crispyporkbites··on The Undeniable Street View
If you talk to a Ukrainian, they will tell you that the war will end when they win the war. I.E. they won’t stop fighting until the Russians are gone.

So if the regions remain under Russian control, the fighting will continue. Given Russia couldn’t conquer Ukraine first time round, it seems unlikely that they will be able to support a sustained campaign against a country that isn’t going to give up, until it’s over. Most likely outcome is that Russia attempts to hold the invaded territory for a period of years and eventually leaves when it becomes untenable for Russian leadership

crispyporkbites··on Bird Is Laying Off 23% of Its Staff
Why apply that standard to scooters and not to cars? Parked cars are strewn all across the road, taking up much more space. Some sit in the same place for weeks.

The road outside my house is about 3x car widths across, there are private cars parked on either side (2/3rds of the total road space) for the full length of the road. Only one car can fit down the road at once, and pedestrians have limited pavement.

Why get so upset about a few scooters on the pavement, when there are cars literally everywhere in the way

crispyporkbites··on Bird Is Laying Off 23% of Its Staff
Agree. Cars are a menace to society
crispyporkbites··on U.K. regulators order Meta to sell Giphy
Don't know what Giphy has, but creating and sharing a gif from a movie would be fair use and not subject to copyright.

You're not going to watch a movie in gif format, and it would be a derivative anyway.

crispyporkbites··on PeerTube 4 RC
It took me a long time to find it, but this is "the" search engine for PeerTube:

https://sepiasearch.org/

This could be a reasonable entry point for a non-technical user who just wants to watch videos. If you layer in recommendations system, trending etc. and have a default "Instance" for users to join, Peertube could start to compete with the user experience of YouTube

crispyporkbites··on Tracking Crucial Metrics of Earth's Global Warming
+6 degrees above the 30 year average in the north pole this year

I knew it was up but that is a LOT

crispyporkbites··on “The NFT Bay” Shares Multi-Terabyte Archive of ‘Pirated’ NFTs
NFTs are obviously a bit silly, BUT, it would be nice if things bought on platforms like Steam, Roblox, Amazon, iTunes etc. were transferable to other games/platforms.

The platform providers would still need to agree that a specific blockchain / NFT is actually the source of truth, and so it's not really trustless. But the internet itself isn't perfectly decentralized either. I could see a future where developers could enable web3 support in their games/apps and allow importing assets, identities etc. between platforms, which would be nice.

crispyporkbites··on A Set of TailwindCSS Based Transactional HTML Email Templates
Tailwind is popping up everywhere these days. I’m sold on it, but it seems a large number of people really don’t like it…

crispyporkbites··on NymphCast – Open-source Chromecast Alternative
Yes but it’s unusable in 99% of apps, so it doesn’t matter how technically brilliant it is
crispyporkbites··on The World’s Northernmost Town
Woah, 4 degrees Celsius temperature rise since 1970. 7 degrees warmer in winter. That's a lot, no wonder it's changing.

crispyporkbites··on What's in email tracking links and pixels?
If it's just one or a handful of emails, or a small image, attach the image and use it's Content ID to refer to it in the HTML of the email:

<img src="cid:some-image-cid" alt="img" />

pretty much all email clients support it

crispyporkbites··on Show HN: Assetroulette – Randomized Assets for Webdesign
Once I had a developer use a Meme image as an API response in development.

It was funny, but it was surprisingly hard to explain to stakeholders during demos that this was not the real API response. I think I fielded questions from at least four annoyed/confused people asking why the image was there and insisting that it must be changed before we go live.

I even got follow up emails asking for timelines on when it would be fixed.

So sometimes it's better to just use a real placeholder or something realistic.

crispyporkbites··on The rise of crypto laundries: how criminals cash out of Bitcoin
I don’t think that works at all? Your buddy would have to mine that specific block to get the reward, which is based entirely on chance. You’d also have to spend as much on the POW electricity and hardware to have a chance of getting reward anyway.
crispyporkbites··on Boring Avatars – React library to generate custom avatars
Nice- but personally I prefer Identicons e.g.

These are basically a hash in visual format.

crispyporkbites··on Biodiversity decline will require millions of years to recover
I think the unbounded optimism / arrogance is that life as is will continue indefinitely, or just get better and better.

