crsmith··on 'One Ring' Phone Scam
Doesn't this block all other notifications too?
crsmith··on Bitcoin ETF research finds that 95% of Bitcoin volume is fake
Yup. CMC tries to account for this in its pricing (which is volume-weighted btw) by ignoring those exchanges (which it discloses in the "Markets" section).
crsmith··on Facebook Really Is Spying on You, Just Not Through Your Phone's Mic
Even if FB/Instagram knows my wife and I share an IP address or there were both FB/Instagram and Google cookies on the same browser where I searched for Meow Mix, how would Instagram know my Google/Youtube history?
crsmith··on Facebook Really Is Spying on You, Just Not Through Your Phone's Mic
A couple of weeks ago I search for (on Google) and played (on YouTube, logged into my account) the Meow Mix song to play it for my 4 year old.

Less than an hour later, Instagram showed a Meow Mix advertisement on my wife's account, on her phone.

We have no animals. We have never had animals. She probably (though maybe not) has never logged into Instagram or Facebook on my browser.

It was too much of a coincidence.

crsmith··on AIM will shut down after 20 years
A lot of hedge fund traders still use AIM. The sell side is going to use whatever the buy side wants, and the buy side has some tech dinosaurs.

Symphony is trying to tap into that market.

Also interesting, Bloomberg is coming out with a cheap version of their instant messenger ($10/month)

I tried this, but Do Not Disturb silences all texts, including those from contacts. Deal breaker for me.

To users, will this affect location-based actions? (Like Google Inbox delivering an email upon arrival to a location.)

crsmith··on President Trump: What Does It Mean for Your Tax Bill?
If you're an independent contractor, you'll pay a 15% rate on your income. 15%.

Also: "those earning less than $48,400 will experience an annual tax cut of less than $400, while those earning in excess of $700,000 will walk away with an average of an extra $215,000 per year." (That's probably assuming the 700k is from business interests, not salary)

crsmith··on Apple's stock under Jobs: from $10 to $400
If "Good to Great" were written today, I wonder what Jim Collins would have said about Apple (stock price increase was the basis for choosing good-to-great companies). Was Steve Jobs a Level 5 leader?

crsmith··on Why A Brush With Death Triggers The Slow-Mo Effect
FWIW, in the book Getting Things Done, David Allen mentions being "in the zone" (or "mind like water," which he mentions comes from karate) is a key to being more productive.

It makes sense our flight-or-fight instinct could put us in the zone, much like your comment describes.

I've been trying to harness that power (but in more non-life-threatening situations, like at work).

crsmith··on I am a high-profile Silicon Valley venture capitalist. AMA (Ask Me Anything)
Interesting tidbits:

Q:If i have a business plan, how do you want me to send it to you?

A:Have someone who already knows us refer you to us. If you don't know someone who knows us, we are highly unlikely to fund your company as a practical matter.

Advice: I would skip the networking events and spend your time building your reputation through hard (and brilliant) work.

crsmith··on Ask HN - What's your best startup idea?
A super-simple way to email groups. Something where someone can easily subscribe and unsubscribe. Something that doesn't require signing up for an account, but only add an email address.

Concept:

Go to www.saturdaymorningrunninggroup.emailgroups.com

The webpage will have a box to easily add your email address.

To email the group, you send an email to saturdaymorningrunninggroup@emailgroups.com and it is broadcast to everyone on the list.

crsmith··on Ask HN: How do I find a hacker roommate in NYC?
You can expand your horizons by making new hacker friends. Good luck!
crsmith··on How far can you get from a McDonald's in the continental US?
The most interesting thing about this article to me is where the author got the data -- http://www.aggdata.com .

I ran across aggdata some time ago while looking for a list that they happened to provide for free. They provide niche data that they scraped from the internet. Their data is cheap enough that it's not worth trying to scrape the data yourself. I think the business model can be duplicated easily and there is plenty of room on the long tail.
