crypt1d··on China's Central Bank Bans ICOs
I am making a choice to believe them that it is not a scam. You can only know if their statement was true or not after the fact.

We all make choices like this daily on regular basis. However, its apparently appropriate to be scammed into various political promises, product descriptions, etc. But its not okay to be part of this 'ICO lottery' because one can easily be scammed? Give me a break.

crypt1d··on China's Central Bank Bans ICOs
A lot of people seem to suggest that some kind of regulation, or even outright ban, of ICOs is necessary. Apparently in order to prevent people from loosing their money on risky investments?

I don't really understand why it is appropriate for someone else to tell me how to spend my hard earned money? Isn't that what freedom of choice is about? Even if I'm being manipulated into a scam, it is still MY choice.

Let people spend their ICO money the way they spend their votes. Its basically the same form of manipulation anyway.

The idea of Bitcoin replacing fiat is a vision, not a plan.

People assume, or just like to believe, that as Bitcoin adoption grows, the advantages of Bitcoin will far surpass fiat and people will gradually start moving to it as a de facto currency. This will/would be an organic process, likely to last a few decades at least.

crypt1d··on Free Data Recovery of Wet Phones and Hard Drives for Hurricane Harvey Victims
> That way they would have received both the positive publicity as well as reduced the free labor they need to provide.

not everyone has an agenda. perhaps this was just about helping people.

crypt1d··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
Honestly, I tried really hard to attribute this to stupidity. But this level of stupidity and negligence is really beyond my understanding.
crypt1d··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
This might as well be a scam created by the CEO himself. I mean, who in this 'crypto world' would be stupid enough to use the same, previously compromised, password on all his accounts?

P.S. there was a story on reddit (can't find it now unfortunately) about how the attackers tried to deposit the money to Bittrex but luckily someone alerted them and the exchange froze the account. So there is still some hope that funds will be returned.

crypt1d··on Robocalls Flooding Your Cellphone? Here’s How to Stop Them
hmm most SOHO ISPs charge a flat monthly/yearly rate, so that point doesn't really stand.
crypt1d··on Robocalls Flooding Your Cellphone? Here’s How to Stop Them
> I've never understood why people find it weird to use that model for phone service but not for internet service.

I think its because an internet connection has to be initiated by you at which point you give your consent to be charged for it. On the other hand you can get a phone call from anyone really without you previously agreeing to paying the cost of the call.

crypt1d··on Feeling bad about feeling bad can make you feel worse
Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
crypt1d··on Filecoin Suspends ICO After Raising $186M in One Hour
I'm kind of amazed how Filecoin managed to create such a hype, even though its nothing more than a whitepaper right now.

I mean, there are already 2 or 3 coins that are doing something very similar and already have at least a working prototype (eg Siacoin, Storj), or have an interesting algo like Proof of Storage from Burst. Is there anything that makes Filecoin superior compared to the other's, or is it just that its VC-backed?

crypt1d··on Al Gore: 'The rich have subverted all reason'
“Our democracy has been hacked.” is something that resonates with me very well. A select group of people have mastered media manipulation and are now acting as puppeteers while we are all in a state of confusion, no longer able to discern truth from disinformation. It is not classic censorship that worries me anymore. It is this constant bombardment with questionable data that we need to figure out how to battle, as it is our biggest enemy now. We need some way to get out of the disinformation bubble and be able to see the real picture.

BTW this article reminded me of a great show[1] that Last Week Tonight did, about how local news outlets in US are used to manipulate the masses.

crypt1d··on Slack's 404 page
Now that this is on HN I bet their error log monitoring is going to go berserk. There's probably an Ops guy trying to figure out where all the 404s are coming from :)
crypt1d··on TSA will require separate screenings for electronics larger than a cell phone
I've never been to the US. I'd love to visit though, so many beautiful places to see! I had this idea to rent an RV on the west coast and spend a few months visiting bunch of places.

But lately I've been deterred by all this TSA crap and the political 'developments'. I just no longer feel comfortable about traveling there. Don't get me wrong, my home country is far from peachy. But everything I read about US these days screams - don't come here. I'm sure their tourism industry wont fall apart because of one person, but I'm also pretty sure I'm not the only one that feels like this.

Seems like I'll just go somewhere warm for the winter to chill out (Canary Islands, anyone?)

crypt1d··on Pass: A standard Unix password manager
Huh? Its not reasonable to expect automated password rotation for all shared secrets, especially for external services that a team could use. Some passwords will always need to be rotated manually.
crypt1d··on Pass: A standard Unix password manager
The whole point of the discussion was to highlight a feature that I was missing here - ability to audit who accessed what.

