive, it's annoying.
cryptofistMonk··on Trevor Milton Out of Nikola Motors
I'm shocked to see no mention of the tweets by David Bateman that seem to have set this off https://twitter.com/davidbateman/status/1307212066017521667?...
cryptofistMonk··on Are you an anarchist? The answer may surprise you (2000)
"How many hours would we really need to work in order to maintain a functional society — that is, if we got rid of all the useless or destructive occupations like telemarketers, lawyers, prison guards, financial analysts, public relations experts, bureaucrats and politicians, and turn our best scientific minds away from working on space weaponry or stock market systems to mechanizing away dangerous or annoying tasks like coal mining or cleaning the bathroom, and distribute the remaining work among everyone equally?"

Somewhat interesting thought, but it does not sound anarchist at all. Who's going to do the turning of our scientific minds, decide which minds are the scientific ones, or distribute the rest of the shitty jobs? When jobs are being distributed, who is going to be paying or otherwise providing for the workers? This sounds a lot more like some kind of totalitarian communist state.

cryptofistMonk··on Buying and Selling stocks with maximum profit
Commenters should note the constraint in the problem definition that the maximum number of buy-sell pairs allowed is two.
cryptofistMonk··on Chromium project finds that 70% of security defects are memory safety problems
Containers and smart pointers will pretty much do the trick. There's really no need for manual memory management anymore, can't remember the last time I used new/delete. Only problem is most large C++ apps, Chromium included, are older than a lot of the language features that have made C++ much safer these days.
cryptofistMonk··on On the Visual Weariness of the Web
There might be a few websites that could get away with this, but for the vast majority usability is king. If I can't quickly navigate, find what I need, and read your site - what's the point?
