crobertsbmw··on I was interviewed by an AI bot for a job
That seems reasonable. Some employers will hand out 3-6 hour assignments after a candidate’s resumes make it through an AI screening.
crobertsbmw··on Show HN: AI in SolidWorks
I’m just a grumpy old man, but I like having to do it the hard way. I liked having to code the hard way too. With all the AI vibe coding stuff I now feel like I’m stupid for doing it the hard way. And I probably am. I would definitely think someone else was stupid if they were using an axe to cut down a tree when there’s a chainsaw sitting right next to them. Or if someone was writing assembly code when anything else would do just fine… I guess I feel sad that the AI gets to take over a lot of the mundane but also often times relaxing and fun parts.
crobertsbmw··on Show HN: Books mentioned on Hacker News in 2025
In safari, if I have content blockers enabled (which I have on by default for privacy and whatnot) then the site doesn’t show me anything. I’m guessing these are all ad links or something?
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
But you didn’t say what you are making!
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
Yeah, these are super fun! Good luck!
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
Yeah, I’ve improved it a lot, but a lot of the books from the run I did 18 months ago get confused on the cover page thinking it’s open to the NOT page.
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
Thanks for buying it!!
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
I’m still selling Computer Engineering for Babies. And I just launched a new book called Simple Machines Made Simple on Kickstarter a month or two ago. Both books are basically just simple interactive demos for kids and adults.

crobertsbmw··on Selling numbered rocks, you get whatever's next in sequence
Maybe just show the last purchased number? Then it’s a race to get your order in if you want the next sequential number.
crobertsbmw··on Object that slammed into Florida home was space junk for ISS, NASA confirms
I thought the same thing. I’m sure he’s the primary investigator of this case, but I still wonder how he came to suspect the ISS for a solid soda can ripping through two stories of his house.
crobertsbmw··on Right turn on red? With pedestrian deaths rising, US cities are considering bans
When I was 14 I was hit by a car while I was riding my bike in this same scenario. I was okay, it just rattled me a bit. Overall, I just hate cars and hope to some day live in a world where they aren’t pet of the everyday. Maybe I can move to Amsterdam or something..
crobertsbmw··on Woman wins 12-year legal battle against Google
There’s a difference between “settles” and “wins”. Sounds like they settled, but then they talk like she won…
crobertsbmw··on Show HN: Storybooks – AI-generated bedtime stories for kids
Ui needs some help on mobile. A lot of the text is overlapping.
crobertsbmw··on Who profits most from America's baffling health-care system?
Interesting. Do you have any support for this claim?
crobertsbmw··on E-ink is so Retropunk
I have one of your displays. It’s really nice. I intend to do something with option one, but I just haven’t found the time. Right now, as your targeting computer minded folks, I think your customers can figure out how to set up an image url that changes periodically, but as you scale you might want to create more accessible options. Or maybe let third parties build apps to do it for you..
crobertsbmw··on Illegal shooting along power lines a leading cause of death for bald eagles
I have a weakness in that I always give people the benefit of the doubt. So I suspect that people are shooting these birds “for sport,” not realizing they are protected birds. I wonder if posting more signage to educate shooters that there are bald/golden eagles or whatever in the area, if that would help mitigate this at all. Maybe I’m too optimistic.
crobertsbmw··on Self-hosted photo and video backups directly from your mobile phone
The demo credentials don’t seem to work.
crobertsbmw··on Scams upon scams: The data-driven advertising grift
I’m not sure this is true. Facebook makes a lot more money from me if my ads are converting, and I continue to spend money day after day. If they just burn my money and I’m not seeing enough conversions out of it, then I kill my ads and start trying my luck with Twitter or Pinterest ads..
crobertsbmw··on Cities turn to ‘extreme’ water recycling
Id vote to take it a step further and charge agriculture market prices for water regardless of where they sell their crop. Seems like that would largely solve the issue altogether.
crobertsbmw··on WhatsApp Down
Everyone has to make their bed somewhere…
crobertsbmw··on Octopuses caught on camera throwing things at each other
I think they are already regarded as one of the most intelligent creatures we know about.
crobertsbmw··on What Counts as a Bestseller?
Thanks! At first it was just a couple posts on Reddit and HN,m. Every once in a while someone will share it on Twitter or something and it will blow up for a few days. I’m spending a few hundred dollars a day on paid ads right now, but even that ebbs and flows on wether it’s profitable.
crobertsbmw··on What Counts as a Bestseller?
I wrote a book, Computer Engineering for Babies. I’ve sold about 25k copies in the last 12 months, but I don’t have a publisher, a marketing team, or even an Amazon listing. I talked to a publisher once, they told me if you sell 10k books you can easily be classified as a best seller. But The NY Times, or anyone else, doesn’t care about some guy selling baby books out of his living room, and I don’t care enough about awards to try chasing them.
crobertsbmw··on App Store doesn't accept “too simple” apps
One hundred. Every year.
crobertsbmw··on From throwaway side project to Switch in 2 years: my indie gamedev story
Still reading but your first game screenshot isn’t loading for me! Edit- a lot of images don’t seem to be working for me. I’m vowing this from mobile safari.
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: Creating the best possible career/monetary outcome for a side project
I think popular adoption driving the maintainer to the point of burnout is the exception. I run deckofcardsapi.com. It’s been fairly popular and I’ve never felt like the load has been more than a few hit issues that I can happily ignore. It’s also been a great bullet point in my resume, but that’s about it. But I’m just one data point.
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Now this is something I can understand why you wouldn’t be sharing it with your parents.
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: How to Manage Group Texts?
Can you not unsubscribe from the ones you don’t care about? And, with iOS at least, you should be able to disable or group notifications to only show up once a day. Does this not solve your problem enough?
crobertsbmw··on Ask HN: When did tech stop being cool?
MSP430 g series are under a dollar depending on what package you get. The DIP package is a little more expensive than the Smaller TSSOP but they are incredibly powerful.
crobertsbmw··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
I use DuckDuckGo and it seems like it’s gotten worse on the last couple months. Whenever I search for programming questions I expect staovetflow to be on top bit lately I’ve been getting geeksforweeks blog or some BS showing at the top of the search results every time. I don’t get it. It’s not just google…