There will always be a person with admin (or master password) access who can edit logs or bypass them entirely, but this is suppose to be a person who has the final responsibility in the team's 'chain of command'. The audit log exists so that this very admin can monitor the logs for suspicious behavior and clean up the passwords after a team member leaves. Hence, having the ability to decrypt the db with a master password is irrelevant as the master password should only be accessible to the admin.

crypt1d··on Pass: A standard Unix password manager
Thats the whole point of audit logs. You lookup the passwords he accessed and only rotate those (vs rotating all of team's shared secrets because you dont know which ones he used/saved/etc).
crypt1d··on Pass: A standard Unix password manager
Thats why password managers that do support audit logs (normally) do not provide this kind of mechanism of manually decrypting the file. The only way of accessing passwords would be through whatever interface they came up with.
crypt1d··on Pass: A standard Unix password manager
Looks nice. Unfortunately I would never use it for teams as it doesn't have audit logs. These are very useful in case a user is compromised - you can lookup which passwords he accessed and only change those. Same goes if the user left the team and u want to make sure all accesses are revoked.
crypt1d··on Travelers just won back a bit of their privacy at the border
Yes, IT sec is sort of a rabbit hole. There is always another attack vector right under. If its not software, then its firmware, if its not firmware then its the chip..etc. Normally, you would consider where the biggest risk is and set up your security accordingly. Unfortunately, with such an intrusive, state-level actor, you have to assume the worst.
crypt1d··on Travelers just won back a bit of their privacy at the border
Yes they could, but that would (usually) assume that I'm being targeted specifically by law enforcement. They could also access my data this way, but yet they choose to inspect my phone physically, on entry.

What I'm more worried about is my data being accessed as part of yet another mass surveillance program. I'm not saying that is not already possible with other means, but I would certainly not want to make their job easier.

crypt1d··on Travelers just won back a bit of their privacy at the border
I would consider any device that's been through an inspection as potentially compromised as they could theoretically install a backdoor and access ur data later. Maybe just using some kind of a burner phone is better.
crypt1d··on Used GPUs flood the market as Ethereum's price drops below $150
Its mostly RX series that are being sold off and the reason for that is the ever-increasing Ethereum DAG size. I dont know the specifics, but due to the DAG size the ETH hash rate on AMD RX400/500s is starting to slowly drop, and will be behind the performance of their Nvidia counter-parts in a few months time.

Lykke comes to my mind with their LKK1Y coin:

https://www.lykke.com/city/blog/what_is_lykke_forward

https://www.lykke.com/

The original, LKK coin, is essentially a representation of the company's shares. LKK1Y is a derivative which you can stake and receive the same amount of LKK in 1 year time.

Do note that as of now, Lykke wallet is unavailable in the US as they are still working out the regulations.

crypt1d··on Someone cloned my website and is using it to scam people
I can see how scammers would abuse such a service but u should not be so quick to assume that that is his major customer base. There have been numerous occasions where I was required to do SMS verification for legit accounts, and I didn't want to expose my phone number.
crypt1d··on IISc Bangalore scientists are doing seed bombing with drones to plant a forest
I've also read a lot of stuff on the Internet, that doesn't make it all true. Source?
crypt1d··on To deflate the cryptocurrency token bubble, fix the market cap indicator
I've been following Siacoin development very closely for the last couple of months. Their devs seem like one of the few remaining people in crypto that actually care about developing a working product/coin, vs just abusing the unregulated market and getting filthy rich.

Kudos to the team for getting on the front page of HN. I'm sure this will raise awareness of their product at least a little bit. Just looking at the coin itself, looks like it jumped 10 points since this blog appeared.

crypt1d··on Shutting down public FTP services
Neither is FTP really, the user's IP is still logged somewhere, you just use a common user (anonymous) with everyone else. The modern name of such a feature would probably be something like 'No registration required'. It goes to show how much the meaning of the word 'anonymous' changed over the last 30 years.
crypt1d··on LinkedIn’s new UI proves it doesn’t know it’s value to users
Linkedin is really terrible.

You are constantly spamed by career 'advices', recruiters, life coaches and people bragging about their work-related achievements... Its really difficult to find any interesting content there. I tend to spend no more than 10 seconds on it, unless I need to respond to a (recruiter) message. Feels like the only people getting anything out of Linkedin are those who are new to their respective fields, and need to network a bit and maybe land a new job. Otherwise, it feels like waste of Internet bandwidth.

Frankly I have such a low opinion about Linkedin, that I'm amazed that nobody came up with an alternative yet. Maybe its the whole 'professional social network' concept that feels weird to me? While I socialize with my colleagues on regular basis, I dont want _work_ to be at the center of my socialization. I prefer to talk to people about other things in their lives.

crypt1d··on Ethereum price goes up nearly 50 percent in under a week
The altcoin trading market went berserk after the ETF decision, so there is likely some correlation. I guess a lot of money was made off the volatility around that time, so it had to go somewhere.

P.S. as I write this, poloniex went down.

crypt1d··on Unplanned Freefall? Some Survival Tips
The article mentions a few people, including Vesna Vulovic who holds the Guinness world record for surviving a free fall at 33000 feet.