That might happen, but climate change is one of very few things that will stop it (others being nuclear war, asteroid strikes, volcanic eruptions, solar flares and other disease)

crispyporkbites··on Biodiversity decline will require millions of years to recover
No but if we keep polluting at this rate, in 500 years civilisations will crumble. If food supply chains fail we’ll see a bunch of wars break out and a global chain reaction that will destroy massive amounts of progress.

Most likely we’ll land back at the Middle Ages- it’s happened to pretty much every civilisation to date so it’s unlikely ours will be any different.

If anything given our global scale it will be worse.

crispyporkbites··on Biodiversity decline will require millions of years to recover
In 500 years? It has to be 50 or there won’t be any societies to power in 500 years

crispyporkbites··on The Limits to Blockchain Scalability
If this scaling blog post is accurate, a global payment network at 1m transactions/second, decentralised, is massively valuable.

Imagine if the only way to send a message to someone was through fb messenger or WhatsApp, and then someone invented email. The UX might not be great, but the benefits are huge.

Additionally if the eth virtual computer can scale with very low gas costs, there’s a lot of accountancy and banking functions that can replaced with eth code. Potentially some legal functions as well.

crispyporkbites··on Being Poor (2005)
It takes much longer to cook from scratch than use processed food. If you're on the bread line it's better to spend that time working overtime.

It also takes a long time to learn to cook effectively, and you need a decent kitchen, utensils, storage, spices, scales etc. which all cost money.

There's also the mindshare element, if you need to do a thousand things to survive, adding cooking from scratch to the list is really hard.

crispyporkbites··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
But at scale you need lots of nodes/computational power and therefore lots of money. It doesn’t really make a difference whether you buy graphics cards in a pow world or ethereum in a pos world, you need lots of capital to be influential.

Now if we could make it Proof of Human, one vote, one person, non-transferable, that would be true distributed consensus. Even then you would get people buying votes with advertising as we see today in “normal” elections.

crispyporkbites··on Renewable Energy Boomed In 2020
> Whoever thinks we could replace our global energy consumption completely within a couple of decades needs to reconsider.

It will take a long time because it will take a long time! So don’t even try!

No - it is entirely up to humans to decide how long it takes.

crispyporkbites··on Email Explained from First Principles
Why is using 3rd party email providers to send email so painful?
crispyporkbites··on Climate change and the 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals
This is a bit misleading as the data is US only but the climate and weather doesn’t care about our made up borders. So to get a real picture of climate change you need to look at global weather patterns and temperature changes.
crispyporkbites··on Climate change and the 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals
You missed a key point here- this data is USA only- which is not a very big part of the world.

The poles are heating up much faster! Eg the North Pole rose 2-4c in the last 50 years:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change#/media/File%3...

The change is accelerating. Projections that held true in the 80s and 90s are being revised. We’re talking about 6-12 degrees Celsius warmer on Average globally in 100 years. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change#/media/File%3... That means some days/months will be significantly warmer and our crops, food supply, water supplies and other industries won’t have adapted quickly enough to survive.

The worst case scenarios are the breakdown of civilisation and human extinction.

crispyporkbites··on Ethereum: A Store of Value with Cash Flow [pdf]
Personally, I've moved all of my funds from other currencies into Ethereum. Not that I think it will make lots of money, but because Ethereum actually could have utility, and has a solution to the climate change impacts of Bitcoin.

So really, if I'm going to hold any cryptocurrencies, that's where I want them

crispyporkbites··on A palm oil alternative could help save rainforests
I'm glad you wrote this - flying at scale is terrible for the environment.

However it doesn't mean eating palm oil is ok. Whataboutism is even worse for the environment, there is always something you can do better and life has many facets. The danger of your comment is that people use this to justify not doing anything while continuing to fly and act irresponsibly, and pretend that they have some kind of moral high ground.

Even a small change like one individual not eating palm oil can be the first step towards a sustainable planet.

crispyporkbites··on A palm oil alternative could help save rainforests
I don’t know what the solution is or whether the article’s alternative is viable. But please do try and avoid buying products palm oil. It’s absolutely devastating and we will not get the land or the millions of species that we’re losing back.

I once flew into a tiny airport in Borneo, from above it looked like a neat lush jungle, but as we descended the horror of millions upon millions of neatly lined up palm trees stretching for hundreds of miles became clear. The tiny scrap of jungle left was condensed around the river and all the large fauna had gathered there to escape. It’s tragic and the scale is unprecedented.

I don’t know if not buying palm oil will stop them, but at least it sends a message that we need alternatives and raises awareness about one of the most visceral impacts we humans have on the earth.
