criley··on My First Fork: Facebook-ios-sdk
I'm in a similar boat: Never actually submitted a pull request.

I've recently had to modify a gem that I use to convert Youtube URL's into the finished iframe product to support many of Youtube's parameters like rel, modestbranding and showinfo.

I forked the gem and pointed my project to the repo on my own github, but I never had the balls to actually submit a pull request.

And this isn't even Facebook, just some hobby project for someone that hasn't even been updated in months and months.

Tonight, I'll submit the pull request!

Thanks for the post!

criley··on Introducing Google+ Sign-In: simple and secure, minus the social spam
That's the only username I have for the Google Apps account: username@companyname.com

Didn't realize there was anything more than possible.

criley··on Introducing Google+ Sign-In: simple and secure, minus the social spam
Too bad not every Google Apps for Business setup works with Chrome Sync (or most Google software).

My company uses Google Apps for Business, but that basically means web services, because no actual software works. GChat, Chrome, etc all fail to recognize the account.

Yep just tried again: Invalid user name and password. Exact same entry as when logging into email except Chrome fails where gmail.com works. It simply will not accept the name/password of my Google Apps account on any Google software.

What a bummer, was hoping this was a fix for having multiple accounts.

criley··on Code to Cloud in 5 minutes and 55 Seconds
I think the point is that Cloud66 allows you to deploy to 1 server and scale from a web gui, which is essentially what a "dyno" abstractly is.

I don't like the terminology used, either, and seeing as it isn't on the actual article, I'm expecting a HN mod to change it in 3...2...1...

criley··on As of today, App.net is a freemium service
The second that App.net was announced and I saw the prices, I was out. You don't pay money to develop for a service that only developers are using.

The price was extremely high in comparison to what it offered: Sure, Apple charges to develop for iOS, but iOS has a few hundred million credit-card enabled customers buying software. App.net had a bunch of already-paid developers using the service.

I tried to figure out the point through a few emails with the creator but ultimately it felt like a service for developers flush with spending money to join a sort of app vanity press.

I'm glad that it's opening up now and I'm suddenly starting to get interested in the project!

criley··on Review: Textadept
The old "No True Vim User", eh?

As in: "No TRUE vim user would think any other program was better!"

criley··on The Chromebook Pixel
These are really cool tools that I didn't realize existed! I think I may take advantage of one of them!

However as the other reply said, it seems silly to buy a big powerful incredible machine just to do all of your actual work on a virtual server. Why not just buy a cheap machine and an expensive server instead of vice versa?

I want good performance and it feels wrong to buy a beefy, sexy machine and gimp it with a 1 core 512MB development bottleneck.

AKA lesson learned: the pixel is not for cost-conscious developers.

criley··on The Chromebook Pixel
So I have to buy another machine to develop and test my stuff on? What's the point of a powerful laptop if it's just a dumb terminal to connect to my actual development machine?

Why not just buy a $300 super cheap laptop and do the exact same thing? Sure I'll have less resolution on the machine, but seeing as the developing is happening on another machine all together, it seems like the performance would be similar.

criley··on The Chromebook Pixel
How do you develop on this?

I'm used to using Linux, command line, text editors, local installs of the product I'm developing for, virtual machines, etc...

Are you simply forced into using ALL websites to actually develop and unable to use anything else?

Seems strange to pay $1250+ to develop on a machine that cannot even run or test the code you write.

criley··on Ohio State develops clean coal technology
Using these definitions that include the entirety of the process, no energy is clean energy except for Sunlight + 6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H1206 +6O2.

Even solar power will have something "dirty" along the chain somewhere.

The closest we can get is to "offset" the dirtiness.

criley··on How Samsung is out-innovating Apple
It IS innovation. 1024 levels of pressure on a 5.5" 720p screen that lasts 18 hours. That's fantastic and I've not seen that in any device.

Stop calling things "not innovation" just because it doesn't impress you. No one put out a stylus like this, in a device like this, with software like this. The old Palm's don't compare.

criley··on How Samsung is out-innovating Apple
The author of that retort redefines "sour grapes". Every quote on that blog is dripping with Apple-is-god and Android-is-horrific.

In short, it's the kind of tripe he claim's the CNN article is, and it's absolutely unsubstantiated fanboy drivel.

The way the author casually condescends the digitized stylus and larger size -- features that drove 15,000,000 sales in under a year -- reminds me of Apple itself, who likely also writes off this entire market segment.

Honestly, when you get this kind of a vulgar response to your article, you know you're hitting on a nerve.

And I agree with the original article: Apple's software has been playing catchup for multiple versions, isn't introducing novel features and is barely keeping up with the competition.

I agree because I recently ditched iOS for Android for this very reason!

criley··on Apple hit by hackers who targeted Facebook last week
You have in one single post perfectly captured why Linux is both amazing and terrible.

(Amazing, because look what you've done! Terrible, because almost every other human on this planet could not accomplish your outcome even with guides and training...)

criley··on How to affordably own your office software: LibreOffice
Missing functionality:

- An intuitive, responsive UI engineered around the most common use cases. It should hopefully eschew dropdowns and modals and instead attempt to provide what I need without any clicks or with only one click.

- No nonsense editing -- too often in LibreOffice I have to crack open the paragraph view (to see all symbols) and go line by line to figure out why a list didn't integrate properly, to re-indent a line that got wonky, to re-apply a setting that shifted. I want it to Just Work(tm) like Office is much closer to accomplishing in 2013.

- Attractive designs that I won't be embarrassed to apply. I can waste a few hours designing a custom theme (a requirement for any themeing in LibreOffice), by why waste the time? I want a simple one click design tool that applies an attractive, professional design. A quick click through LibreOffice colors and designs shows me that I would be mortified to use most of them professionally. They feel like they were done in the 1980's and haven't been updated since.

There's a few.

criley··on How to affordably own your office software: LibreOffice
LibreOffice is useful in exclusion, or when no other software programs have to be used with it. When everyone who will consume your work will consume it with the same software.

Otherwise, pony up for Word so you can be on the standard as most business, or don't and just use a free online option like Google Docs. It'll do everything you actually need, anyway.

criley··on A Most Peculiar Test Drive
False. It's possible to misread anything at any time in any condition. It is impossible to prevent all misreading, human error will always occur.

criley··on Surface Pro versus MacBook Air: Who's being dishonest with storage space?
Sorry, yeah I've been using W7 since beta and now W8. I don't know what kind of crashes happen on Linux with office software.
criley··on Surface Pro versus MacBook Air: Who's being dishonest with storage space?
In my experience, I only ever get crashes with LibreOffice. I can't honestly remember a MS Office crash for me since the 2003 version.

Are people honestly getting regular office suite crashes?

criley··on Aggressive negative advertising by Microsoft against Google.
So, make a brand new email address and abandon my @gmail account?

If I was willing to do that: I'd just leave Gmail for a superior service!

criley··on Silicon Valley job growth has reached dot-com boom levels, report says
Startup millionaires driving up housing prices to ridiculous levels, I imagine.
criley··on Aggressive negative advertising by Microsoft against Google.
No, reading personal email to deliver advertisements is creepy. It's better than it used to be but we all remember seeing things like casket advertisements when an email mentioned dead code, etc etc.

It's creepy, and I would gladly pay google monthly to prevent them from abusing my privacy.

But Google doesn't want money from me, it wants to abuse my privacy. That's far more profitable.

It's unfortunate but too many services point to my gmail for me to be able to switch.

criley··on How Oreo Won the Marketing Super Bowl With a Timely Blackout Ad on Twitter
Apologies, the normal trope on the internet is to be stupidly ignorant about American football as an excuse to insult it. "Lol handegg rules are so strange! Who would have thought Americans would like watching people stand about for hours!"
criley··on How Oreo Won the Marketing Super Bowl With a Timely Blackout Ad on Twitter
Maybe that's because boxing doesn't stop a lot and is meant to be played in a short period of time while American football is more a military game of attrition with tons of breaks between skirmishes.

Or are you just being willfully ignorant about this?

criley··on WSJ: Mojang Could Be Worth $1 Billion
Wow, you could not have misread Mojang any worse. You must be intentionally obtuse here -- I refuse to believe that you're this ignorant.

You feel like some washed up older guy pissed off that his idea didn't make it, content to sit and pooh-pooh anything else that comes by. "My idea was so great, but no, stupid little blocks is what idiots around the world want" is the vibe I get from you.

"Crappy game" "bullshit stats" "spam it"

You're jealous and content to sit there and throw your sour grapes at anyone who dares actually like Minecraft.

Honestly, you're an insult to the spirit of this site and the people who come here. To shit all over a start up that is wildly successful for no other reason than you dislike it -- Shame on you.

criley··on Your Credentials Are Worthless Here
I keep seeing this talk about "six figures" in the valley as code for "overpaid".

I don't live in San Francisco but everything I can tell about the cost of living shows me that a $100,000 salary in SF is roughly equivalent to what, $45,000 here in Atlanta, GA. (http://www.bestplaces.net/col/?salary=100000&city1=50667...)

Which is certainly a good salary for a college grad but it's NO WHERE NEAR "overpaid", in my opinion...

Chances are Apple's policy is intentional and while tech communities of 20-25 y/o white single upper-middle class males tend to call for open access and no censorship, not all demographics of Apple users necessarily agree...
